“What a wonderful treat!”

Staying at the Lodge at Torrey Pines was a terrific experience! My husband and I stayed at the Lodge June 24 – 27, 2013. We were celebrating our 35th wedding anniversary and were enchanted by the beautiful lodge and amazing staff. From Elizabeth and Michelle who were on Reception to Elisa, the very helpful and consummate concierge, to Kevin and the doormen, to the excellent housekeeping and room service staff, we were treated fantastically. We highly recommend the Lodge and would happily stay there again.

We stayed at the Lodge for three nights over a holiday. The Craftsman / Art Nouveau style is beautiful and well thought-out. There are amazing details everywhere you look; genuine tiger's eye and lapis inlay on the lobby counters, mosaics on the public restroom floors, a copper-hood fireplace in the bar, period woodworking and repro Tiffany lamps and glass.

The Lodge is golf-oriented, and likely best for couples and adults. There is a nice pool, but even that feels somewhat adult; and there's not much else for small kids to do on the grounds.

Best part of staying at the Lodge, other than golf and the stunning location: hiking in the state preserve that dips down to the beach, right next door; don't forget bottled water. Easy drives into both Del Mar (dinner at Jake's on the beach -- make a reservation!) and to La Jolla, for shopping and the Cove; rent a kayak or spot marine life from shore - barking sea lions, pelicans, cormorants and more.

We also visited Birch Aquarium at Scripps; and stopped by the Gliderport up the road to watch parasailers jump off the cliff and soar above our heads. There's also a nice -- and mostly empty -- gym at the Lodge, with top-notch equipment.

Brett, the concierge, gave excellent suggestions, including a casual dinner one night at Urban Plates in Del Mar Heights; $10 for a heaping plate of farm-fresh fare, with inventive vegetarian salads and scrumptious soups. The eatery is in an upscale mall, but has a fun, industrial vibe.

Our only snafu was at check-in; somehow our request for a "high-floor room" -- acknowledged weeks earlier by email -- had turned into a ground-floor room, with every other room in our "class" already sold out by the time we arrived (four hours before official check-in time).

After much back-and-forth, the Manager did find us a top-floor room with a balcony (happiness!) which, in retrospect, was likely only available due to an absurdly noisy family next door, who were in residence for our entire visit, left their adjoining balcony door open 24/7 and never put their screeching, pounding toddlers to bed before midnight.

To be fair, we were offered the chance to move after the first night, but to a lower floor; but seduced by our top-floor, open-air balcony, we foolishly wavered and stayed. As the best part of the courtyard is the peace and tranquility of the stunning pine forest, it was a bummer.

Other than that, our room was big and nicely furnished, and the beds were very comfortable!

Likewise, the staff at the Lodge were amazing; across the board, they exhibited enthusiasm and a genuine demeanor, from check-in to the valets, bellhops, waitresses etc. Everyone was unfailingly polite and friendly, and always eager to help. For a tourist area, that's rare indeed.

There are so many great things to say about The Lodge. The natural beauty of the California coast is at your doorstep and includes the Torrey Pines Reserve, which offers miles of beautiful hiking trails.
The Lodge itself is California Craftmanship at it's best and is so lovingly maintained. My husband and son golfed the north course and said it was one of the best experiences of their lives. I spent the day at the spa and can only describe the Coastal Sage Scrub as AMAZING!! My all time favorite spa treatment.
The Lodge rooms are very clean, comfortable, and beautifully appointed. The bed alone makes you never want to leave. We had dinner at Valentine's and the meal was terrific. Service was great and the food perfectly prepared and presented. Several meals at the Grille also and they were excellent.
Overall, what makes this place so special are the people. From check-in to check-out everyone is always so friendly and helpful. They seem genuinely interested in each guest and also seem to like one another. I saw so many examples of a well trained team working collaboratively together. Finally, the guests who stay at Torrey are friendly and laid back. We've stayed at resorts in California where folks were sort of snooty.......not the case here. Just a warm wonderful place to relax and enjoy the surroundings. This was our 3rd stay and we will definitely be back. Thanks to The Lodge staff for a fabulous stay once again!!

