We decided to spend the day using the hop on/off bus with the intention to get a bit of info about the city, get out to Santa Monica and to farmers market...and it was an added bonus that a stop was right outside our hotel. We made our first stop at the Farmers market, and when we were ready to leave we waited 30mins for the next bus (we joined a couple who had been waiting an hour- they say buses run every 20-30mins & allow for traffic). We got on and sat up top in the open air with other travellers and continued on the red route to Hollywood Boulevard. It made quick stops along the way, including at the chinese theatre, where everyone else on the bus got off except for us, as we were planning on getting off a few more stops away. As the bus headed off from the chinese theatre stop, I realised after a few blocks it was going in the wrong direction according to the map. At the next red light we went downstairs to ask the driver, who got a shock that we were there and began yelling at us that she was finished, her shift was over and she was heading home. She continued to yell at us that at the last stop she asked the last passenger if that was everybody off the bus (instead of coming up to check for herself as she admitted she should have done, also there were no announcements saying we had to get off). Then she told us she could not drop us back at the last stop (chinese theatre) because there was too much traffic, and how she would be asked by her bosses why she had driven back that way as the bus has GPS tracking every move she makes. She ended up dropping us at a stop and told us we'd have to wait about 10 mins for the next bus because she was finished. We waited over 10 mins and decided we'd walk ourselves to Chinese theatre and catch the next bus back to the stop near our hotel. We did some shopping and got on the bus (by now it was too late to get to Santa Monica and back with City Sightseeing). As soon as the bus stopped we quickly made our way down the steps from the top level (frequently the recording tells you not to stand up until the bus comes to a complete stop). However when I was half way down the stairs I had to tell the bus driver to stop, as he had started pulling away - they do not allow time for passengers to get off (which was something we noticed for other passengers getting off along the way). We ended up using the local bus to get where we wanted the rest of the day. I reccommend the local bus system- it is cheap, runs frequently, drivers are friendly and is easy to use. I have used City Sightseeing buses in other cities in USA which were fantastic, but this was massively disappointing. Do not waste your money.
