“Beautiful, classy, but...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 21, 2013

First class, luxurious grounds, delightful and attentive staff. These are the positives. The negatives: I was put in a room what seemed like a mile away. You have to use your key to get through 3 doors/wings to get to your room. The rooms are a bit dated. For the price, you should have a walk-in shower, not a bathtub and shower curtain. The bartenders were fantastic. I hadn't eaten all day and was hungry. I decided on the fish tacos...3 delicious fried sea bass tacos, mmmm. Until that is, about 2 hours later...BAM! Food poisoning! Up all night. The next days sales calls (there on business) were torturous. OK, I'd probably stay there again, but with a room much closer to the lobby and with dinner plans off premises.

We are very, very sorry that you fell ill during your stay. I know that Chef reached out to you personally, but once again, we would like to apologize and thank you for letting us know. She pulled all of the fish taco orders and has looked into this instance with her team. We have had no other reports of food poisoning from any other guests all week and are unable to identify what would have caused such an ailment. Thank you for taking the time to write a review, 4-star no less! We hope to welcome you back and I know that Chef would love another opportunity to serve you.

Stayed here 4 nights recently. The grounds are beautiful, the common areas also. My room was spacious with a small balcony and large bathroom. The room service was fantastic...while the menu was not as extensive as some hotels, the quality was superb, and the cost very reasonable.

Room Tip: Try to get a room that does not face Torrey pines road if you want to use the balcony or open the do...

We spent two days at the Estancia in the suite. The grounds are so beautiful and well groomed and smelled delicious with flowers and scented candles. The rooms were recently renovated and well appointed with beautiful furnishings and amazing bath products, but what really makes this resort amazing is the wonderful staff! At check-in Erika was informative, welcoming and her smile lights up the room. Renzo helped us with valet and our bags and was great with directions and personalized service. Andrew, our friendly waiter at Mustangs and Burro, gave us so many wonderful places in La Jolla to visit and directions-he made our two days of exploring FABULOUS! Lisa was our early morning sunshine with coffee and delicious made to order breakfast which is great at 7 in the morning. Finally, last but not least was Patrick, the food service manager, who took the time visit with us on a personal level and make sure we were comfortable and had everything we needed. Patrick, we know you will make a great daddy in a few months and we wish you all the best! Cecilia was in the spa with the wonderful healing hands and beautiful smile melted away all of my hiking stiffness-best massage of my life! We will be back as soon as we can and look forward to seeing all of these friendly faces again. Thank you!

Room Tip: Suite overlooking pool #323

I am a San Diego native and I have stayed in this hotel three times now for romantic getaways with my husband and a girls spa weekend. I hesitate to say how much I love it because it has always been easy to book our weekends but the staff there deserves a rave review. So first impression the property and grounds, Spanish, immaculate, beautiful. Not on the beach, and the valets, who seem to do everything for you, will also give you a simple map to take the short and beautiful walk. The font desk people, after three visits, these people are amazing. They always help us with that special room, flexible check in times, directions, and they have helped me put together gifts/surprises and they always get it right. The resort is serene, the pool is salt water, the spa provides good massages and decent pedicures. I really love the restaurants, every time I have stayed we have not left the property. Mustangs and Burros is one of my favorite restaurants and I love sitting outside next to the fire pit, breakfast, healthy or if you are going for it, chiliquilies, YUM!

Room Tip: Courtyard or second floor, which is the ground floor facing west (rear of hotel)

The Estancia is beautiful - a nod to the local Spanish heritage with all of the modern amenities. I stayed a spacious suite with balconies overlooking both courtyards.

The staff was exceptional, friendly and helpful. Especially appreciated Ron at the front desk.

Try the French Toast for breakfast - awesome.

Will stay here again, and again, when I'm in the San Diego area.

Room Tip: Face inward for the nicest view - pay attention to whether the room overlooks the pool - summer time...

A hotel would really have to Wow me to get an Excellent rating. And, Estancia is worthy of this recognition.

Not sure where to start so many excellent points. The hotel room is simply charming. Bed was very comfortable! Manicured lawns and garden. The pool is nestled perfectly in a mini-type garden forest. Overall, this hotel is nice and quiet.

After breakfast, my beautiful travel companion and I just went for a walk around the hotel grounds and just felt so relaxed. We were both bummed that we only could stay one night.

We will definitely be back again and try to stay longer. Well done, Estancia.

Room Tip: If possible, try to check-in as early as you can so you can enjoy the amenities that this hotel offe...

This is a quiet, hotel with beautiful grounds and charming rooms & great staff. The salt water (heated) pool was a delight - we swam every day (and this was in Feb!!) - the hot pool nice as well. It is close to Torrey Pines Park (great hiking) and the Scripps aquarium (very interesting). It is a very quick drive into San Diego. My one complaint is their mandatory $17 per day charge for basic services that most hotels provide for free plus an additional charge for parklng which quickly adds up to a more expensive place than you were intending. The on location restaurants are good.

Room Tip: We found rooms at the very back courtyard very quiet.
