“Burgers to die for!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 1, 2010

I went to the one on Hollywood Blvd. and it was better GREAT! My husband and I shared the umami burger($9), leg of lamb burger($12), and the tempura onion rings($3 and it comes with one sauce). There burgers are pretty small but after a burger, onion rings, and a beer, I was good! Both burgers were great but the leg of lamb burger was AMAZING!! Next time I go I will definitely get that again and try another...maybe the truffle burger. The onion rings were a bit different but super good and juicy! There is a small parking lot in the back but if it is full then you have to look for street parking. Every bite was amazing...if you have not been before, you need to go and try it!

My favorite burger for flavor ... 25 Degrees and The Counter make bigger burgers and Father's office is a contender. Also, Umami has mediocre fries, I recommend the onion rings instead.

“Umami Burger -- good but has some issues”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 22, 2009

This was our second time at Umami Burger on La Brea and we'd recommend it, but with some reservations. The concept is great -- focusing on Umami, the fifth taste after salty, sweet, bitter and sour. The first time we went -- we loved it. Well, we went again tonight and it didn't hold up as well on a second visit. The burgers are tasty but you really get no choice in how much they're cooked -- they don't offer or ask if you have a preference. You get what you get and the meat was quite rare. Also, ketchup doesn't necessarily come with your meal -- unless you're willing to pay for it. You are entitled to one condiment with each side you order (i.e. french fries, onion rings) -- they have some interesting spreads like garlic aioli and dijon mustard. But anything after the measly tablespoon you're alotted and they charge you a couple of bucks for each one. At the end of the meal we both left feeling not so great. It's not that it didn't taste good or that the food was bad -- it's actually that the food probably has too much umami (that layering of savory tastes) -- the umami overkill hits you later. So I'd say try it for something different, then you decide if it's worth a second trip.

These people know their hamburgers. This is what real hamburgers should taste like.
