“Cave + boat ride + scenery = good overall package”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 1, 2013 via mobile

There are more impressive caves in the US but because of the included boat ride and lake scenery, Shasta caverns is a good overall package. The tour is 2hrs total and requires going up and down 600+ steps. 5min down to ferry (pre tour start), 13 min ferry ride, 12 min bus ride to cave entrance, 40 min inside cave, 10 min walk down from cave exit to cave entrance, 12 min bus ride back down, 13 min ferry return, 10 min walk back up to parking and 10 min wasted waiting to get inside the cave and for the return ferry. Walking back up to the parking lot is the only unpleasant part and they did offer a bus but its not standard so most folks don't take it. The cave is a typical limestone cave with the best formations in the last room. Best views of Lake Shasta are from the bus (from right side bus windows going up near the bare spot and post cave exit on the walk down).

“Beautiful”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 31, 2013

Was a great experience. The tour guide was awesome with his stories and his knowledge was outstanding! The beauty and awe was amazing. The guide took you back in time to late 1800's when the cave was discovered. It was well worth it even all 650 stair steps. Well worth the trip.

“An interesting place to visit”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 19, 2013

Shasta Caverns is a privately owned Cavern and an interesting place to visit. To reach caverns, first you are taken in a boat and then a bus takes you to the top. The guides are good telling histroy, geology of the formation and some stories about the place. Even the driver who takes you up tells you all about the local natural histrory, animals and plants. it was a trip worth making.

“Unexpected Hole in the Wall”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 26, 2013

After a motorcycle ride down a narrow, curvy road off of the highway, we reached Lake Shasta. Signs pointed us to purchase tickets in the gift shop. Bring hiking boots. We walked down several ramps and a rocky path to board the boat that shuttles visitors across the lake to the caves. Within ten minutes of floating across, we hit shore and walked uphill. Be in reasonable shape to walk up stairs and hills. Caves were surprisingly large inside, located in a hole in the limestone wall above Lake Shasta. Concrete paths and stairs provide traction inside the wet, dripping cave. Over 100 stairs in the entire location. Tour was pretty good. Lots of stalactite stuff to look at. Great overall tour.
