“historic, modern and as friendly as it gets”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 13, 2013

The boyfriend and I stayed at this awesome hotel after a day at Catalina Island (Catalina hotels were too expensive for us) for my birthday weekend. It's a beautifully restored historic hotel in the heart of downtown Long Beach. The rooms are small but remodeled so beautifully that you won't notice. I liked the high-end modern furnishings and all-white interior. It was a comfortable stay and the location is great for walking to restaurants. The staff were as friendly and helpful as it gets. We checked in and were greeted with a glass of wine from the nightly free wine tasting (my kind of place!). I liked the modernist bathroom and giant sliding mirror door. This would be a good room to do fashion photography. Or just some cool Instagram pics. We met the owner the next day and he was very hands-on and friendly and gave us breakfast eating recommendations. There is a complimentary breakfast of muffins, coffee, juice and yogurt. If you want to stay in downtown Long Beach and stay in style, I recommend the modern Varden hotel. The room rates were good, too.

I'd like to make my first review on TA on The Varden. I traveled to Long beach via Reno, NV on business and stayed for two weeknights. I left refreshed and excited to return in the future. This place is hip, relaxing, CLEAN as a WHISTLE, and a complete gem. There is a ton of history in this building and the surrounding area has a SF/NYC/LA feel. You will have local pubs (open late) and access to Gold's Gym (400 feet way). The soaps, amazing. The shampoo, legit. The price, outstanding.

A pristine, classy and European gem in the heart of downtown Long Beach. Sweet little rooms that follow the original hotel's historical foundations, great use of the space is made and each room felt twice as big as it actually was. The owners and staff were exceptional: friendly, helpful and very ready to make you feel part of the family, which includes a nightly happy hour with other guests and staff. Highly recommended.

Nice boutique hotel. Close to shops and staff is friendly and informative. The rooms were small, but very cute and clean. There's a lot of great restaurants and cool little coffee shops to explore. Walking to the beach front only took 10 minutes. So it was really good.

I loved my stay. Staff were friendly. Rooms were great. Clean, white, minimal. The afternoon drinks and the morning breakfast were also great, and unexpected. I asked for a late checkout and I got it. It's close to the train (which was how I was travelling). And within walking distance to all the things I wanted to see.
Best place I have stayed in the US on any trip, at any stage!
Its not part of a big hotel chain and I am so pleased it isn't. You are treated better.
My only suggestion would be to get a fridge. So many US hotels don't seem to have a fridge.
If I come back to Long Beach, I will only stay here.

A clean and trendy hotel well located in downtown Long Beach. Staff is friendly and morning continental breakfast is good enough to get you started. Parking is next door and very convenient. Rooms are clean but VERY small. If you're 6'6" or don't want your forehead bumping the sink while you use the toilet, you may want to pause here. Still, if size is no object, you can do a lot worse. Good value too.

Room Tip: Stairs only to the third floor, but it's definitely quieter up there.

I travel from San Diego to Los Angeles by car a few times a week duringmye busy season. When it's just too much to drive 2+ hours south at 4pm rush hour and then up at 4a the next morning to be at a 7a meeting the next day, I stay over. It took some research but I'm thrilled to have found the Varden. I prefer a smaller property as it's more personal which is important as a female traveling alone. I love the easy check in, easy parking, friendly and helpful service of every staff person I've met in my 2 visits. The price is good considering it is spotlessly clean, include wine hour and breakfast. I highly recommend the Varden, check them out, and if you're a tourist, it's very centrally located to Long Beach activities and I like it because it's so close to major freeways.

Room Tip: They areall fine, no elevator but the staff is eager to assist you upstairs with your luggage.
