“A great step back in time”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 20, 2012

We were only there 2 nights, but loved our cabin. It was very comfortable, had every amenity we needed, and we loved the funky atmosphere of that era. The innkeeper was very helpful, letting us check in early, and check out late and being there to answer our questions. There was a basket full of goodies including coffee and popcorn that was great for those of us who are there for a short stay and not making a big trip to the grocery store. The location was perfect - in a great part of town, easy walk to the shore and to town, yet completely quiet at night, except for the gentle sound of the waves. The grounds are beautiful and we really enjoyed the dichotomy of this older and low key setting amidst the excesses of La Jolla. It's a relaxed way to visit this area without giving up any comforts, and I would highly recommend it.

Thanks so much for your descriptive and kind review for Redwood Hollow-La Jolla cottages. .We are in a wonderful beach and town location. You described the atmosphere here perfectly as "funky". There are many eccentricities that go along with this historic beach area property that was never meant to be gentrified. Please remember our return guest discount when you plan to stay with us again.

La Jolla and San Diego was our first stop on a 3 week road trip. Redwood Hollow are little cottages in a 'rustic' setting within gardens at the far end of La Jolla town. These cottages are reasonable priced (though everything there is expensive) and if you fancy somewhere quiet are perfect. As one other reviewer pointed out they are a little worn, but I think this is part of the charm.

La Jolla itself is a gorgeous place, lovely little town, great beach and lovely people. It's quite upmarket, but there is a lot of variety of places to eat and drink at whatever price range you fancy. San Diego is about a half hour drive away (there is no public transport) and is awesome, I wish we had a little longer there to explore.

Overall I would say that Redwood Hollow is a great place for somewhere basic to stay in a lovely place, however of you want something luxurious I would suggest looking at the upmarket hotel options.

Thanks so much for your review. Once you park your car or take public transportation here, every place of interest is walkable, including an almost private sandy beach about 400 feet away. Our property is reasonably priced for the area and for the amount of privacy and space the cottages have. As you alluded to in your review, we like people to know the redwood woodsy appearance of the cottages and the property. Thanks again for the descriptive review. We appreciate it.

We can now be added to the ranks of folks who consider the Wisteria cabin to be "their" cabin. We arrived on a recent Sunday afternoon for a four day stay at the Redwood Hollow Guest Cabins and were delighted to find we essentially had the place to ourselves for most of the time we were checked in.

Our Inn Keeper, Michele, was perfect in every way. She made lovely restaurant suggestions and offered pointers on vistas and things not to be missed. Thanks to her, we had some of the best meals of our lives thus far. Wow, La Jolla! Great food and coffee, ummmm.

Martin, the Owner, and all of the dedicated staff give visitors to the area the choice of a quaint, private, charming, home-spun, cozy, neighborly experience. If you are looking for load of fancy amenities and a shiny, brand new place, this is NOT for you.

However, if you seek a slower, quainter, simpler, more "old-school" enclave in which to tuck away for a restful retreat, then Redwood Hollows Guest Cottages is very worth a peek.

Room Tip: Be prepared to shift your expectations folks. None of the rooms have tubs, this is an old beach cab...

We appreciate your review and the compliments for our staff. We are small enough to give individual attention. The description captures the fact that this is a historic garden beach cottage property, never meant to be anything else from the get go. Thanks again for your perceptive description and for ther compliment for me!

We loved RedWood Hollow! It was exactly what we were looking for...a charming, historic, low key, close to the beach, live like the locals type of place. I had done my research beforehand and was not disappointed! We were also surprised with an upgrade when the LaJolla Beach Cottage became available. This cabin is a large two bedroom cottage with huge eat in kitchen and large private courtyard. The bathroom was a decent size and had a shower and tub, which was good for our 3 year old. Although I wasn't sure about being right on the street, for us it turned out to be perfect, as the courtyard provided a space for my son to play outside within eye view of the kitchen and living room. We stayed for 4 nights, but next time will stay at least a full week. The kitchen was fully stocked and we ate all our meals for the 5 days there, not originally by design but because my husband had a bout of food poisioning from bad seafood in downtown San Diego major hotel chain and wasn't up to eating out much after that! No problem though, both Vons and Jonathans (loved that store!) had great selections and cooking with all the windows and doors opened (we can't do that in 100 degree Texas heat) with a glass of wine, while listening to the evening passerbys ooglying the cabins, was pure heaven for me. The beach too was so close that my son and I could walk there and back ourselves, with all the necessities, while my husband recouped in his own bedroom (the two bedrooms REALLY came in handy this trip since he got so sick). Michele the manager was very gracious and also helped us by recommending a doctors office that would take walk ins. Overall a great location in a residental area, far enough from the tourist crowd, but close enough to the beach and all the town has to offer to make a great trip. We will be back soon so my husband can fully enjoy all that LaJolla has to offer....and this time we will eat out at least once. :)

