“Very Indifferent”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 2, 2011

I booked this hostel for a cheap stay in LA back in July. I saw the reviews for the nearby Banana Bungalow and decided I didnt want to stay there, this however looked smarter and better recieved....

Imagine my alarm when I got an email three days before my stay saying that "The Orbit had Moved around the corner" THE ORBIT AND BANANA BUNGALOW ARE THE SAME PLACE. Alarm bells sounded louded when noone at the airport had ever heard of the orbit... to me it sounds like a deliberate diversion from the poor reviews the other property had..
Anyway that issue out of the way....

I contacted "Orbit" two days before my stay about the advertised Ariport Pick up - Absolutley no reply. So you have to take a Supershuttle or Prime Time from LAX - its about $16 per head.

The private room I booked was ok - clean enough. the Patio door did not lock so it would be possible to walk straight into the room from next door via the adjoining balcony.

The room had shower/bath a good size TV and was actually a family room with a Bunk Bed Adjacent to the Double some of the staff were very informative, some indifferent.

The breakfast was a loaf of bread and a choice of three cereals with an urn of Coffee... The kitchin did appear a though you could use it for your own meals.

Unlike the other reviews, I had absolutely no cockroach experiences, and the bed was comfy enough.

The Location is ok, close to the regular 217 Metro Bus which is direct to the hollywood walk of fame or south the get to the beverley hills area.

Room Tip: Choose a private room, with patio doors failing to lock be prepared to not leave many valuables.

“Dirty and roach-filled”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed September 29, 2011

This place should not call itself a Hotel and Hostel - we got a private room and there was nothing hotel-like about it. Dirty rooms, stained sheets and carpets, weird smell throughout and cockroaches in the bedroom. We didn't eat the free breakfast as we didn't trust it so I can't say what that was like. All-in-all, great location on Melrose and extremely cheap, but frankly not worth the anxiety that I might wake up with one of the cockroaches crawling all over me.

“Good Value”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 10, 2011

The girl who checked us in told us their credit card machine was not working, but there was no credit card machine to be seen in the office at all. Upon reading other reviews I don’t think they even accept credit cards – something that would be handy to know, as a person who only uses credit and carries very little cash.

Location – Great Location. Very close to Melrose shopping and a short walk to The Grove.

They have a free shuttle that picks up at LAX at set times, only problem is the van does not have much luggage space at all so if there are a few people it can be quite cramped. Other shuttles are very reasonably priced.

Room – Our room was clean, and reasonably maintained. We booked a private room, our room was large with a balcony and as well as our double bed also had a set of bunks in the room as well. Or door to the balcony did not lock, there was a piece of wood to place in the track of the door to stop it from being opened, and the screen kept falling off.

Breakfast – Very cheap and reasonably quality breakfast is sold in the kitchen every morning Some food is free others are 2$. Avoid the hash browns, they are very soggy, I believe they are just heated up in the microwave.

Luggage room is not very secure, it locks, but they don’t check if the bags you are taking are actually yours, you just put the bags in a room with a lot of other people’s bags and hope no one takes your bag when they take theirs.

The lift does not work, so you will have to carry your luggage upstairs.

We would definitely stay here again.

“Basic Value for Money”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 23, 2011

We shared a 6 bed dorm and it was OK, the bunk beds were a bit rickety but it was clean and the bathroom was OK, had a bath and shower which was ensuite to the dorm room so only used between 6 of us.

The free breakfast downstairs was good, large portion of cereal and/or toast! For $2, you could get eggs, bacon and a waffle, amazing! The staff are really helpful and friendly and the tour around Hollywood is well worth the money. The tour guide is hilarious! The rooms aren't as noisy as I thought they would be. There's free wifi and computers to use so very convenient. Is a short walk to some shops and restaurants and close to the bus routes for everywhere else. A bit of a trek to the beach though as in the city.

“excellent for backpackers”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 6, 2011

we stayed here for four nights in a 4 bed mixed dorm, the room was small but that wasnt a problem, there werent big lockers so we were worried about leaving our bags out but it was fine, small lockers were provided for valuables, laptops etc, available wifi, very quick, also provided apple computers for people to use for free. Free breakfast was very good, coffee, toast, cereal etc. Staff were extremely lovely and helpful. Very happy with hostel and would stay there again, they also do free activities such as bbqs, and if your a single traveller the provide all sorts of tours too.
