“Almost to the manor born”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 14, 2013

The Los Angeles Athletic Club offers an elegant alternative to the conventional hotel experience for travelers who plan to nest downtown. The neighborhood is no place you'd want to go strolling after dark, but since I was attending a conference at the nearby Union Station, the location was ideal. Staying at the club is an extraordinary opportunity. As a guest, you enjoy access to all of the club's facilities -- pool, spa, running track, gymnasium, squash courts, you name it. And not just the athletic facilities. There is a beautiful bar, grill room, library, and fancy restaurant, all ideally suited for a business meeting in the sumptuous and heretofore exclusive setting that one would expect of a club designed for the elite of Los Angeles' business and legal communities. The hotel rooms are very handsomely decorated and well appointed although the style is definitely masculine running to slate grays with burgundy highlights. And for a room rate that is quite reasonable for downtown Los Angeles, the unexpected extras make this a great bargain -- a plate of fresh fruit and cheese waiting in the room, discount parking, a free, full breakfast in the morning. This is probably not the place to bring the kids, but for couples and business travelers, this would be my first choice in the downtown area.

Room Tip: Be sure to check the phone in your room to make certain the ring tone is turned on. Guests who want...

“Not your typical hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 13, 2013

When I arrived at the hotel, I was wary of the neighborhood. It was an urban, downtown location that I don't associate with Los Angeles -- more like Philadelphia. But once inside, I entered a historic, old hotel. The lobby was not impressive but it did have free copies of the Wall Street Journal and LA Times -- much preferred over USA Today.

The best part was the spacious, nicely appointed room and the free, full breakfast. The hotel is located one mile from the convention and Staples center, and not too far from the Opera House and museums. Good restaurants were close by.

The hotel service was quirky. One morning, I found that the maid never replaced coffee in the room. When I went to get some at the front desk, I was handed a single packet for one cup. The weekends have a skeletal staff so things do not get cleaned up very quick. And although there is a big gym with a basketball court, running track, exercise equipment and more, the opening hours were limited.

Overall, I was satisfied with the four-night visit.

Room Tip: The rooms have thick walls that muffle sounds from neighboring rooms. Outside noise is loud but room...

“The hotel is absoultely beautiful, but not a great neighbourhood”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 2, 2013

The Athletic Club was amazing.
The rooms were beautiful, elegant and great value for money.
I just didn't like the downtown area.
It is almost as though the city has given up on it.
During the day it's ok, it's busy with people etc. But at about 10pm or so at night, the nasty element comes out of the city and onto the streets in downtown.
Don't get me wrong, if you just stayed in the room, or caught taxis around so you didn't have to walk the streets, you won't have a problem.
The facilities at the Athletics Club are also amazing, it truly is an elegant and La Noire type of hotel.
The staff were extremely helpful, courteous and friendly too.

Room Tip: We stayed in an upgraded suite and it was truly worth it! Great space to relax and enjoy!

“Hidden jewel, big surprize”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 21, 2013 via mobile

?t was a surprize. There is an ongoing renevation at the hotel lobby. Disappointed at first. Then it turned out a fancy hotel with nicely decorated rooms. Worst thing about the hotel, it is not easy to find with navigation. Dont trust your gps. Get ready your map.

“Historic hotel – great facilities, great place to stay in Downtown LA”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 18, 2013

My son and I spent 10 nights in mid January 2013 whilst staying in downtown LA to watch Lakers games at Staples Centre.

Our room was spacious and well-designed. The bathroom was rather small and plain, but sufficient. Access to a world-class gym, swimming pool, and indoor basketball court was a huge plus. However, numerous restaurants and clubs surround the LAAC.. Make sure to visit the ballroom, bars etc, it is so beautiful, like an old English Mansion.

This hotel is a gem right in downtown Los Angeles. The facilities are well kept. My son said it felt like being in your own private club – has that 1930’s feel / glamour. The L.A. Athletic Club was founded in 1880 and it plays its history throughout the hotel with many old photos, posters and memorabilia.

The bed (room 1210) was very comfy. The room is equipped with a small fridge, coffeemaker, free WiFi (bonus!). Another bonus is the breakfast is included in the rate and is very good. Continental b/fast or a cooked - eggs, bacon, waffles, plus an omelette station.

We loved the hotel, some people say the area isn't particular great, especially at night, but we didn’t feel bit uncomfortable, but note there are many homeless people around... but during the day, it's fine. Oh, as someone else said - do not miss going to Bottega Louie, just a block over on 7th Street. The bakery is amazing !

Great location approx 6 blocks (20 min walk) from Staples Centre. I would really recommend anyone staying in downtown LA not to miss this delightful experience. What a great hotel with all the history of Los Angeles behind it. This hotel is a MUST.

Room Tip: Room 1210 great - quiet
