We had a great time at Universal Studios. We arrived early and were able to do some of the attractions twice in a row without queueing. Rides to do in the morning if you don't want to queue for 70mins in the afternoon are: Transformers, Jurassic Park, the Mummy and the Simpsons.
The waiting times shown are accurate. There are big boards in the park that indicate all the waiting times. This allows you to target what you want to do in what area of the Park and how long you will have to wait.
As expected in the afternoon (and on a sunny day), queues will be longer. However nothing unbearable. The maximum we waited was 45mins for the studio tour. We barely noticed the wait as the queue kept moving forward.
We loved the Studio Tour, Waterworld, Jurassic Park and the Simpsons. We enjoyed Transformers, Shrek, the animal actors. We could have done without the House of Horrors or the Special Effect stage.
Food wise. We had the hot dog combos at Pink's for $10 each. Nothing special but did the trick.
Had a warm fresh cinnabun from Cinnabon in the evening in lieu of dinner. It was very filling and tasty.
To those who want an honest comparison between the Hollywood park and the Orlando Park I will say: if you like rides go to Orlando, if you like the "making of" or "behind the scenes" go to Hollywood. We have been to both and enjoyed them equally.
Buy your tickets online. It will save you time.
I will say that on both occasions that we bought tickets online, we had minor problems. The website timed out and there wasn't any trace of our payments. We put in our bank details again and we were charged twice. However money was back into our account 48 or 72 hours later.
I recommend getting there for the opening. Be sure to check the website as opening times vary (depending on seasons and holidays).
