My boyfriend and I loved this place and would return in a heartbeat! Located less than a block from the beach in cute downtown Laguna Beach, it looks like an old Spanish-style historic hotel from the outside. And it is! (built 1927), however our room couldn't have been more modern! We stayed in one of the rooms that has been decorated in collaboration with surf and skateboard companies, the Casa Surf Project. When we opened the door to our small suite, it was like walking into a colorful, beautiful mod art gallery. We loved it! It was exactly to our taste and style with about 12 paintings by a single artist covering all walls, even the bathroom.
Our window opened up to a partial view of the ocean and the bathroom was immaculate with the best glass shower and tall, square showerhead. Now, be advised that not all the rooms are like this. I saw a room down the hall and it looked pretty average, so choose your room wisely. The rooms facing the ocean are more expensive. Super comfortable bed. Our room even had a little nook with a beautiful Design Within Reach desk. I could stay here a week!
The breakfast was better than most with hot oatmeal, granola, eggs, meat, pastries, fruit, etc. I think this is the first hotel I've stayed at where they even had almond milk. There is a nice little courtyard for eating breakfast outside.
We were here for Thanksgiving and ate at the restaurant located in the hotel - K'ya Bistro. It was tasty and packed with people having Thanksgiving dinner. Small plates and lots of selection. A great selection of wine and specialty coctails as well. There is a rooftop bar that overlooks the ocean. It was wonderful to sip champagne and watch the sunset from up there. The service was warm and friendly. There is also a bar in the lobby. It seems everybody working here liked being here. The lobby was cozy with the fireplace going.
The hotel is close to art galleries, shops, grocery store, etc. - within walking distance of lots of restaurants and coffee shops as well. I think this would be the perfect "mom and pop" place to stay for a trip to Laguna. It had the warmth and personal touch you might not get at a large chain hotel. For example, there was an envelope with my name on it waiting for me on the bed, a welcome letter from the staff.
I wish I could have stayed longer!
