“Good Value”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 27, 2012

Very nice place to stay if you want to really see La Jolla. The valet parking is a necessity in La Jolla, you don't want to be feeding meters all day long if you park on the street. The hotel is within walking distance of the ocean front where the sea lions are in abundance. Staff was very knowledgeable and helpful. There is a restaurant in the hotel, but we didn't eat there. I'd stay here again.

This is a 3-Star hotel (at best) with a 4-Star price tag. The walls in our room were paper-thin, so we got to enjoy our neighbor's conversation and laughing until midnight. Then, the heater in the room was broken and could not be fixed because Housekeeping was gone for the day. Lastly, we went to the hotel gym which consisted of three ancient pieces of equipment. The treadmill and stationary bike did not work. On a positive note, the front desk and housekeeping staff were professional and kind.

Location is the reason for this rating of this hotel - walking distance to lots of restaurants, shops and the coastal walkways. We did not eat breakfast there, opting for The Cottage just down the road - great food. The queen single room was very small, but if we slept well, that would be ok, since it was clean. The mattress was horrible. I had back pain for two nights. We had just stayed 2 nights prior, at other hotels in southern californai and they were fine, plus less expensive. We will look elsewhere next time for sleep quality, but it also depends on price, since it seemed to jump from Best Western practically next door (cheap but lots of negative reviews) to $300 a night, which was out of our budget. We may inquire about plywood or other to firm up the mattress so we don't both fall into the center, with the squishy bed. Shower was nice, big and great pressure, temp. Bathroom has space to add some shelving, needed for your toiletries.

First of all ...Jason is a liar! He doesn't really have twelve kids and there is no need to buy him a sandwich.

I was actually mildly disappointed when I first arrived. La Jolla is kind of a "if you have to ask, you can't afford it" place, and the Empress ...while very nicely appointed, doesn't have that kind of air to it. We were there for almost two weeks and stayed in one of the Empress Rooms. Very comfy bed, nice sized room, but again, it didn't scream "high end."

Having said that ..the place just grows and grows on you. It just ended up feeling like home. Without exception, every single member of the staff was caring and personal without being unctuous. Maintenance is top notch. The location is fantastic, you are in an easy walk of pretty much everything in La Jolla Village and while not inexpensive, it actually is a great value for La Jolla. There is a restaurant in the hotel called Manhattan, which had incredible Italian food, and a nice piano lounge vibe (though I strongly advise the piano player/singer to NEVER try covering Adele again!). Long story writ short ...we were actually there for medical reasons ..but ended up loving the hotel and the area so much, that we will return, just for leisure and relaxation.

Room Tip: The extra amount for the Empress and the Jacuzzi rooms are worth it.

This hotel is in the center of La Jolla and you have easy access to all of the local restraunts and shops...the rooms are nice...rooms are large enough...large flat screen TVs..the place has been nicely renovated and has an elequant look about it...dark woods...upscale furnishings...reception and lounge is small and comfortable...the parking is valet and cost $18 a day...all of the staff are pleasant and helpfull...I will return...

Room Tip: The rooms in the back seem to have the best views of the ocean...

Awesome location, equally great staff and top notch continental breakfast free of charge! The front desk staff is first class all the way and we look forward to our next stay at The Empress.
