“Looks Nice Taste Not There”

The drinks are good, but you should have a few before eating since the food is boring. My husband had the lamb and it made him ill, not five minutes out the door. My salmon was was over cooked, veggies were just plain and well undercooked. This cafe is close to my home but I surley will go somewhere else from now on.

“Needs to decide wat it wants to be”

I’ve wanted to try Ambrosia since moving to Long Beach 6 months ago. Driving by the location on Cherry and 3rd the exterior looks very inviting with a garden setting and little white lights strung around.

We finally got around to getting there and the first challenge was finding parking. Like anywhere else in Long Beach, parking is difficult. I expected a valet for the level of restaurant this seems to want to be. After driving around the block several times we saw a small sign off of Cherry St for Ambrosia parking. The parking is tucked behind a scary liquor store and not at all well let. The entrance to the restaurant takes you through a courtyard garden which had fire pits going which was very cozy on a chilly December night. We could see fireplaces also lit inside of the two visible dining rooms. The courtyard dining room although tarped and heated for the season was still a little chilly so we opted for the inside dining room. There were only a few tables of customers so we could choose were we sat and selected a nice table in the corner by the wine cabinets and fireplace.

The waiter was immediately at our table. We ordered cocktails but were advised that Ambrosia had just recently obtained it’s liquor license and the vodka they had was not very good. They had a fairly extensive wine list but the waiter was very quick to suggest a wine. The wine suggested was ok but not great. They must have been having a sales promotion or something because the waiter continued to suggest this wine to every other table that came in. I would have preferred to review the wine list some more but the way the wine was being pushed we almost had to try it.

We both ordered the Navy Bean soup which was the soup of the day. The soup arrived quickly but was less than hot and not very flavorful. We both felt it tasted like vegetable soup with beans added. Another turn off was that the spoon brought with my soup was dirty. For entrees my wife ordered the Lamb Chops and I the Filet Mignon Stroganoff. The entrees arrived with just the right wait after the soup course. My wife’s platter was declared very hot by the waiter and had obviously been held in the oven. The chops were cooked as requested and tasty. They were served with a huge helping of mashed potatoes. The menu said the Stroganoff was served with a choice of rice or pasta but I was not given an option and it came with rice. The sauce was very good but in contrast to my wife’s plate, the entrée was not very warm. The rice was practically cold. While looking at the menu prior to ordering I had spied a banana desert that sounded delicious and was looking forward to having that but the waiter brought out a complimentary baklava so we never had an opportunity to order desert. Once the baklava was brought out and finished we had to flag down someone to get our check for us. While waiting for the check we could here the two waiters walking through the restaurant talking about other customers that had just left and being generally loud.

Ambrosia is a weird place. There is a lot of potential here with the garden setting, the fireplaces, etc. The décor is all over the place and the dining room was being used for storage in the corners. The wine cabinets took a full wall but were cheap pine cabinets with sliding glass doors that looked like they had come from the 60’s or 70’s. The ceiling fans looked like they were out of a 70’s hunting lodge. There seemed to be a nice selection of wines but we never had an opportunity to explore beyond the wine selection of the waiter. The menu is extensive and seems to want to be mostly Greek and Mediterranean but whatever direction they go in, the kitchen needs to work on timing and temperature control. All in all not a great experience and for a $100 dinner not really worth a re try.

“Gorgeous setting, great appetizers, entrees hit and miss”

I gave Ambrosia four stars because of its unique and beautiful garden setting. It actually has more outdoor tables than indoor. There are lush plants, a fountain/waterfall, koi pond and two fireplaces. Extremely good atmosphere.

It's owned by a Greek couple who are very nice, and they are open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. I have been for lunch and dinner several times.

The sandwiches are pretty good and come with either fries, salad or the Greek egg-lemon soup (delicious!).

The dinner menu has many selections and wonderful appetizers. Try the beet salad--it has the beets themselves plus their greens sauteed and served with them. They're tossed in fruity olive oil and fresh garlic. Not to be missed. The octopus salad is a winner, too, and the saganaki (fried Greek cheese that is set ablaze at your table) is not only tasty but a lot of fun.

Dinner entrees include everything from fresh grilled swordfish (great) to beef stroganoff to filet mignon to grilled lamb chops (overcooked the night we were there). They have traditional Greek dishes like moussaka and pastitsio and some more unusual ones like kokkonisto, a beef ragout over either rice or noodles which is really good.

They serve beer and wine and have a "half off the price of your wine" deal on Wednesdays. Prices are moderate to a little bit high, especially in this economy.

The best bet is to go for wine and some appetizers and take it from there.
