My husband and I needed a room for an all-day wedding celebration in Long Beach. After finding that most of the major hotels were going for upwards of $200 for a Sat night stay, we decided to check elsewhere and found The Varden through Trip Advisor. The rate was really reasonable for this boutique style hotel. The property has that sleek European sensibility in the decor and furnishings throughout the hotel. The room was, without a doubt, small, but it actually worked best for us since we mostly needed the room to recharge during the day, freshen up for the reception, and then sleep. A/C worked great, everything was clean, and the full size mattress was very comfortable. They did have the wine tasting in the evening, but we didn't have time to check that out. Continental breakfast had a pretty good selection. The free wi-fi was a cool plus. Front desk and management were all attentive, friendly and made us feel welcome. Parking in their lot came with an add'l fee, but that was nominal; parking area is tight so be careful especially when backing out. Probably the only downside is the general area that the property is located in. While it is near the Financial District, the Pike, and all the restaurants and bars on Pine Ave, this part of downtown can still be sketchy as there are more than a few homeless / mentally unstable roaming around in the surrounding blocks as we saw the following morning walking back to the hotel from La Creperie. At night, they do secure the hotel so that only guests can access the building with their hotel keycard. Although we did see a family at the hotel, I would still say that this hotel would be best suited for couples or someone traveling solo / on business. All in all, we really enjoyed this hotel and would stay here again.
