“Great location!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 19, 2013

I was here for one day and decided to return the follow week for two more days. Excellent location. Queen Mary is just behind the hotel with a great walking/running trail 3 miles of side walks. Rooms are very clean and beds are very comfortable. Relaxing fireplaces on beach every night. Great access to 110. Hotel restaurant Fuego was very good. Guacamole and salsa is a must!

At first we thought we would never find it! It seems like you made a wrong turn and ended up in the Queen Mary parking lot and then we saw a second gate and the hotel was right there. It is situated so that you avoid the unatractive view of Long Beach and just see the bridge and causeway. The hotel has so many elements of color, design and texture. My grandson and I just walked around to look at everything. At night it turns into a beautiful delight. You could imagine being on some exotic island. They light up the fire pits and the music is not over bearing. The bar area and restaurant are very relaxing and the food was good. It beats the hussle bustle of LA and is near the Queen Mary, Shopping, Aquarium and food. A great find if you have to be in Long Beach!

Room Tip: We stayed in a ocean view room and it was great. The view of the Queen Mary at night was beautiful...

Thanks for the great review. I am glad you got to explore the grounds with your grandson and family. The Maya is a hidden retreat full of little surprises like waterfalls and fire pits throughout the grounds. It is a perfect getaway for the leisure guest in Long beach.

You may get a bit lost because this hotel is tucked away from the noisy crowd. It was very relaxing, we had a view of the small harbor from our window. The pool area had cabanas where you can sit and talk. And they also have fires so you can sit out in the summer and talk late into the night. There is a good restaurant and bar called the Fuego, You will also get a very nice view of the Queen Mary which is on the same side of the bay. Yes you could take a walk from the Maya to the Queen Mary. It was just a nice blessing to spend a weekend at this sweet hotel. The people there are trained Hilton employees and they are very courteous and helpful, I definitely enjoyed our stay.

Room Tip: If you have HIlton Honors you can use it towards this stay. We were advised that it may get noisy i...

The good:

1. Staff. No issues and helpful. I personally don't use services like valet (this property doesn't have it anyhow), luggage or similar so only deal with front desk and restaurant staff.

2. Common areas such fire pits, torches, pool area and restaurant patio. All add to the relaxed atmosphere. It has a slight Hawaiian vibe.

3. Views from water facing rooms. It was very enjoyable to be able to open the sliding glass door, letting the cooler air in and watching the reflection of the harbor lights in the water.

4. For business, on both nights that I tested I could only get a max of 2 mbps download and 1 mbps upload. About half the speed of the best Hilton properties out there and not great but not bad. Also, the desk is large and provides ample room although I wish they put the coffee machine somewhere else - not a bid deal. The phone is near the bed but at least it's portable if you can't get a good cell signal here, although you should ... if I can get full bars on my sprint phone, all the other carriers should shine too.

5. Activities. Nice to see a hotel offering activities to guests, specifically bike rentals, tennis, etc.

The not so good:

1. As someone who virtually lives at Hilton properties for business, I appreciate the work that housekeeping does. These staff members have a direct impact on how a property is perceived, their jobs are not easy and very rarely do they get a thank you from guests like client facing staff. Two issues:

a) I had my DND (do not disturb) sign on and housekeeping still attempted to enter after a single quick knock and virtually no warning. The deadbolt stopped the door but privacy is something I value a lot when on the road. I realize each property has it's own policies but in my opinion if the DND sign is up, the only individual who should have permission to open the door is security and with good reason, like an emergency. Having the room cleaned is not enough of an emergency. I wouldn't have minded it so much if there was a knock and at least 10 seconds to respond.

b) Overall housekeeping does a good job. However as per attached photographs attention to detail is what distinguished cream of the crop properties from average ones. I wouldn't expect the a/c control panel to be cleaned daily or even weekly, but it's not that much extra effort to wipe down the build up of dust in hard to reach places once a month.

2. Parking fees do not make sense at a location like this. It would make more sense to have the fee built in or at least averaged into the rates. I realize that at some properties parking is outsourced, as well as valet service, but it appears that the lot is part of the hotel's property. I could be wrong.

3. I can kind of see what the designers were trying to do with the theme of the rooms but the decor looks somewhat confused. If nothing more, the carpets are horrible. Especially for a waterfront property, would personally rather see solid floors over carpets.

4. Noise. As other reviews have pointed out, not much can be done here. Just expect as a visitor that you will experience varying levels of noise if you stay over a weekend. In some ways this could be okay. For example, I didn't mind the conversations in the fire pits below my window. It created a festive atmosphere but is not for everyone. Also due to proximity of sailboats, you may hear some rigging noise on occasion in heavy winds but it's not too bad.

5. A/C unit. Nothing screams Motel louder than one of those units built into the window area. They are also louder and less uniform than built-in air units. At the very least, it would be nice to set digitally the temperature. GHI properties use these units yet they have digital thermostats.

Thank you for your well thought out feedback. There are pluses and minuses to every hotel. What we lack in structural features we make up for in atmosphere and view. As this is one of the oldest hotels in Long Beach being built in the mid seventies, the structure of the building does not allow for a different type of AC. It is a project we have been working on for awhile trying to come up with a solution that will work in all 40 different room types that we have. A unique building shape, creates many opportunities. :) We hear you though and are working on the AC untis. The one thing i was very concerned about what th ehousekeeper entering with a do not disturb sign. can you please email me directly at kristi.allen@hilton.com so I may figure out what housekeeper did this and review with them as it is our policy to never disturb a guest with a DND on their door. Thanks for the honest feedback and we look forward to your next stay with us!

Booked this one last minute while at a wedding reception next door since we didnt feel like driving back to AZ that night. We knew it would be nice but exceeded our expectations. Didn't have a chance to enjoy the amenities but took a walk around and would definitely stay there again. Reservations and check out was great. The concierge and bell hop VERY helpful! Convenient free shuttle stop just outside the property. We booked a garden room but had a nice peek view of the harbor. Beautiful!

Room Tip: Garden rooms are less expensive and from some of them you can still see the harbor (just not a full...

The location is wonderful and the staff was very nice and accommodating. There is a shuttle very close that will take you to the aquarium, Queen Mary, and downtown Long Beach. It's a great weekend getaway. The only negative comment is that the rooms, especially the bath room, and the property could use a face lift.

Room Tip: Try to get a room in one of the buildings closer to the lobby. We were in Building 4, which is furth...

This was our first time to the Hotel Maya. What a wonderful experience! The location is unbelievable, right on the water overlooking the harbor. I chose this hotel because we were going on a cruise to Hawaii and it is located very close to the cruise terminal. To our surprise, the hotel stay was way beyond our expectations. When you check in they give you a "warm" fresh baked chocolate cookie. The front staff was very accomodating as we arrived early and kept in touch with us via cell phone when our room was ready. The walk around the property proved to be amazing, the pool area is beautiful and the restaurant is lovely with an awesome view of the water. The wait staff was also great! At dusk, the staff lights several "fires" around the outside of the property in fire pits and tiki torches, making it even MORE inviting, The ambiance was amazing!! I told my husband we should have just stayed at the Hotel Maya for our entire vacation! We would love to go back on a return visit. Highly recommend!!!

Room Tip: Be sure and ask for a balcony room facing the harbor, preferably on an upper floor.
