I have stayed here a few times and here is my take. When you pay the price, you get treated like royalty. When you book the low end room (which is still half a months rent for some!) you get a "quieter" treatment. The first time I stayed here on a corporate events I was in an over priced hotel room at the end of a hall with no view. And, you are not "in the know." Not knowing, you pull in, a bellman quickly takes your luggage (even though it is one roller bag.) You are escorted to the desk where check in is very nice and this escort handles everything across the desk. This person walks you to your room and their service deserves a substantial tip. But, your luggage comes about 10 minutes with another wonderful assistant who offers to unpack your belongings. Even without this service, you offer another substantial tip. So, with valet parking fee and two tips, you are $50-$60 lighter! Then, you are left to figure out the rest of the Montage. This last visit offered so much more. We were booked in room 142...a two room suite oceanside. This room has two full bathrooms and a private patio. Perfect. From the minute we pulled in and gave our last name, the turbines turned. Everyone welcomed us by name. We were offered bottled water right away and the attendant also brought 2 to the room (water is put in room at turn down.) A small bottle of spakling wine (shramsberg) was also complimentary. The luggage is right behind you, with an offer of shoe shine, ironing...etc. I asked (remembering from my first visit that room service coffee was $22) about a room coffee maker. The attendant advised that the coffee shop on level 1 is complimentary for guests. Unpacking the luggage, he noted the running shoes. Quickly, he offered information that the fitness is complimentary and spoke highly of the gym. He was right! He also offered information about the two beach access points.
The restaurants here are limited and really expensive. I was a bit dismayed by Studio. It was a Sunday night, and we did not anticipate reservation issues. We called down at 3:00 to be told only a 6:45 or 8:30 when we asked for 7:30. So we rushed to work out and grab a quick drink at the bar (the best red sangria I have ever had. Value too...$15 may seem pricey but the drink was sizeable and delicious. And, the bartenders have happy, unpretentious attitudes.) We got to the restaurant, and there was maybe 20% occupancy? We had at least 4 different people attending to our table. The tables never filled up. It was a fabulous dinner...just be prepared for $350+ for two (plus wine.) The chef tasting is $125/pp.
The next morning at checkout, two Montage signature hats were placed in our car, along with water. I didn't receive a hat on my first visit. The first visit I left thinking "I am glad my company is paying the bill." This time, I left being totally impressed by the staff.
Room amenities (meaning the bathroom goods!) are high quality and nice sized! They are also replenished at turn down! I nice little "takeaway" souvenir shampoo! I would expect a hotel of this caliber to put a razor and dental kit in the bathroom. Those two amenities always impress me, even though I have stash of Ritz "samples!"
The rooms, even the suites, don't have fridge access (sensored mini bar.) But, the restaurant was so good we had no "take aways!" Don't miss the chocolate truffles..they are left on the desk and easy to miss!