Hubby and I were looking for a short getaway for the Canada Day long weekend. Criteria: relatively easy to get to from YVR, close to golf (for him), access to spa (for me). The Lodge delivered. While the period-inspired decor wasn't our style, it was comfy enough. The standout was the service. Every single person we dealt with - and even those we simply encountered - was friendly and polite. Hubby had a great time on the golf course, and I enjoyed my spa treatments. Would certainly return.

A great property with lots of recreational choices, including great golf.

The rooms are large and tastefully decorated. The bedding is just what you'd expect from a first class place.

The staff goes out of its way to help however they can.

The food at the two on site restaurants is excellent, although there are also tons of off property options a short drive away.

My wife and I stayed here this past weekend with our 2 month old daughter. We were a little nervous as this was our daughter's first hotel stay so I sent an email to them in advance asking for a refrigerator and a crib and the fridge was already in our room when we got there and the crib was brought up a couple minutes after we got to the room so we were very happy.

The valet parking staff, the doormen, the front desk staff, and everyone we came in contact with were incredibly friendly and professional. The hotel did feel like a ski lodge which was funny since it was a pretty warm weekend in sunny San Diego. I really liked the architecture and the wood throughout the hotel and the room but my wife found it to be a little too dark for her tastes.

The room had plenty of space even with the crib beside the bed and the bathroom area was large as well. I liked that the TV had Direct TV and a wide variety of channels. The bed was probably a little too soft for my back but that's often a preference issue that I struggle with. We had a room on the 2nd floor but had a patio that walked out directly to a courtyard.

The location of the hotel is great and if I ever learn to golf I'll take advantage of the 2 courses that are steps away from the hotel. We spent a few minutes in the pool area but since our daughter is too young we didn't go in but in a few years I'm sure my daughter will love it.

Overall we had a great stay and would definitely return.

Our family of 4, two adults and two college age sons, just enjoyed a great stay at The Lodge at Torrey Pines. I was there for a short business meeting with a small group (less than 25) and the meeting room and food services were excellent. The only problem with our meeting room was that it offered a beautiful view of Hole #1 on Torrey Pines South and the Pacific Ocean beyond - what a distraction!
Our family enjoyed two connecting rooms, one with 2 queen beds for my over 6' sons, and one room with a king bed for the parents. Both rooms were quite ample, with a reading chair and ottoman, a work table, DirecTV, minibar and fridge, wireless internet and a small patio for relaxing. Each bathroom was spacious, with a single sink but plenty of marble countertop space for two and their toiletries, a shower bath, and a water closet.
The hotel includes a full-service spa, a partially shaded pool area, croquet and bocce ball recreation area, and two restaurants, one for fine dining and one for a casual breakfast, lunch or dinner. The casual restaurant, simply called the Grill, offers outdoor dining with a great view of the golfers teeing off on either the South or the North course at Torrey Pines. With the comfortable temperatures and low humidity, the outdoor dining at the grill quickly became our favorite spot for breakfast or lunch during the day. We sampled Valentien's only for weekend brunch on their outdoor deck - excellent.
I can't say enough about the genuine warmth, hospitality, attentiveness and experience of the staff. Our concierge, Lisa Marie, could not have been more helpful in selecting restaurants that suited our taste buds and the style of dining we wanted. Matthew was the first person to greet us upon our arrival, learned our names, took care of our luggage, transportation and golf bags, and by the end of the visit, we were comparing notes on our Tennessee Titans and his San Diego Chargers as we left!
Now, for golf. Expect magnificent golf with no resort frills, since this is one of the municipal courses of the City of San Diego. The Lodge has reserved preferred morning tee times on either the North or South course. Booking through the Lodge, greens fees are slightly higher than the pro shop non-resident rates. Twilight rates begin at 3PM during the summer and are substantially discounted from the daily rates. The courses get busy in late afternoon as a result; these lower rates are only available directly through the golf pro shop at Torrey Pines, not the Lodge.
The practice area is functional but definitely subpar in comparison to the rest of the golf. Expect rubber mats, credit card ball dispensers and chipping and sand areas that bear no resemblance to the actual courses.
