“China Peak is Back”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 26, 2011

Sierra Summit Inn has been re-branded China Peak Inn. (the old original name). We spent a evening there the night before we were to pick up our son at a near by camp. The camp hosted a cocktail party at China Peak Inn and we had dinner. Delightful and clean restaurant/hotel. The lodge and dinning room have redone evoking it's original 50's feel. Staff was super nice. The mattress in the simple hotel rooms were phenomenal. Hotel will embark on a broader renovation and building program making for a terrific Huntington Lake area winter/summer family destination.

While there was a lot lacking at this place, it's location and price outweigh all the downsides. We decided to go here this year for spring snowboarding instead of Mammoth, and we will return. The facility has seen better days no doubt; even the pics I included don't adequately represent how rundown this place is, but it was so nice to just be able to let the kids get ready and walk across the parking lot to snowboard that I would have braved just about anything. We stayed in a two-bedroom suite (using the term suite loosely:). It had a coffee maker and some coffee, a functioning TV with CNN, FOX, some regular stations and HBO, and a small refrigerator (that froze everything... but oh well). It was about 1/2 the price (or less) of a similarly located facility at Mammoth, and while it doesn't have the amenities or the organization that Mammoth has, it was much less crowded- more low key. We all loved it and its rustic atmosphere!

Food, hmmm, well some of it was edible and some not, but it was part of the experience.

One issue arose while we were there; my son had a snowboarding accident and the ski patrol, while nice enough, doesn't seem very knowledgeable about sports medicine. It was a 60 mile, almost two hour, ride to Clovis Medical Center. In the end he was fine, but it would be a little scary if someone was really seriously hurt.

Sierra Summit is a lovely resort with a good skiing mountain. Much bigger than we had expected. The snow was great. The Sierra Summit Inn is a different story. While the people who work there are the nicest hotel staff we have met in a long time, the hotel itself is very run down and smelly. The rooms are so tiny that I referred to ours as "the rabbit shack" and my husband as "the prison cell". The mattress was pretty bad, the TV control did not work (even though we got new batteries) and the bathroom small; but clean. At least we had a bathroom. It would appear that the smell in the corridor came from the communal bathrooms. The resort is very family friendly; we saw rooms with multiple bunk beds and probably up to 6 people in it; the evening noise level is accordingly; but the kids crash early after skiing, it appears. Our rate for the night was $130, so our expectations had not been high, as the resort is right by the slopes; no need to drive any further. The food at the restaurant was very good but pricey. Let's not talk about the food by the slopes. We hard the resort has been acquired by Kirkwood, and we hope some necessary upgrades will take place. Hopefully, they will keep the lovely staff.
