“MUST STAY, even if you live in SoCal!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 27, 2013

Ok..I can't say enough about the location. The Surf & Sand Resort is RIGHT on the sand. I only know of 3 hotels that have this proximity to the ocean and sand ( in Southern California).

The rooms are wide open (and completely private) to the Pacific Ocean. The building is perched above the sand, which enables you to leave your sliding glass doors/thick wooden shutters open all night...to the sound of crashing waves. You cannot beat this place. Period.

Service is outstanding ( it better be for what they charge per night). That's a given.

The restaurant and bar both have ocean views.

If you want to impress a lady (or man!) for a sunset cocktail...take them to Splashes Bar, overlooking the ocean. I've shared this with many people by showing them this spot. Even many locals don't know about this place! You won't disappoint anyone by surprising someone with at least a visit during sunset, to the bar. They also offer appetizers, a somewhat limited but good menu.

The cost to stay here is not for the faint at heart. It is worth it, if one can afford it. One night is not enough. Two at minimum.

STAY IN THE TOWERS BUILDING!
The Seaside building is NOT the same experience AT ALL. One is renovated, the other isn't / has compromised views.

TIP ON HOW TO EAT ON THE CHEAP, saving your money on such an expensive hotel:

Across the street is the Gypsy Cafe/Coffee House. You can eat breakfast and lunch here (along with grabbing a great cup of coffee). Two can eat for under $15.

Lunch: walk a few blocks to one of the best places I can think of ( if you are into healthy, tasty, organic good food). No, it's not a vegan cafe. It's called THE ORANGE INN. Everything from breakfast food to lunch is AMAZING at this cottage restaurant on the ocean side of PCH. Trust me, NO ONE can say this place doesn't rock everything they make! Homemade soups, the best chicken sandwich this girls ever had, breakfast burritos, BBQ, hamburgers that will blow your mind, and smoothies made with the freshest ingredients. OMG! Go already!

Dinner - across the street on PCH, and 9 blocks north is a Mexican order counter joint. Great grub! And cheap!!!

These eating ideas will shave off the cost of the expensive rooms at S&S. I know I've saved over $400 on food and drinks by eating off-property.

Back to the hotel. I live nearby. I'd rather stay HERE, play in the ocean, investigate the tide pools - than fly to Maui. Not kidding. It's all that. You need to stay here in the Towers Building to understand....

NOTE: it will be less expensive to book a room in the Surfside Building. But realize, you are getting what you pay for! It is NOT the same experience ( unless you book the outrageously expensive Catalina Suite - the only exception). BE CAREFUL AND MAKE SURE YOU BOOK THE TOWERS BUILDING. You can thank me later for that piece of advice.

This hotel also will cater to children. Lots of fun things for them to do even at night, inside your room!

Equally as good for couples seeking solitude. You can have either here.

The valet greets you quickly and eager to help. Quick check in. Maid service accomodates you with whatever you need. The view is the best in town. The room was very big and very clean. The bed was a little soft. The decor is very homey and up to date. It's perfect if you like to be seranded by the crashing surf. Stayed on the third floor - end unit right above Splashes restaurant. Enjoyed the live music from our room that came from the restaurant for a few hours. The soaps and shampoo's were gentle on our skin and they came packaged with novel positive quotes-(loved that little bit of poisitivity) little reminders about love and life. Splashes is always great for dinner. This time we had breakfast there-it was good but the service was a just a little unorganized. The servers and hostesses were pleasant and happy to accomodate, so if they forget something just ask. We did and it was no big deal. They have activities all week and weekend long like yoga and build your own sunday as well as activities at the pool. Visit the gift shop before you leave it's terrific! The location was awesome-close to down town Laguna Beach. You can walk to shops and galleries or great restaurants.

Just spent our first family vacation here. It was absolutely amazing. We have stayed here a few times before and we never once have been let down. The staff is always so accommodating and welcoming. They have turned us on to some amazing hot spots in town. The rooms are spotless and very well maintained. If you don't like getting covered in sand and still want to lay out and enjoy the weather their pool is amazing. We have stayed at many other hotels in Laguna and there isn't a hotel that can even come close to their "standards". It's was always our couples retreat and this trip we brought along our 8 month old. They set us up with a very nice crib and were very helpful in anything that we needed.

My wife and I stayed here for two nights for her birthday getaway. We had a Surfside King room right over the sand, The furnishings were very nice and the balcony was great but the room was not exactly spacious. If I stayed here again I would get a suite as the room felt a little cramped. The staff was excellent and very helpful and service in the restaurant was excellent. The location couldn't be better both for beach access and for walking around town.

The bed and linens were excellent and very comfortable as were the patio furnishings. The single biggest annoyance was the shower. Instead of a shower curtain or sliding door there is a single pane of glass that covers half the tub and is hinged at the wall to swing in and out. The problem is that because the pane isn't attached to the tub at the bottom water runs down it and onto the floor. There is simply no way to shower without ending up with a huge puddle on the floor right in front of the toilet. It takes the shower mat and a towel to sop it up. The worst shower desihn I have ever seen.

Room Tip: Get a suite. The rooms are not very spacious.

Dear Valued Guest,

I am happy to hear you enjoyed your recent stay with us at Surf & Sand Resort!

I am sorry the size of our Surfside King Room did not meet your expectations. It is our smallest room product. For future consideration, both our Towers King and Seaview King rooms are larger and more spacious, as well as our suites.

Thank you again, for your kind words regarding rest of your visit.

Sincerely,

Joanna Bear

I booked this hotel for my fiancé's birthday getaway and it was beyond my expectations! All of the rooms have an ocean view and the waves literally crash under your balcony. The happy hour at the bar had a great view of the sunset and a great drink list. There are restaurants in walking distance but you almost don't want to leave the hotel because it is so beautiful. If you're looking for a romantic getaway this is your place!

You are right there ... over the breaking waves on the beach. How amazing! And if the sound of the breaking waves is too loud ... they have ear plugs in each room. WOW! It doesn't get any better than this. I love seeing the wild birds, the dolphins, the seals and other ocean animals from our balcony. We have been making trips to the Surf 'n Sand since the 1990's.
The customer service is exceptional. Our requests were expediently fulfilled. Everyone on the staff is so friendly. The morning brewed coffee is strong ... and free! The barrista shop is accommodating with such friendly people!
It's only a 15 minute walk into the Laguna Beach Village ... an easy walk ... or convenient free trolley ride away.
The outdoor fire pit is very enjoyable. The pool is remarkable with helpful attendants. During the summer the s'mores outside pit is popular ... and delicious.
We love the breakfast at Splashes, too.

We have been to Surf and Sand for the past 3 summers with our kids. We absolutely love it. It is pricey, but it is something we look forward to and plan for all year, despite the price. The pool area is wonderful, with the beach only steps away. Although we have always traveled with kids, I can see how there are areas around the pool just for adults, and would be very relaxing, facing the ocean. One of the best things for a busy mom like me is towels! :) I love that all the beach towels are right there at your fingertips, along with beach chairs, and even some sand toys for the kids. You are able to just tell one of the staff members how many chairs and umbrellas you want on the beach, and it's done. It is so convenient and saves me lots of time setting all that up for my big family. When we finish at the beach, we don't have to pack up our stuff, just walk back to our room to change for dinner. Lovely! It's the little things like that that are so helpful. It's a beautiful place, and our family slips into a nice routine of relaxation while there. Don't miss the spa. I had a couple of wonderful massages.

Room Tip: We prefer the rooms overlooking the beach, not the pool. One day we'd like to try the penthouse...
