I've stayed at the Cadillac a few times over the years and used to love it, but not this last trip. It does have a kind of rundown backpacker charm, but virtually all the negative comments here are true. We paid more than $180 a night (when including taxes) for a priceless view of the water... but an incredibly noisy room with a broken safe, broken coffee maker, running toilet, no AC and a staff that forgot to provide towels on two of the three days. The music from downstairs in the day is enough to drive you insane. The homeless folks out front are nice enough, but they like to chat until the wee hours, and you will hear them while you roll around in bed, desperately hoping for some sleep. The otherwise very friendly management will try to make you stay three days minimum and charge your card completely up front. I'm sure they've implemented this very unusual and somewhat unethical practice because so many people have changed their minds after staying one night. Don't do it -- and especially not on a weekend -- or you'll regret it. LA is one city where you must rent a car to get around, and it's strongly advisable to stay at different hotels in different areas each night. E.g. if you want a night out on the Sunset strip while staying the three nights at the Cadillac, plan on long drives and/or $80 in cab fares or 2 hr bus rides each way. There are lots of nice, cheaper places in Venice/Santa Monica. You won't have the view, but you'll be able to sleep.
