Owner description: Clos Pepe offers private tours and tastings to the discriminating wine tourist. If you are just learning wine, or are half-interested, please do not request a tour. This is a tour for the initiated wine geek that is ready to plumb the history and depth of what wine is, was, and will be.This is a two hour experience. An hour walking in the vineyard and an hour in a private home tasting wine. This is NOT a tasting room. This is a chance to make an appointment and attend a small, private gathering to learn, taste and buy wine. It is meant for collectors, afficianados, and those that are highly passionate about all things fermented.Absolutely no kids or animals on the property. All tours start at 10:30 am, no exceptions.

“Best Ever”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 19, 2013

The absolute best vineyard tour and wine-tasting is hosted by Clos Pepe, located in the beauty of the Santa Rita Hills AVA. Clos Pepe winemaker Wes Hagen will teach you more about viticulture and wine in 1-2 hours than you could learn in a 3-day seminar. Wes educates and entertains, and the Clos Pepe wines are the bomb!

“CLOS PEPE VINEYARD”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 17, 2013

Some of the finest Pinot Noirs in the world are coming out of the Santa Rita Hills appellation of the Santa Ynez Valley; in northern Santa Barbara County (some pretty darn good Chardonnays and Shiras too). If you venture into the valley, it’s well worth making an appointment with Wes Hagen at Clos Pepe Vineyard for a tour and tasting. There are few as passionate about their trade as Wes and it is evident from the moment you meet him. The day will likely start out with a tutorial in the vineyard that goes back some three hundred million years or so and ends with an intimate tasting of that which the vineyard has bequeathed in the Pepe’s private residence, complete with cheeses selected to complement the wines. The Clos Pepe tour could very well justify the entire trip to the Valley.

“Wes Hagen and Clos Pepe are the gem of Santa Rita Hills”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 17, 2013

Although the region is growing, Clos Pepe put the Santa Rita Hills on the map for wine LONG before Sideways! Wes is everything you want in a host and tour guide... How rare is it that the winemaker gives your tour? You're guaranteed to learn a lot about the vineyard, growing practices and how different vintages are drinking right now. Last but not least, Wes is always very generous pouring tastings. Even at events he usually has something special under the table. If you're lucky enough to be "on the list" the summer BBQ is a blast every year!

“Clos Pepe = Californian Burgundy (France, not jug wine, cretin!)”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 17, 2013

If you are in SBC and have time enough to visit only one vineyard/winery make sure it is Clos Pepe! Wes is the man! Regardless of your level of expertise or interest you will be entertained and learn a lot. His wines are terroir driven, earthy, and naturally acidic gems resembling fine Burgundies. They are incredibly food friendly too and are rather refreshing. Unlike the super concentrated, brooding, ink-like wines so prevalent today (that I also love) Wes' wines are meant to be had with food and friends.
The vineyard is one of the most breath taking pieces of land you're likely to come across and is in immaculate condition. You immediately recognize that this is a labor of love. So go visit him already!
