“A venerable venue”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 8, 2013

This old pile has more character than all the other hotels in Los Angeles put together. The staff are friendly and dignified, the room was quite comfortable, and the included breakfast is far better than the usual sort of 'free' breakfasts.

There is some noise from the plumbing and adjacent rooms, but it was manageable. There is also noise from traffic and sirens, but this was no more than a typical city hotel.

If you are looking for lodging with character and charm, then this is the place to stay in downtown Los Angeles.

I stayed here two weeks ago with a friend. We were visiting from Chicago and going to a fashion show in the fashion district that night so we wanted to stay somewhere close. Downtown LA is not the greatest right now but the hotel was a gem. We were greeted immediately upon entering the doors and the interior was beautiful with fresh flowers in the foyer. We received two breakfast vouchers for free breakfast the next morning which was very welcome for two twenty-somethings on a budget. The floors that had hotel rooms on them were beautifully decorated and very, very quiet. The rooms were smaller but also nicely decorated. The wall color was DARK, which is fine by me because I like sleeping in dark rooms. The big king was very comfortable and roomy. The bathroom was small and not as clean as I thought it would be but still nice. We only stayed one night so we were in the room for a total of 7 hours probably but it was a great hotel, very classy and the service was friendly.

I stayed here for my birthday last week and had the most wonderful night. The staff was very accommodating but not in a smarmy way. You get the feeling that they really wanted to help you. The room was beyond comfortable!! I could have easily stayed more nights! The breakfast buffet was so enjoyable that my only regret is that I could not eat more. I took a stroll through the hotel and it was like walking into a sports museum. I took pictures of some great sporting images and artifacts. I did not have the time to check out the gym or the pool or any of the other fun stuff but I will be back for that!!!

We stayed here while in LA for a downtown wedding. Downtown LA is still a work in progress, but there are some good things starting to happen down there. Our room was nice and well-appointed, the bed/linens were awesome! The breakfast is a great amenity and we liked the Art Deco/vintage décor of the entire hotel. The ability to use all the sports/workout facilities of the club make it an amazing deal. Our only complaint was that the restaurant/room service is not available on weekends. Luckily, there are a lot of take out places within walking distance.

Here's the best part: On the morning we checked out, a cycling event was going on downtown and the street was blocked off. The taxis couldn't get to the hotel and we were about to walk several blocks with our luggage to get a cab to the airport. Terri, the sales manager, was in the lobby and offered to drive us to LAX in her car. She got us there in plenty of time, and was so much fun to talk to. We got a great history of the hotel and really enjoyed meeting her. Thank you Terri! Now THAT is service!

Had a nice stay here. The staff were helpful, courteous and really could not do enough for you. Restaurant was very good and the dinners I had via room service were tasty, hot and delivered in really good time. Bed was comfortable, bathroom great and I really cannot complain about the service and services of the hotel.

I had one problem, but it was fixed within ten minutes of being reported. All in all, a good place to stay except for one thing - the noise of the traffic.

I was on the 12th floor and the traffic noise was very audible. Even in the early hours it is very audible. I check with other people who were staying here at the same time and they too said the traffic noise was loud. Normally traffic does not bother me, but having flown in from the other coast, my time zones were three hours ahead of LA and the noise woke me up at 3.00 am, and I never got back to sleep. Not sure there is much the hotel can do about this, but when checking in, ask for the quietist room possible. You may not get one, but at least you know you asked!

Room Tip: Ask for the quietist room they have available.

We stayed at the LA Athletic Club for 3 nights as part of our honeymoon in September. The hotel is amazing. It is so different from other hotels we have stayed in. It feels like an old boys club. Everything is decorated in dark browns and greys with leather furniture, and plush furnishings. It is an athletic club, so the first 9 floors are taken up by the gym, pool, basketball court, track and many other sporty related things. Then the rooms are on floors 10-12.
We got to the hotel at about 10am and the really helpful lady on reception was able to check us in straight away, even though check in isn’t until 4pm. She gave a free upgrade to a corner suite on floor 10, which was a great surprise. She also gave us vouchers for a free hot breakfast every morning and a floor guide.

