“Don't go there : we want to keep it to ourselves !”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 18, 2013

Boy, do we love that place.
Each year as we leave, we feel it is going to be a long year before we return. Home does not feel better.
We only spent 4 nights this summer. We cancelled most our activities, so that we could stay and enjoy. We only went out for dinner. We took in the place, again, enjoyed every minute.

We were kindly comped at check-in from a Grand Deluxe room to a Bel-Air Suite. Unfortunately, the suite did not have outdoor space, and we asked to revert to our Grand Deluxe room, not basic by any mean. But thanks anyway, we appreciated the gesture.

The minor glitches that we noted last year have been worked out. The tables at the pool that were using too much space have replaced by loungers. We were always seated, which had not been the case. The service is still inparalleled, mixing new staff and old Bel-Air staff (we were happy to see, year after year, Carlos and Lucinda).

As our profile will show, we have slept around !
I wrote last year that HBA was our favorite hotel in the world. No change here. We are getting married next saturday, only to feel sorry that LA is too far away for a short honeymoon, because this is where we would like to go, of any place.

Thanks guys.

Dear frenchandparisian,

Thank you for taking the time to review your stay at Hotel Bel-Air. The title of your review put a huge smile on my face. It is wonderful to hear how much you enjoy to visit Hotel Bel-Air…we always love welcoming you back. And know that we will add a note in your guest profile indicating your preference for outdoor space.

I am glad you decided to cancel your activities and just relax and enjoy your time at the hotel…Hotel Bel-Air seems to have that effect on a lot of our guests! Certain New Yorkers tend to look down on LA. Well if they stayed at the Bel Air I think they would be less vocal. This is a garden paradise , the rooms are ultra lux and modern, the hotel bar is one of the best I've been too (ask for a Manhattan). It is sophisticated and sure of itself. If you are a big-shot here's your place, if your a less than big-shot they still make you feel like one. It's a romantic place- honeymoon or rekindling a flame. Eat at the hotel. You really don't need to leave except to see the Getty which is very close and maybe Beverly Hills and Rodeo Drive. I was impressed. Also they were sweet to my little dog. I was surprised the London mother ship doesn't allow dogs!

Room Tip: Get a patio room and sleep with the doors open.

Dear NYCSBH,

Ah yes, it's the good ol’ New York vs. Los Angeles feud. The never-ending battle of the two coats! As a former New Yorker, I have to say I do love both cities. But I have to say, you just can’t beat the weather in Los Angeles.

I am so happy to know that you enjoyed your stay at Hotel Bel-Air and had the chance to have a cocktail in our famous Bar. The location of the hotel is truly unique, as we are situated right in the middle of Los Angeles but we are located on 12 acres of lush gardens. It really sets the stage of the ultimate urban retreat. I am glad you appreciate our very special location and the ease with which you were able to visit the city's major attractions.

We hope to welcome you, and your little dog too of course, back to the hotel in the near future.

Warm Regards,
Denise Flanders

The room we stayed in was great but unfortunately, even for this tech savy girl, the operation from the lights was very confusing. It would take about 5 minutes of trying every combination (wall switches and turning them on through the phone system) each time we came back to the room. Also, the room was extremely warm. We had the air conditioner on full blast but to no avail. The hotel itself was gorgeous and the decorations were very tasteful. The gym was really nice as well. I also utilised the spa which was very nice as well. We used the courtesy car a couple of times and it was very helpful!

Dear Karen P,

Thank you for providing feedback on your recent visit to Hotel Bel-Air. I do apologize for the fact that you had some difficulties with the technology. On your next visit, I kindly ask that you let the front desk agent know you would appreciate a little more familiarization with the technology and we will be sure to make this happen. Our staff is well trained on all aspects of our guestroom technology and they are here to make it a benefit (vs a burden) for you.

I am pleased you were impressed with the rest of your stay and happy you took advantage of the house car…we always encourage our guests to request this convenient (and luxurious!) service amenity. Please come back and visit us again.

We had initially planned to spend 3 nights at The Beverly Hills Hotel. Right after check-in (we were booked in a premier king room with patio which felt worn out, old and stuffy) we decided to leave asap, decision confirmed after a dinner at the Polo Lounge which was very average (more details in my review of the BHH).

We rushed on the Internet and we chose Hotel Bel-Air. They could not accommodate us right away but we agreed to check-in the following day in a premier canyon suite.

Location is not far from the BHH but it feels more remote in a very upscale area in the heart of Bel Air. Check-in was warm and quick, it did not felt like a hotel but more like a resort, with perfect warm efficient and attentive service. There are only 103 rooms & suites so the level of personal attention is higher that what you can expect in most other places in Beverly Hills.

