“A Place for the Whole Family”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 7, 2011

Even though it's just my wife and I who actually stayed @ this hotel, I feel that my whole family or any other family can actually come, stay and be comfy here. The place is clean, quiet, with great rates and conveniently located in La Jolla, CA which is a gem in the San Diego area. My wife and I will definitely stay @ this place again and will recommend it to any budget-oriented families.

Room Tip: non-smoking rooms are a plus

Even though this place in in La jolla the room rates are a good deal for what you get. The hotel is really only one block form the ocean where you can daily see surfers hanging out. The breakfast is included but offers only the very minimum. Best is to go across the street to the Bagelshop. The location is central yet not noisy in the night. The service is friendly and good.
An excellent choice if you would like to stay in La Jolla but run on a small budget.

Very nice place and very welcoming, Quiet location and clean fresh rooms. Natalia, Olga and Danny on reception were great and were very helpful in accommodating us until our flight home - that was very much appreciated. We loved La Jolla and would definately return, and this would be our first choice of stay. Conveniently located for the lovely beach, it also has a small pool and a hot tub to finish the evening off. Thoroughly recomended.

Room Tip: Book early

The rooms were clean and had a good size. The pool and yacuzzi were clean, the beach was a 0,1 mille from the hotel. Many shops around. Friendly people at front desk and maintenance. It was the best Travelodge of our trip.

Pros: price, short walk to beach to watch surfers, quiet room (except for air conditioner)
Cons: noisy air conditioner, sweat smell in bathroom, breakfast starts at 7am, had to wait 8 min at checkout while reception dealt with 5 back-to-back calls (only one person to do it all).

Room Tip: There is one room on the 2nd floor in the back that has a distant view of the ocean

I was drawn to this hotel by the TA reviews and the location. I'm seldom disappointed by highly rated TA hotels but this would be an exception.

First l I'll start with the positives. The service personnel were great. The location is right down the street from a beautiful beach. While we were there the waves were crazy big and it was great fun watching the surfers. The Mexican restaurant across the street was wonderful.

Now the bad. This place is a two start motor lodge. The rooms are dated (but exceptionally clean.) Our biggest problem with this property was the noise. I'm not a light sleeper and I'm seldom bothered by noise. But this place was a sleep wrecker.

There are several factors that contribute to this problem.

First is the construction of the motel. Not sure when this motel was built but it is older and they just don't build them like this anymore. The noise we heard made it feel like there were people in the room with us! Our problem was multiplied by the fact that they initially put us in a room that was right at the top of some stairs. So people dragging their luggage up the steps were pointed right towards our room. The luggage clanking was bad enough but the guests, regardless of the hour, would carry on loud conversations as they walked to their rooms.

So you have thin walls, I'm guessing single pane glass and loud conversations. Now throw in that the motel is non-smoking. But only in the rooms. So what does the property owner do you might ask? They but an ash-can outside of our room. So these same folks that don't know to shut-up when they are walking to their rooms come and smoke and talk right outside our room. They either need a no smoking on the premises policy or a designated area. Drawing them to the front of our room wasn't appreciated.

After the first night we were ready to move but they moved us to a larger room that they have on a third level. I think they refer to it as the "penthouse." Even there the problems didn't end. The room is the same dated look and furnishings. The noise problem this night came from car alarms. First someone's alarm went off for a period of time. It was probably only a minute but from a dead sleep it seems much longer! Then two other times people locking their cars using the remote clicked them until the horn honked. (They don't know this is going to happen if they click them more than once????)

I guess the root cause of my poor review here is two fold. The property and the class of people that frequent this motel are going to be similar in most value priced properties. Seriously if you don't know not to speak in load voices right outside someone's room and you can't understand that your car horn is going to wake people up. Well I'm thinking Jeff Foxworthy has probably got a joke about you. I'm sure this review is sounding pretty snobbish. But as Garth said, "I've got friends in low places" but they just don't disturb my sleep!

Unless this is all you can afford, I strongly suggest you stay someplace else.

Room Tip: The only room I would consider would be the penthouse.

This guest says a lot of wonderful things about La Jolla Beach Travelodge, all of which are true. We are in La Jolla just 1 block from an amazing beach. All of the employees, from the housekeepers and maintenance men to the front desk staff have been here for a long time. We are like a big family and everyone cares about doing the best job possible for our guests. Su Casa restaurant is just one of the great places to eat nearby. Our housekeepers and maintenance staff do their very best to keep the rooms as clean and up to date as possible.

Before I address the complaints let me just say that their is always someone here in the office to help a guest with whatever trouble help they might need. I simple call to the front desk for a noise complaint and we will take care of it.

This guests complaints were about smoking and noise. The guest reserved the least expensive of the six different room types available. After hearing his complaints about his first night with us we moved the guest to our best room for the same rate. The "Penthouse" is the only room on the third floor and has a view of the ocean. It is bigger than the other rooms and has a sun deck around the whole room

We are not, as the guest says, a nonsmoking motel. We do still have 3 smoking rooms out of 44 for the convenience of the occasional smoking guest. We also have ashtrays outside to provide the smokers a place put their butts.

The Travelodge was built in 1957 and is a motel. The walls are cinder-block, the doors are solid core and all of the windows are double paned. We are a motel and don't make any pretense to be any thing else. There are plenty of fancy hotels in La Jolla that will cost quite a bit more than $79.95 and doubt even they can stop their guests from smoking or prevent a car alarm from sounding.

We are not perfect by any means but we do the very best with what we have. If you want a clean room in a great location at a great price with a staff that really cares then La Jolla Beach Travelodge is the place for you.

We have stayed at this Travelodge for each of the last three years, and will be back again next year. It's price and location cannot be beat and the staff have always been very friendly and accomodating. It's not the fanciest place (there are lots of those in La Jolla if that's what you want), but is clean & a great affordable base for a long family vacation. We spend most of our time prowling Windansea beach (a very short walk away and not as crowded as many of the beaches in La Jolla) and the tide pools, or walking up the shore to downtown La Jolla. The rooms are well-kept, with a nice kitchenette in many. The kitchenette allows our famiy to have meals in the room, rather than eating out all of the time.
