“LOCATION! LOCATION! LOCATION!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 26, 2013

I live in New England where the winters can be a magical place of sparkling snows, glistening ice cycles and dazzling contrasts of light and dark! In reality - it's mostly dark - and gets that way very early and stays that way WAY too long, the snow is a pain to maneuver through and the cold and dampness get 'old' after the first 'glow of the first snow'! So we leave all this New England 'loveliness' and head to Laguna Beach for a 9 day respite. Many hours of research later, we make reservations at The Pacific Edge Hotel on So. Coast Highway smack in the middle of the town and even more desirable - steps to the beach!
From the minute we made the reservation on line, the correspondences from the hotel were immediate and sincere, w/continual email updates and requests for any additional upgrades or services. And when I called with questions, i was treated with respect, my concerns were answered professionally and completely.

Upon arrival, the 2-bedroom apartment w/kitchen we'd reserved was less than desirable. The hotel has a unique location in that part of it is located facing So. Coast Highway. The other buildings are on the beach (literally!) with the buildings separated by a small 'lane'. Our room was facing the highway overlooking the roof lines of the other buildings sitting on the beach! NOT HAPPY! Outdated in every way. When i approached the front desk for another room - the staff went in to overtime finding us a more acceptable accommodation - and they did! We switched to a Jr Suite located on the corner of the building so we had a huge deck, feet above the sand with sweeping views of the ocean, sea life, dolphins, whales and seals! We went to sleep with the sound of the crashing waves and woke up to the same view and sounds.

The staff at Pacific Edge are wonderful! From the professionals at the front desk to the dear housekeeping staff - there was a consistent display of "what can we do to make your stay incredible"! They are also under MAJOR renovations to the building/rooms on the beach - and i can't wait to stay in any one of those rooms! The construction was ever-present while we were there but it never imposed on our experience.

Location - walk to everything - shops, restaurants, boutiques, bars, grocery stores or plunk down on the beach and never move until you have to!

I will go back to Laguna at my next opportunity - i really didn't want to leave - and would stay at The Pacific Edge in a heart beat!

Room Tip: corner suites have outstanding and unobstructed views to the ocean and are very quiet. be sure to a...

Dark, damp and way too cold—we completely understand why you'd have the urge to get away every now and then! We're so glad that you were able to soak up the sun with us. Thank you for taking the time to share your kind words: Our staff works hard to make our guests feel at home, and they'll be thrilled to hear how comfortable they made you. This location is amazing. We have stayed here 3 times and each time is as good or better. The property sits on pacific coast hwy and goes from buildings street side down to ocean front rooms. I've stayed in a king room, balcony over looking the Launa Beach and bay area which is a beautiful as places I've stayed in Hawaii. Up till Oct the water is warm enough to swim without a wet suit and is clear and blue. Always sea life to see, dolphins etc. The King room was very large with a full size refrigerator. The bed was high end for sure, slept like a baby and also brought an air mattress and slept on the balcony, nothing like hearing the ocean to lull you to sleep. There are staff that work the beach with towels and chairs and lounge chairs that are just great. All kinds of beach toys and stuff plus you can rent paddle boards there or a great surf shop right next door. There were 2 places to eat on the property that were better than average and an outdoor bar and cabana rental patio section. The staff are wonderful, on the ball to every need. There is valet parking but you can park in the neighborhood walking distance for free, no secret "no parking" signs to mess it up. There's a Ralphs store right across the street if you decide to stay in the ocean front suites with a full kitchen, and that room is again, on the water and amazing. There is also a salt water pool and jaquzi and a large play room with a ping pong table and stuff for kids so it is great for families as well. The are pet friendly and really welcome that so bring the whole family!

Room Tip: If you want an ocean King room request the one above the Bar, very large room and has refriderator...