The premier canyon suite is a gem. From the outside the hotel kept its charm and historic feeling. And inside the suite you can find all the modern amenities. The terrace with the fireplace and the jacuzzi is the perfect place to enjoy your breakfast or just chill out. From what we saw lay-out of the different canyon suites can vary a lot, as does the level of privacy of your terrace. Ours (268) was not the biggest but the jacuzzi was completely invisible from the pathways.

Suite itself is not very big but space is wisely used: guest powder room, sitting room with retractable wall windows granting plenty of light, bedroom, large storage area and nice bathroom with natural light. There were two Bang & Olufsen TV plus one in front of the bathtub, and Toto modern loo. Use of the iPad is great to schedule housekeeping & turn down service, request laundry pick-up, order breakfast, consult the Spa menu, etc.

We had all our diners at Wolfgang Puck. Food is excellent and thanks to the specials of the day the choice & selection is very good. Service at the restaurant is excellent. Actually level of service is beyond perfection, all the staff members we met seemed genuinely committed to make us feel at home and enjoy ourselves.

Several other reviews insist on the resort feeling away from the agitation of the city. It is very true, you don't want to leave as it feels so relaxed. But when you do leave you can access very easily Rodeo Drive, Hollywood boulevard or Santa Monica.

We fell in love with Hotel Bel Air and at check-out we suddenly decided to extend our stay by one additional day. It was a great opportunity to have more time to enjoy the pool and the spa:
1) pool => it is quite large and we never saw more than 3 couples at the same time. There is plenty of shade and plenty of sun. It is opened from 8am to 8pm. Only point to improve is that when we arrived at 8am there was no intendant before 9 or 9:30. It would be nice to have someone earlier, or considering the very few people who arrive early, at least to have a kind of 'on-duty button' to call an intendant when needed.
2) spa => it is beautiful and very quiet. Therapists are nice and very well skilled.

In the Spa building there is a little gym with various modern equipment and again a lot of natural light (too many hotels have a basement / dark gym). Fruits, water, cold towels, everything you need is there.

Overall Hotel Bel Air is one of the very best hotels we had the chance to visit. It is the perfect combination of charm and authenticity with up-to-date equipment to fulfill the needs of today travelers. Hopefully The Beverly Hills Hotel (also owned by the Dorchester group) will follow the same path.

Dear Cedric&Pierre,

Thank you for sharing you recent experience at Hotel Bel-Air. I am delighted you enjoyed your stay in the Premier Canyon Suite and glad you took advantage of our in-room iPads. It is wonderful to hear you enjoyed your experience at Wolfgang Puck at Hotel Bel-Air and were especially impressed with the service… I will make sure to share your great feedback with the staff. It's also great to hear that you experienced the Spa by La Prairie, and your insightful comment about a pool attendant will be noted. And how lovely that you decided to extend your stay by one additional day!

I am thrilled you feel Hotel Bel-Air is one of the best hotels you have every visited. This puts a huge smile on my face and it is what we want to create for all of our guests. As for The Beverly Hills Hotel, all guestrooms and suites will be undergoing a refresh program soon, and while we certainly want you to return to stay with us, perhaps you will have the opportunity to see the new product there when next return. We hope to see you again in the near future.

Warm Regards,
Denise Flanders

When we checked in our room was not ready and we were upgraded to a suite! Given the demands of going anywhere in LA traffic, the Hotel Bel Air feels like you have arrived at an oasis. The grounds are unlike most of the luxury LA hotels in that they are not a big block tower but lush grounds, low slung buildings, nestled in a neighborhood, with swans! I was concerned that our 11 year old twin boys would not be very welcome and that it would be a stuffy and condescending atmosphere. Could not have been further from the truth! The Wolfgang Puck restaurant was very good as well, money well spent in my book. Definitely will be back.

Dear StanleyToews,

Thank you for reviewing your recent stay at Hotel Bel-Air. I am thrilled you enjoyed our canyon oasis and felt our gardens provide an "escapist" setting in the heart of Los Angeles... we couldn't agree more. And to know that we made your 11 year old sons feel right at home means the world to us. We enjoying having lots of VIK's (very important kids) at the hotel and welcome families with open arms.

We look forward to your return - hopefully it will be soon,

This hotel is beautiful and the service and staff spectacular. Food which is all Wolfgang Puck was great. Bel Air is beautiful and the grounds of the hotel special. Very nice pool with great attendants but not many people around the pool. Rooms are a little small, too high tech and could use an extra mirror in the room. Spa was wonderful. This is a hotel you have to stay at least once because of the history, beauty and service.

There is very little to add about this place as it is layer upon layer of understated luxury and privacy. As expected. And with expectations rarely met on these grounds for similar standard properties.

Lots of little special details that even the most well seasoned traveller will appreciate.
Traveling with young children. Never made to feel awkward about it as you would many times over in LA. Great babysitting/nanny service if required.

Room Tip: For families, Interconnecting rooms with connecting patios give great flexibility and space. Better...
