“Good stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 1, 2012

This was our second visit to Little River Inn. Our family members who were first timers were impressed with the views, even though it was really foggy our whole stay. We enjoy the tranquility and especially the restaurant for both breakfast and dinner. The staff is friendly and courteous and the facilities are neat and clean. We feel the owners have done a good job maintaining this property, and we look forward to another visit in the not too distant future. Little RIver Inn is worth putting on your itinerary.

My wife and I live in South Florida and only get to the Northern/Central California coast every few years. We last stayed at the Albion River INN. Seeking something different but similar, we were very pleased. We stayed in a room 'across the road' for really just a little more money and it was WELL worth the added cost with virtually nothing between our bed and the ocean. The walk to the restaurant for a late night extra glass of wine or two was a bit treacherous so beware. But, it's only a 5 minute walk.

The bar is great as is the restaurant. We had both dinner and breakfast and throughly enjoyed both; especially the dinner and the nice wine list following a long drive to get there from Medford up and down and around and around.

We found the weather in early September to be somewhat depressing (though I liked the cool coming from Naples, FL) with wet and overcast only breaking one day out of 3. Then, the ocean views and walking along different trails were spectacular.

Things to do: we enjoyed some vineyards in the Anderson Valley and especially Toulouse. Also, the Hendy Woods State Park in Philo had the most amazing redwoods we've ever seen and it was a very 'do-able' walk with virtually no one else at the entire park. Please trust me on this recommendation. For more adventurous hiking, we did the Russian Gulch State Park trail (very near Mendocino) and covered about 4 1/2 miles to a waterfall. If you are not frightened off from the Mountain Lion warning sign, you will enjoy the exercise and the terrain. We finished the trail in record time with cell phones blaring and lots of yelling.

Places to eat: we enjoyed LRI on night one for a very good meal and with great service and, as mentioned, a walk home. The overall dining experience was in the B category. We went back to the Albion River Inn and would rank it the same. Lastly, the Cafe Beaujolais in Mendocino was our best meal food-wise. However, there is something to be said for being directly on the ocean.

We enjoyed the golf course, we had not noticed it when we arrived. Well maintained and during weekdays not crowded.
The website is a little difficult to navigate and when we made our room selection thinking king bed with a view ended up two double Beds. Room nice and clean, however I would suggest that if you want a unobstructive view get an upper room. We had room 162 and we could not enjoy the view because of guest walking by and you have to keep curtains drawn because you become an object for their voyeurism. The hotel should at the very least put shear curtains so at least the room could have some outside lite. Speaking of lite, because the walkway is next to the porch that in the evening you would like to sit out on is disrupted by the lite that does double duty lighting both the porch but also the walkway (no light switch). We love our dog but on this trip did not bring him, but you should be aware that having a lower floor room you are subject to someone with their pooch staying on the floor above you and they play catch well into the night.

Room Tip: Choose upper floors, stay away from 162. Unfortunitly upper floors are more expensive. Call directly...

We have been staying at the LRI most every year for many years...before, we stayed for years each year at the Heritage House but it got too pricy and then closed. On occasion we have booked one year in advance and had friends book at the same time. We stay at the oceanside cottages across the road. Fire place, jacuzzi tub, hot tub on the deck for watching the night sky, huge bed, deck for reading and watching wales or waves crashing into shore, big comfortable chairs and a dinette table ... great restaurant (and many more in Mendocino).... for us a great escape from stress of home and bay area work pressures.

Room Tip: Stay at one of the ocean side rooms

The fact that I was traveling without children may have helped bumped this review to a 5, but even with kids it would have been at least a 4.5. When I review a hotel, I write it for hotels with comparable prices. I know there are hotels in the area that are more exclusive and quiet, but they are also more expensive.

My positive experiance started with making my reservation - I booked well in advance and let them know it was our anniversary, and they went out of their way to reserve the best room in our price point. (This was a splurge for us, I would not normally spend over $200 on a room.) When we arrived we were in the room he had reserved for us, there was a convenient wood storage area next to the door for the fireplace, the fireplace was set inside, and there was a card with 2 AWESOME truffles waiting for us. We had a large room with a couch, table, and a fridge, and everything felt very clean and up to date. THe bathroom was HUGE, as was the Jacuzzi tub. Again, I felt like the bathroom was very clean, and I felt completely comfortable taking advantage of the jacuzzi tub. Another nice thing about this location is that there is a small spa and golf course on site - which we did take advantage of. Both were more than we might pay for a similar experiance closer to home, but I wasn't surprised at the increased price,a s Mendocino is so isolated.

One thing to keep in mind, is that the restaurant does get crowded, but we worked around that by having meals delivered to our room and enjoying our own great view of the ocean!

The hotel is not on the ocean side of Hwy 1, as many people have stated, but we had a second story room with a balcony, and I heard the waves crashing more than I heard any noise from traffic. We were over a grassy area, where kids do sometimes play, but again I spent more time listening to the ocean thatn I did listening to the kids.

I am sure that there are hotels with a more exclusive feel, and which may be even quieter, however, based on what I saw when I was booking our stay, they are also amore expensive.

I gave a 5 because for the price we paid, I felt like we had an amazing experiance, great encounters with the staf, good food, a cozy clean room, and a gorgeous view of the ocean.

Room Tip: If you want more privacy be sure to ask for a room with a private balconby, rather than one of the r...

We loved our stay at this Inn. We had a traditional room, which was perfect for the two of us. Attention to detail in the room was great - dining table and chairs so you could eat and look at the ocean; fridge in the bathroom; plenty of towels; great bed. Chairs and table on the deck outside too. The deck runs along the length of that building with no screens, so not totally private. In all a very clean and comfortable room...blissful with that amazing view.

The owners seem to know very well what makes people tick when they stay away from home. No fuss, very helpful and friendly staff throughout the property.

The bar is great, wonderful atmosphere and a lot of fun. The food was great too. Plenty of people we spoke to said that they have been returning to stay at this Inn for years.

There’s plenty of competition for accommodation in that area. This is the second place we’ve stayed in. The hotel we stayed in back in 2008 in Mendocino itself was absolutely no competition for this one.

We’ve paid more than we paid at Little River Inn, for a lot less elsewhere.

Wish we could have stayed longer, hope to go back.

Let's cut to the chase, without the stretch of the rugged ocean view to enjoy from the porch and close-by Mendocino there really isn't compelling reason to stay at the LRI. Although the staff is friendly and the restaurant excellent (for both dinner and breakfast), the accommodations are tired-- original without being "retro". The public spaces (lobby, sitting room and bar) have lots of historic pictures which give an interesting perspective on the area, but are not too appealing to spend time in. We left the Bay area late in the afternoon not realizing that the last portion of the drive would exhaustingly long and winding. As a stop over destination along a coastal road trip, it's not a bad place to stay one night. We stayed in a second story room with ocean view but a road separates the property from the sea so it was disappointing that we could not easily access any path to walk directly along the ocean. I would highly recommend the restaurant and stay in Mendocino overnight.

Room Tip: Arrive in the daylight to enjoy the view and avoid the dark winding roads
