I'm a tough critic in a restaurant. Most likely it's because I worked in so many of them throughout college and even grad school, and I know about things like food costs, etc., but also because I'm a good home cook. Recently I visited Nick's on 2nd after a friend in Huntington Beach recommended it. In fact, I went there the very next day, and I'm really glad I did.
Our server (so sorry I forgot her name), was superb, really knew her menu and had all of her wine bonafides - both of which are rarities these days. GM Adam Castinetti, stopped by our table, he was every bit as professional and friendly (in a genuine, not forced, sense) as the rest of the team.
A friend and I shared the Roast Chicken and the Short RIbs - both were spot on, and easily fit into the 'exceeds' category. Before we'd even finished our lunch, we'd already planned our return.
Parking is a real pain, but worth the block (or more) to get there. Definitely recommend reservations. Their corkage policy (first two bottles are N/C) is the icing on the cake.
