“The Beach Trail Cottage”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed April 17, 2013

While the Glendeven Inn proper has gotten many positive reviews here, I want to warn travelers away from the Beach Trail Cottage, which is down the road from the main inn, and run by Glendeven as a stand-alone booking (no breakfast, no maid service). While the setting is gorgeous and private, the cottage itself has not been properly updated and does not meet the basic standards expected at this price point. Fridge and microwave are ancient, cheap stall shower was difficult to operate and ran out of hot water, vinyl "faux wood" kitchen flooring is cracked and even sunken down in a spot near the sink (I snagged and tore a sock on it), pale wall-to-wall living room carpet is stained. When my husband and two children stayed there in March, there was no working heat in the kitchen (space heaters were provided, but we were given no advance warning about this and learned it only upon check-in, with no partial refund offered). The lawn was overgrown and in dire need of mowing, the grounds untended. There was no extra bedding (blankets etc) provided, and only two washcloths were available in the entire cottage for four guests. Coffee was provided unattractively in Zip-lock baggies in the fridge. When I took up these problems with the managers at Glendeven, I was offered a point-by-point and rather defensive refutation, with no proper acknowledgement of the obvious problems that made this accommodation an overpriced disappointment. No partial refund was offered, despite the lack of working heat in kitchen, damaged flooring, and other issues, and despite my clear suggestion that there should be. So, buyer beware. You don't get what you pay for here, not by a long shot, and no one will take your legitimate complaints seriously should you take the time to present them. Although I have to add that with some basic upgrades and renovations (again, what one would expect at this price point), the Beach Trail Cottage could be a completely charming and worthwhile booking.

Eichenhof, Owner at Glendeven Inn, responded to this review, May 17, 2013
Dear future guests, we hope you took this review for what is worth, as we have. The only reason I have let some time go by before responding was because I have disputed this review with TripAdvisr as it does not meet their standards; it was used as to extort a discount from us after this guest checked out. And we have that threat in writing. TripAdvisor has yet to respond to my April 13 request for review of this guest’s post, and so I am writing this response.

I received a three page letter after this family checked out and some quoted highlights are below.

We appreciate and work very hard to accommodate all of our guests daily. All of them.

She complained in emails to us that the cords behind the TV were visible and should be hidden, that there were only overheard lights in the stairway which made it dangerous, that there was not butter or olive oil in our stocked kitchen, quoted here: “There was no olive oil, butter, condiments or other basic supplies so that we were able to cook for our family. We were forced us to buy all our meals/prepared foods outside the house, which cost us extra money we had not anticipated spending. Were we supposed to buy olive oil ourselves?”

(For future guests we stock the kitchen but not with any consumables for health/safety reasons, except salt/pepper, and coffee and sealed teas.)

And this note from her also, “To give you some idea of a comparison: we are presently staying in a vacation rental in Mill Valley that costs $ 110/night for a roomy 2-br 2-bath flat with gorgeous rooms and bedding, a beautiful updated walk-in shower, baskets of all sorts of products and modern kitchen with all the latest stainless steel appliances. The owners left us a bottle of wine, chocolates and a fully stocked mini-fridge with Pellegrino sodas for the kids, bottles of water, etc”

(I asked her for the contact information. It sounds too good to be true and I said I wanted to stay there!) She corrected some of this in a later email as it was overstated, but the message was clear: they got a great deal in Mill Valley and wanted us to match it.

We exchanged three emails and we were professional, courteous and responded to each of her concerns. Because she threatened extortion, we did not feel that offering a refund or discount was prudent. We thanked her for her kind feedback.

To her points above: the carpet is on a cleaning rotation and last was just cleaned again this week. The single faulty baseboard heater has been replaced. There was another functioning heater in the kitchen and the rest of the house is heated and is (and was) functioning fine at the time of her stay. The coffee containers that sprouted feet and walked away have been replaced. Springtime brings quick garden growth, and so the garden is tended and mowed weekly. The house backs to the state park, so at the property line the woods begin. We do not bushwhack or clean the state park woods.

We reviewed the “hole in the floor” that sadly snagged a sock, and found a corner of the linoleum that had pulled up. It has since been glued down.

I invite everyone interested in the cottage to view the Glendeven Photo Blog. I have posted current images of the house and grounds (taken today) for you to see. Many guests have enjoyed the house for many years. It is a lovely quiet and private accommodation three doors from the Glendeven Inn and Cobbler’s Walk properties.

