Great storytelling is what sets this tour apart. In a way, Paramount needs to compensate with this given that this studio only shoots a few movies on site and rent space for select TV productions (so very little to see in terms of fixed television sets) Details below
What I liked: Small groups (6-8 people) and a very personal and friendly guide that took the time to get to know us. A good balance between walking around and driving in the "golf cart". Paramount has a lot to offer from an historical perspective and our guide was an effective storyteller and was able to create some of these "wow" or "really?" moments. Some good technical information about how some scenes are produced (for example: how water scenes are created using one of the "parking lot" or how a specific location/park has been repurposed for different shows/movies). We did get to visit one actual set (Dr. Phil) and given that this was over the holidays very little in terms of actual production which is a mixed blessing. The one good thing about this is that the guides have a bit more "freedom" to show you things as they don't have to interfere with what is going on. At 2 hours, this is just the right amount of time for the studio tour
What to watch for/could be improved: You may or may not see celebs and given that Paramount does not produce TV shows themselves (but does house a few regular productions), current stuff is a bit more limited. Also, it almost feels as if the availability of tours is an after thought. Compared to WB, the tours are a fairly small operation, with limited merchandising and a waiting / check-in area that is fairly small
I had the opportunity to do both the Paramount and WB tours on that day. They are both quite different. Paramount is much more personal and friendly whereas WB may tend to please the sitcom enthusiast who will get to see a few actual sets. Overall, I had a slight preference for the Paramount tour. Also, some of the technical information will overlap (how they do...)
