“Good Sushi!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 15, 2012

We had a business dinner in one of the small private dining rooms (9 people). I'm not a sushi fan, but others in the party are and assured me that the sushi was top notch. The fried rice was good and I did try the California roll. The edamame was exceptional.

I would have given 5 stars except for two reasons: the service was a little slow--we were there on a Tuesday evening. The other star killer was that the ladies restroom was filthy. The dust clinging to the toilet enclosure suggested that cleaning the facilities is not high on the staff priority list.

“It's OK”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 10, 2012

Yamato is a perfect spot in Westwood next to UCLA so you can be sure it's packed with students.
The place is interesting for its decorum. Service is OK so you will have a good time.
Tables are clean and the sushi bar area is also reasonably clean...I have seen better though but I guess that s because they have a lot of customers. I still think that if you want to have really good sushis , a smaller venue is more appropriate.

Not the best but still a good place for the price especially if you are a large group. Their rolls are interesting and tasty. My advise is to reserve though and get a table upstairs, a little bit less noisy..high ceilings (eh it looks like a church after all) promote an ambient loud background. noise.

“とても良い (Totemo yoi)”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 3, 2012

Take a quick trip to Japan as you cross the bridge over the small pond filled with Koi and turtles. For 25 cents you can pause and feed the fish, but I'm usually hungry for sushi and wait until on the way out. Inside the traditional Japanese structure are three main areas - a bar with big screen TV that serve traditional Japanese boxed meals. Next is a sushi pit with tall-hatted chefs cutting up fresh fish on tiny plates and putting them on a conveyor belt that bring a wide variety right to your waiting chopsticks. Finally, in the main room (and a couple of small semi-private rooms), are the large grills where your personal chef puts on a culinary show cooking your selection while building onion volcanoes, flipping egg shells, and creating pagan rhythms with aluminum salt and pepper shakers. Come for the atmosphere and the show, but enjoy the healthy fillets, fish, shrimp, scallops, fried rice, lobsters, bean sprouts, onions, and zucchini grilled to perfection and placed hot on your plate. Lunch prices are reasonable and available seven days a week. Gochisou sama deshita.

(This review is for the Valencia restaurant, so it may seem a little different from the other L.A. version of this chain restaurant.)

“Beautiful restaurant; great sushi”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 6, 2012

Loved the space and architecture of the restaurant. The service was excellent and the sushi selection was extensive. Our table ordered seven rolls. Many included minced spicy tuna. Next time will try to find rolls with greater fish variety.
