I stayed here for a week based upon tripadvisor reviews and was very pleased. Heather was very responsive via email. Don, the on-site manager, was equally helpful. The apartments are very clean and well-furnished. My main reason for chosing an apartment over a budget hotel was the opportunity to cook meals. Don directed me to nearby supermarkets and the kitchen was perfect for my needs. I stayed in the Laurel & Hardy suite. There is just a bit of street noise from Hoover St. across a parking lot. If you are very sensitive to that, ask for an apartment on the west side of the building, overlooking the Manor's secure parking area. The bed is a comfortable memory foam affair. One could have hoped for sheets that were more cottony and less polyestery, but that's a very small matter. It's a great place to stay.
My only caveats have to do with the nature of Los Angeles itself. The only good location is the one closest to wherever you need to be, because the traffic is worse than whatever you've heard. There is no rush hour in perceivable directions -- it's just bad all day, all the time. You're not going to get as many things done as you may have thought in advance, due to travel times. I tried the Metro (Wilshire/Vermont stop is within walking distance) and the signage was so awful I gave up. So look at this location carefully and if it's good for you you'll have a fine experience at Essex Manor.