Room Tip: Talk to staff about your needs and let them suggest perfect cottage for you!

These are charming cottages tucked away in the middle of a quiet neighborhood only 1 block from the beach. Each cottage is down a vine draped path with lots of trees and vegetation and most seem to have their own private patio/courtyard. We fell in love with this location. We bought breakfast items at a local grocery store and ate each morning under an umbrella table in our own private courtyard. We had the studio Beach Haven cottage, which was very quaint and still quite large enough for 2. It was stocked with a frig, microwave, coffee pot, toaster, coffee, hot chocolate, as well as several snacks. We realized the Beach Haven was one of the only cottages without a DVD player, but the management was kind enough to give us a key to the open cottage next door and allowed us to watch a movie there for an evening since it wasn't reserved. They were very accommodating. If you want privacy, this is a great place to get away!

Room Tip: Beach Haven studio comes with a small quaint summer cottage across the courtyard at no extra fee...t...

The location is not too bad. It's a short walk (.5 mile) to the main village. It's inside a residential neighborhood. It is a quaint little garden and cottages (beach haven). The issues include the following: the sea gulls are very loud and windows cannot be closed and if they could it probably wouldn't help as they are thin. Bring earplugs. One drawdown curtain was missing, so had to use blankets to cover window. Pillows and sheets are lumpy and old. At over $200 per night I would expect better bedding. Internet in each room was very good. Asking us to wash dishes and put the towels in the hamper is rediculous, and to take out the trash is not right. The whole interior is old and not updated in many years. It's nice to have updated TV, small fridge, and microwave, some dishes and minor snaks. No water bottle, really?! Over all I don't think it that great and could use maintenance and updates and still be quaint and cute. Location is not bad if you want to be a little further from the action. La Jolla is great. We didn't need a car feo
San Diego. Just cabs.

Thank you for your review mentioning some of the positive points about Redwood Hollow, with regards to the quiet residential neighborhood near the village, the gardens and the closeness to the beach. I am sorry that your stay with us was less than a perfect experience for you. We pride ourselves in responding immediately to any complaints or items that may not please a guest, while they are currently with us. If it were made known to us, we would have gladly made sure that your windows closed so you wouldn't have heard the loud sea gulls. We would also have supplied you with linens and a curtain which would met your needs, or even upgraded your cottage to a larger one. So far as washing your dishes and emptying the trash, we do have on our responses to inquiries that the cottages are self catering, so this is the reason we ask guests to do these tasks. We always learn from a critique, so we will take the items that are changeable under full consideration. Thanks again for taking the time to write.

This was our third weekend getaway at Redwood Hollow, and I'm certain that it won't be our last. For our most recent stay, we were in the Wisteria cabin, surrounded by plants and flowers, fresh air, and the scent of the abundant star jasmine blooming outside our windows. Stress disappeared instantly! We love the quiet, relaxing ambience and the feeling of stepping back in time. We also love that so much is within easy walking distance: beaches, restaurants, shopping, museums. Customer service at Redwood Hollow is excellent with a sincere "we care" attitude. The cottage was well-supplied with all we needed for a comfortable stay, and it was a pleasure to cook in the kitchen and enjoy lazy meals on the patio. Not all is historic -- we had a fast WiFi connection whenever we wanted. There's so much we love about Redwood Hollow that it's hard to pick a favorite aspect! Hmmm. We'll have to go there again to figure it out...
