“Good meal, would come again”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 16, 2012 via mobile

We ended up at Simon's Cafe on a fluke - the sushi restaurant next door we'd intended to try was closed. Being hungry and tired from a long day of travel, we decided to give Simon's a try and were pleasantly surprised.

We were waited on by Simon himself, the chef and owner - a very nice man. My wife and I shared a vegetarian combo appetizer, which was perfect for two. The falafel was very fresh, and the baba ganoush and hummus were great as well. The bread was also hot and very fresh.

We also shared an order of vegetable couscous for an entree. The vegetables were served in a broth, and the couscous came out in a tagine. The couscous was very flavorful, but it felt like the veggies could have used a little more seasoning.

Overall, the food was good and the service was friendly. We would definitely come back if we are in the area again.

“Amazing Surprise”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 9, 2012

The initial impression of this restaurant is that it is a hole-in-the-wall with little to recommend it except an unusual ethnic cuisine and modest price. It is located almost under the I-405 near the intersection of Ventura and Sepulveda. We came across it at lunch time while waiting for our nearby hotel room to be made available. It is tucked amid several other restaurants of various ethnicity, and the decor is simple but with a definite Moroccan theme.

We were waited on by an older, quiet spoken gentlemen, and noticed a similarity between him and a sketch hung on the wall. We ordered pasta dishes, and first received an excellent soup, I believe lentil.

Prior to the arrival of the pasta dishes, I went to the rest room and noticed a bulletin board with various newspaper articles and commendations for the restaurant and owner. The fascinating history of the owner is that he is a Jewish man from Morocco, and had operated restaurants in Morocco, Israel and Japan, prior to coming to this out of the way site in Los Angeles. And yes, the owner was the man waiting on us.

The food was great, made especially wonderful by the fact that when we walked in we had expected little out of the ordinary. The price was modest, at least for LA standards, although our visit was only for lunch and not for dinner.

This is not the place to try to impress a business client or to propose. But if you are looking for an exceptional dining experience without the thrills, Simon's Cafe is a good bet.
