“Sublime time at Little River Inn”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 2, 2012

I have been staying at the Little River Inn for over 40 years--gasp!!--but it's been at least 15 years since my last visit, and I can say it's only gotten better with time. I was traveling with my aunt, and so we got separate (and the cheapest) rooms, the Traditional Ocean View. From the minute we walked in to our rooms we were in heaven. The first thing you notice are the room-length floor to ceiling sliding glass doors, with deck and full ocean views. Then you see how beautifully the rooms are decorated, simple but tasteful. As you start exploring the room, you will find robes in the closet, a flashlight in the dresser, wine glasses chilling in the mini-fridge in the full bathroom, and even a corkscrew in the coffee goodie basket! Then you are drawn back to the deck and the rocking chairs and table, and the incredible view. Great spot for reading or sipping wine and watching the ever-changing ocean. I always worry about hotel beds (usually not too comfortable) but the bed was great and I slept like a rock. The sound of the ocean and the ringing of the buoy bell might have helped.
The restaurant at the Inn is pricey but worth it. The large windows look out in to the gardens and it's particularly lovely in the morning. The inn is located just up the hill from Van Damme State Park and there is a nice walking path down to the park entrance. I know this is a bit of a golf resort, but it's certainly not defined by it. The proximity to the ocean and the town of Mendocino make this a perfect place to stay, and I truly cannot wait to go back again. ASAP!!

Room Tip: There are more expensive rooms at LRI, but I don't think the views from the second story of the...

Ambiance wonderful, rooms exceptionally clean and spacious, top notch restaurant with great food and service, beautiful grounds with easy access to adjacent state beach and park. Great getaway facility with a definite "will return" status.

Room Tip: All rooms are good, best locations are south of office with full fireplaces. Highway noise is NOT a...

This was a great start to our California vacation. After a day of driving along the spectatular coast of northern CA, we stopped at the Little River Inn. It has a spectatular view of the ocean and our room opened on to a long porch where every room shared this view. Our room was clean and comfortable and the restaurant was excellent for dinner and breakfast. We were only there for one night, but this would have been worth staying a little longer.

On our trip we stayed in two other places, and only one night at the Little River Inn. However, we wished we had planned more time at the Little River Inn. We would have loved to explore the trails of the area more. We would have loved to play golf at the on-site golf course. The facilities were well kept, breakfast was good with plenty of food offered. Make sure you get a room with an ocean view, since ours was very good. Staff was knowledgeable and helpful in getting us familiar with the area.

I'm sitting on our front deck in room 112 overlooking the ocean, smelling our wood burning fire, and taking in the gorgeous flowers blooming directly in front of me. This is a wonderful piece of heaven. The location of the Little River Inn is very convenient to many beaches in the area and just a hop skip to Mendocino. We ate dinner here one night of our stay and it was very good as well. The bar has a fabulous view, well worth taking the time for a drink or two.
The Inn is very pet friendly, we brought our four legged family member and he enjoyed his stay as well. While in the area, we highly recommend you take in the botanical gardens in Ft. Bragg and dinner at Stevenswood just up the road. Our little two night, three day excursion to the coast has been a real treat. We may have to come back every year just to soak it all in one more time.
Almost forgot to mention the great Deli Market directly across the street. Good wine selections, excellent deli, super duper breakfast burritos and you won't believe the view in their eating area in the back of the store. Don't miss this one.
Enjoy!

Room Tip: Room 112 is terrific, on the end with great view.

For what we were paying, our room left a lot to be desired. It was basic and clean but room was old, beds were lumpy and not very comfortable and bathroom felt like a motel bathroom. That being said, we loved the staff who were warm and friendly and we loved our breakfast and dinner experiences. Food at the inn is excellent. Yes, this was ocean view...however, it's definitely not oceanfront. Our room's view was of lawn, then highway, then parking lot and then ocean. It was pretty...but we expected more. We paid over $200/nt and had an overall good experience, but we would probably try another place the next time we are in gorgeous, breathtaking Mendocino.

I would rate this inn at 3 1/2 stars at good (better than average)...not very good. If they would upgrade the rooms, it would be excellent.

Room Tip: I would choose a higher level room and not the most expensive rooms...views may be nicer and you'...

My husband and I spent only two nights at the Little River Inn, but we plan to return again soon. We stayed in the Traditional Oceanview building on the upper floor. From the room's lovely deck, the view was wonderful. If we weren't watching the kayakers and abalone divers in the beautiful cove below our room, we were reading and sipping wine. The king-sized bed was comfortable, the pillows plentiful, and the bath, though not luxurious, was good.

The food in the dining room was amazing. We sampled the flash fried calamari with mustard sauce (the best we've had), the Wedge salad with thick bacon bits and bleu cheese (my favorite dish), and my husband reported that the spring green salad was great, too, (huge, by the way). For entrees, we sampled the beef, veal, and pork meatballs with pappardelle pasta, the pinenut crusted king salmon, the Flat Iron Steak Diane, and a special, pork osso buco. All were great. The only negative would be the portion size of the pork, pretty scanty for the price charged. For dessert we sampled the ollaberry cobbler two nights in a row.
The breakfast was excellent, too. Ole's Swedish pancakes were lovely, the shrimp omelet generous. Saturday's came with a complementary glass of champagne.
The garden dining room is comfortable and beautiful! The service was friendly and efficient.
The front office staff was great, too. I had mentioned on the phone that we were taking this trip prior to my husband having a hip replacement, when we checked out, the clerks wished him a successful surgery!
One of the reasons I liked the Inn so much is that it was comfortable, but doesn't take itself too seriously!

Room Tip: I have only experienced the traditional oceanview rooms, so I can only comment on them. The view fr...
