My sister and her husband invited us on an RV trip to Big Sur, and most of our trip was planned out. I will say as a positive thing that we were able to get a site at this KOA by callling around 10 a.m. on the morning we were going to stay, in the middle of July, so it's huge and it does have vacancies. They really, really pack the RV's in there. They also have cabins for rent.
I was going to give it one star because of the price ($98 plus tax for six of us in one site), but then I saw someone else paid far more, so maybe we weren't as ripped off as I thought. There were lots and lots and lots of kids, my niece and nephew loved it. My husband and I were pretty down on the place though: too many kids, loud, loud. We also noticed that not everyone had wrist bands and some sites seemed to be partiers. Should say definitely were partiers with way more than 6 people on the site throughout the night and until the small hours of the morning.
It was noisy until midnight, although the kids were so tired from the pool they fell asleep and we adults had cocktails outside the RV and generally didn't mind the noise. My husband and brother-in-law met some guys from Santa Cruz and hung out with them, they liked that. Somebody from the office did cruise by around 11:45 and stop and tell people to quiet down, and it worked, pretty much. You could still hear people, but by 12:30, it was reasonably quiet (still heard doors slamming, some shouting, lots of giggling and conversation). Spaces are very, very close together.
Because there were six of us in 1 RV, we did use the public bathrooms there, and it was early in the morning, so maybe they hadn't had time to clean. Awful. Partying in evidence.
After talking to the guys from Santa Cruz, we learned there were other places a little further away and as we were in a 29 foot, we could have camped near someplace called Felton, maybe even in the redwoods. But we spent a great day in Monterey before staying here and were glad we could get a reservation and have the campsite off our minds. They were pleasant on the phone and it didn't take long to make the reservation.
It was the noisiest night we spent, even though they did try to quiet things down. People were up at 5:30 and there are SO many people staying there, of course it's going to be loud. It's a good place if you're passing through, haven't made reservations at a nicer place and need someplace last minute.
