Had an amazing time wondering the boardwalk of Venice Beach, but when it came time to drown out all the noise and try to enjoy the view, I found myself at the High Rooftop Lounge at the Hotel Erwin.
Views were spectacular and ambience social and friendly. While I wasn't drinking anything stronger than diet soda, those that were enjoying adult beverages around me seemed pleased with the bartender's "pour."
They did have a limited menu of small plates available -- tried the ahi tuna tacos and wasn't disappointed.
Due to the nature of the space available on the rooftop (and probably due to the fact that the day I visited, a private party was being set up), the hostess did a good job at setting expectations. "O.k., I can seat you over here 'till 6:30, but when 6:30 comes you'll have to leave because this area is booked." While some visitors might find this off-putting, I found her candor to be refreshing. My guess is that the space at High Rooftop Lounge is in high-demand, so I feel from an organizational perspective the management handled those of us without reservations with tack and respect.
Lesson learned: Next time I go back, I'll call ahead.
Good time, great view and fun, spontaneous conversations with other patrons.
