“Historic Hotel, Best Location in Laguna Beach”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 weeks ago

I really enjoyed my stay at Hotel Laguna November 21-24, 2014. Such a classic and historic place right in the heart of town next to main beach-an easy walk to whereever you may wish to go whether to eat, shop, or to enjoy the ocean. George, Pam & Bellanca (sp?) all took great care of me along with one other dude I can't recall his name. The food was very good, as was the evening live music in the bar, James Clay Garrison. James actuallly was really amazing by the way, one of the best voices I've ever heard and threw down some original licks on some classic covers that were totally rockin'. As other reviewers have noted, this hotel is old having been built in 1930. Yes, it could use some updating, but I found the charm, location and history of the hotel very desirable and will be staying here again for sure. Falling asleep and waking up to sound of waves crashing on the beach from an ocean view room is tough to beat, or "very tight" as George accuratley noted.

Room Tip: The ocean view rooms are worth the extra dough.

Are you all high? Anyone giving this hotel a good review must have an extraordinarily frightening inability to judge quality. So, ok:

Pros:
- ocean proximity. We fell asleep to the sound of waves crashing. It was amazing.
- middle of town, easy walk anywhere in Laguna
- breakfast was tasty and the wait staff was awesome
- the sheets seemed clean (?)

Cons:
- super uninviting desk clerks. On check in, he tried to overcharge us. On check out, she tried to tell us we were late, then charge us before she realized her mistake.
- the hotel is creepy as hell. Dimly lit hallways, thin walls, dated decor, I felt like I was in a horror movie.
- overhead fluorescent lighting in the room.
- no air conditioning
- paper thin walls and windows. We were lucky, all we heard was our neighbors talking for a few minutes then watching some tv at normal volume.
- broken, filthy, dated furnishings
- the smell was an almost unbearable mix of cleaning products and filthy, mildewed, sweat sock smelling carpet.
- the shower head was installed for someone about 5 feet tall.
- we went through 4 towels before we found one without hair on it.
- $20 charge for a valet to take your car 3 feet from the drive to the parking spot.

Anyway, never stay here. You can eat here though, that was nice.

Although the hotel is old, it's been kept up reasonably well. Our room, facing the ocean, was warm in the afternoon, but cooled off sufficiently later on to be comfortable for sleeping (there's no air conditioning). The view in the evening of the beach and the sun setting over the sea was beautiful. Although there's a hefty charge for parking, it's very convenient and handled quite well. The on-site restaurant also is quite convenient.

Room Tip: Our room, on the top floor facing the ocean (west) was free of street noise, and had a great view of...

So adore this historic 150 year old hotel! I kept windows open to hear the ocean crashing against the beach and to feel the sea breeze, beautiful views! Stayed in a room that was so close to the water it was almost magical. Close to art galleries, eateries and shopping. Friendly, helpful staff and wonderful food that you can enjoy inside or out with such great views as you dine.

Room Tip: if you want to be super close to the beach and have two views, ask for a corner room, it's sunny...

Many think that this hotel badly needs a refurb. While this might be true, we enjoyed the quirkiness of the place and the location. It's true that the shower was way under power but the room was clean and comfortable, although it did need an easy chair - we were there for four nights. Set right on the beach, we enjoyed breakfasts and drinks on the terrace with stunning views, the staff were all very friendly (except one of the car valet men!) and the hotel had a grand and historic feel to it. We would certainly go again.

With a little investment the rooms could be really quality but apparently the owners don't care. Furniture is shabby but not chic. Shower trim cracked and shabby. No air conditioning isn't so bad since windows open to ocean breeze but no screens on windows. Plug in bathroom doesn't allow your blow dryer etc to reach. No coffee in room or lobby. No clock. Restaurant food horrible and stale. Not what we expected. A little investment in the rooms would go a long way.

The is a classic old hotel... you can imagine some of the famous old Hollywood visitors sipping cocktails around the property enjoying the incredible views! Rooms however, don't seem to have changed much in many years. They're very dated.