The lobby of the hotel felt really nice. The reception desk is quite small, but we never had to wait to speak to anybody. There is a polished marble floor and brown leather sofas to lounge about on. There are 4 lifts in the hotel, and we didn’t have to wait more than about 10 seconds for one. In fact, most of the time there was a lift waiting on the ground floor for us.

The room itself was amazing. We were in room 1027 which is the Beach Club Suite. It is on the corner of the hotel, so it has loads of windows, with views over different parts of the city. It was decorated in light grey with vases of shells, and pictures of beach things on the walls. We had a separate lounge area, which had a table and chairs, a sofa and two comfy chairs, and a HD TV in a cabinet. There was also a little room next to the front room which had a tea and coffee maker and a sink with a tap for washing up. There was a wardrobe on the left of the room as we walked in which had a safe in it.

The bedroom was also really nice. It had a desk and chair for working, a comfy chair in the corner of the room, loads of windows again, and a massive comfy bed. The linens were so nice and soft and comfortable. There was another HD TV and another wardrobe. There was also a sink and vanity area just outside the bathroom. The bathroom itself was quite small, with just a shower and toilet, but there were loads of fluffy towels and the shower was nice and hot with good pressure.

We used the free hot breakfast vouchers every day. It is served in the ‘Famous Players’ lounge on the 3rd floor from 7am-10am. There was a lot of choice considering it was complimentary. You could have tea, coffee and juice, with as many refills as you wanted. There was also oatmeal, pastries, cereal, fresh fruit, yoghurt and a selection of hot food so scrambled eggs, sausages, bacon, French toast, and breakfast potatoes. There were loads to choose from! We tried a little bit of everything and it was all freshly cooked and freshly made. We were really impressed.

The rest of the hotel is decorated in the same lovely style as the lobby. A lot of plush carpets, leather sofas and dark colours. The hotel even has a library! There is also a business centre next to the bar with 2 computers and a printer which was handy for printing out boarding passes. We explored as much of the hotel as we could – it is like a maze! There are sporty things on every floor, plus two shops (one for men and one for women) selling LA Athletic club tops and sweaters. The pool is huge with a Jacuzzi at one end. The gym is massive. We didn’t use it, but we had a good look round. There was also a running track which went round the edge of the pool. The sporty stuff is split up over 9 of the floors, so there is a lot of exploring to be done.

The car parking was also very good. The hotel has a multi storey car park it uses, which is just round the corner on Olive Street. It is self-parking and charged by the hotel at $12 a day, with in and out privileges. It is basically a big multi storey car park, with a lift that will then take you straight down to the hotel lobby. You get a ticket on the way in, and on the way out just give the ticket to the attendant for them to validate. Then you can just come and go as you please.

The hotel is in a good location – we never felt like it was a dodgy area as some other reviewers have mentioned. We felt quite safe walking around, even when it was dark. We didn’t venture south of the hotel though so I can’t comment on that area! The LAAC is about a 10 minute walk from Macys Plaza, which has a Macys and a few other shops. It was about a 15 minute walk from the Staples Centre too. It took us quite a while to drive to places like Hollywood Boulevard but that was more to do with the traffic than the location. Downtown really feels like it is an ‘up and coming’ area. You can tell they are trying to make an effort with it, as there are a lot of nice posh restaurants around. There is a Walgreens and a Rite Aid within a five minute walk. We also had an amazing burger from a place called the Counter which is opposite Macys Plaza.

This will definitely be the hotel we choose to stay at the next time we are in LA. It just feels so different from any other hotel we have ever stayed in. The staff were great and friendly, the room was lovely and the location was good. We will definitely be back!

Hotel facilities are well-equipped, yet a bit outdated. Still value for money. I got a room includes free wifi and breakfast, not classy just good for a short stay. The location is convenient to Metro station, red line - two blocks away from hotel, walking distance to Old Macy plaza and Sheraton, everything on 7th street is old and need to furnish. You may take the Metro to Vermont station then transit the Big blus bus to Santa Monica to enjoy the Calfornia sunshine and beautiful modern environment there. Well about this hotel - decent hotel and value for money. Dinning in little Tokyo will provide you a little surprise cos the food there is good quality and super deal.