We hope to see you soon! -- John, owner

We've now stayed twice at the Glendeven Inn/Inn at Cobbler's Walk and have already booked our third trip. The rooms are updated, very tastefully decorated, comfortable and clean. The grounds are picturesque and so relaxing. We stayed in the loft above the Wine Barn with our in laws and had lots of room to spread out, and enjoyed the nice, large living room with fireplace. This is a perfect place for a quiet weekend away!

Room Tip: Wine Barn is great for 4-6 people, very spacious. Only drawback is that the bedroom is close to the...

What an absolute gem of a place is Glendeven Inn. We've stayed elsewhere in the beautiful Mendocina area, but will never go anywhere but Glendeven from now on. Wonderful gourmet breakfast delived to the room, chickens to chat with, lamas to stare at -- plus a spacious, comfortable room (East Farmington) with a fireplace. Glendeven has it all and we hope you get to experience this heavenly place soon!

We were beyond pleased with our trip to Glendeven Inn! The personal touch is evident from the moment you pull in to the driveway, and continues throughout the stay. We were fortunate enough to stay in the Wine Bar(n) Loft with our 2 teenagers, and could not have been happier with the accomodations! Plenty of room for all of us, beautiful views, even a barbecue on the deck. The dinner with wine pairing exceeded all expectations, with Chef Kristy providing fabulous food and service. Thanks to everyone there who made this getaway weekend so relaxing and enjoyable!

We have returned to the Glendeven on every vacation in northern California. Every time we visit we have a great time. And we seem to always find something new that becomes one of the highlights of our California trip. On this visit, I think there were a couple of highlights. We got to feed the llamas - twice! It was a blast. And I'm really glad we tried the farm-to-table dinner because the food was excellent, really excellent, and the social aspect was also a lot of fun. Didn't get to feed the chickens but we did get to see them walking around. And somehow we must have awakened too late this trip to see John walking/exercising his dog. But we enjoyed both breakfasts - the breakfasts are definitely one of the many highlights and you often get fresh I mean fresh from their own chickens' eggs, or a quiche, whatever you end up with is excellent, delivered to your room - and both trips to the wine bar(n) were great as well. One of the wine bar(n) appetizers was a spaghetti squash dish that was fantastic! And the bruschetta the next night, also excellent. And the Husch Chenin Blanc was great, too. And I enjoyed interacting with most of the people, too, that adds a little touch to the visit as well. All in all, the food, the wine, the animals, the view, it's just a lot of FUN and that's why we keep coming back here. John ensures, somehow, a very consistent delivery of a great experience for his guests. I didn't say a lot about the farm-to-table dinner here but it was something we hadn't done on previous visits and we're SO happy we did! The food was absolutely outstanding and I was admittedly hesitant about the social aspect - a dinner with a bunch of people I don't know, at one common table, and I'm a pretty gregarious guy and I was still apprehensive - but it worked out really well. We are always happy with the Garret, all the way upstairs, because it's such a great value, I mean for that money you get to stay in a quiet room with a comfortable (queen) bed, nice amenities, great view, and the entire experience I just described; but I bet other rooms are just as great. The only other one we've previously stayed in was the Bay Loft, also a very nice room. Anyway, you're just out of your mind if you are staying anywhere near Mendocino and you don't stay here.

Room Tip: As I mentioned in my main review, you can save a little money staying in the Garret room upstairs, y...

We were incredibly fortunate to find the Glendeven Inn! My wife and I made a last minute decision to head to the Mendocino area for a weekend getaway and were rewarded with a chance booking at the Glendeven Inn. Can you say emphasis on detail!? The owners and staff go above and beyond in making your stay a memorable one. I hardly know where to begin...immaculate grounds, very friendly staff, a variety of hiking options from the parking lot of the inn, gourmet dinners prepared by wonderful Chef Kristy Wilson, wine bar, scrumptious breakfasts delivered to your room each morning, the Chronicle newspaper placed at your door each morning, management's emphasis on a sustainable philosophy of operations including farm to table ingredients for meals, conservation of resources and recycling as much as possible, and the llamas and chickens were a hoot! We will be returning, without a doubt.

Room Tip: Out suite, the Eastlin, had plenty of room, a fireplace, ocean view, and a wireless connection. (an...

We have been staying at Glendeven for many years and it just keeps getting better. The rooms are all beautiful and comfortable, the breakfasts delicious, the view spectacular and the proximity to great walks can't be beat. We are so grateful that what makes Glendeven so special has not been altered -- quiet, restful and romantic. No phones, no televisions! But we do appreciate the wifi, the farm-to-table dinner -- excellent -- and the Wine Bar(n) reception!

Room Tip: Second floor rooms have better views; two rooms do not have porches -- Bayloft and Garrett.