It is true.....it's all about location, location, location! Surprise birthday weekend for my husband combined with a romantic getaway for two! We live very near Laguna Beach (about 20 minutes inland) and Laguna Beach is still one of my favorite spots in So. Calif. Stayed at Pacific Edge Feb. 9 and 10 and had one of the most relaxing weekends of my life. Booked an oceanfront corner suite and loved it! Stayed in room 109 in the Reef Tower (on the beach). We hit great weather too! Arrived at 4 Pm, checked in and headed to our suite. Now, if you expecting to drive up to the front door, valet your car and have you bags taken to your room, walk 100 feet, get into an elevator and quickly be dropped at the door to your room....stay somewhere else. This is not Vegas people...but it is one of the most beautiful spots in California. You can easily pull in to the front of the hotel from Pacific Coast Highway, enter the lovely lobby, check in and then head to your room. The lobby entrance faces PCH while the ocean front rooms face in the opposite direction facing the gorgeous Pacific, so there is a bit of walking. There is an elevator outside the lobby to get down to “sea level” so to speak, a short walk (maybe 50 feet) to your oceanfront building, another elevator to your floor and a short walk to your suite. The rooms are lovely…nothing over the top elegant but then again, you are on the beach. Our suite was very clean, lovely kitchenette with a full size fridge, table and chairs, couch and chair facing the beach and a comfortable king size bed tucked off to the side. Nice flat screen and ordered an in-room movie. Bathroom was standard and clean. Best of all, a wraparound L-shaped balcony overlooking the sand and surf! We popped open a bottle of wine (brought some snacks and drinks with us) and sat out on our balcony looking at the ocean, beach, people walking, etc. Heaven.
We took a 5 minute walk over to The Beach House restaurant where we had 5:30 Pm dinner reservations. A restaurant hidden away and only accessible by a small road (pretty much an alley) in between the buildings. This is where you valet park for the hotel as well. The Beach House is a very small, romantic restaurant where you can sit inside or out on their balcony and watch the sunset. Note: The Beach House is a popular locals place so be sure to make a reservation. Also, being a small restaurant, the tables are very close together and it can get noisy as it fills up. As the sun sets, the dining room becomes very dark….great for romance but not so great for reading the bill, so bring a small flashlight if your half blind in the dark like I am. It is a pricey place as expected. Dinner for two ran us about $100 (no bottle of wine – just a martini and a daiquiri. Try the Ciopinni if you love seafood…excellent! My husband had the grilled blackened pork chop…very good as well. Lobster bisque and fried calamari were fantastic. Nice walk after dinner back to our suite. Opened the double sliding doors and relaxed once again to the sound of the waves directly under our balcony. Woke up to the sound of the waves, had our coffee on the balcony (Keurig coffee maker in kitchenette) and took a lovely stroll on the beach. Headed over to The Deck restaurant, again within a few minutes walk. Excellent breakfast on the beach…and I mean on the beach. There is a steep staircase that leads down to The Deck and you sit on top of the sand on a deck eating breakfast. Awesome. Highly recommend the eggs benedict atop of their crab cakes with asparagus. Coffee, fresh muffin and the husband enjoyed Calif. omelet. Yummy. Now, The Beach house, The Deck restaurant and room service at Pacific Edge all use the same kitchen so the food is excellent no matter where you eat!

So yes, as some have said, Pacific Edge shows a bit of wear and tear but it is on the ocean and the salty damp air will take a toll on buildings. Pacific Edge was at one time a Vacation Village so the hotel is older and is comprised of several buildings, some oceanfront, some facing the alley way, some close to PCH. They are in the process of redecorating and putting in new beds and furniture, etc. in several buildings but just ask at the reception desk when you are booking for room details. The staff is great, very eager to please and spent much time on the phone with me while I was reserving our suite…they even booked our dinner reservation for us. Will we stay there again…for sure. Would I refer friends to Pacific Edge…absolutely.

Room Tip: Splurge and spend the money for an oceanfront room with a balcony over the sand.

You're right—Laguna Beach is one of the most beautiful spots in California, and we're honored to be here! Between the beautiful beach and stunning sunsets from your balcony, it sounds like you and your husband had a fabulous birthday/romantic getaway. Thank you for making us a part of it—it was a pleasure to host, and lovely to read your kind words. We hope to welcome both of you and back again soon!

I'm giving this hotel a 5 star rating for being exactly what it says it is. I recently spent a 4 day weekend in Laguna Beach, and was a little concerned about staying here after reading some other reviews. Have the right expectation and you will have the time of your life! Its an old hotel which means its not gonna be the Ritz or perfect. But it is extremely clean and comfortable. The linens and bed were so comfortable. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. The pools were clean and heated warm. I visited in February so the air was chilly, but the pool felt amazing. The location cannot be beat. You can walk anywhere you need to go. The beach is right there...amazing! I even stopped into the Deck beach bar. It was fun with a great sunset view! I will be back!

Room Tip: I stayed in a room that had not been remodeled yet, but opt for the ocean view room...they are even...

My boyfriend and I just wanted to relax and enjoy the beach scene for a weekend. We decided to stay at the Pacific Edge for 1 night. The Hotel staff was very professional and accommodating. The valet guys were awesome too. Pacific edge has a guy setting up chairs and umbrellas on the beach for the hotel guest, which I thought was great because we didn’t have to haul chairs to the beach. The room felt old but remodeled. The furniture was dated. The balcony was great. Everything in downtown Laguna is dated so it fits right in with the surroundings. The hotel location is awesome and I would return to this hotel.

What a great surprise this was. Traveling with my mother and made reservations not knowing what to expect. When we walked into the room and opened the door to the balcony we heard the sound of the ocean. Top floor and warm weather watching sunsets was great. Kurig coffee makers and fridge in rooms. Comfortable beds. Right on the beach too. We are planning another vacation there. Cant wait.

We might be a bit biased, but we've always felt that nothing compares to being lulled to sleep by the sound of waves crashing on the shore. What's more relaxing than that? :) We're delighted that you and your mother enjoyed your time with us. Thank you for taking the time to share your kind words. We look forward to welcoming you back!
