Owner description: San Diego's most desirable spot for swimming, diving and snorkeling. The water is calm and the cove is ecologically protected. There is also a world famous dive site that is located in the La Jolla ecological preserve.

Visited before but the seals, sometimes the otters and always the Pelicans never cease to please.
Some refurbishment going on at the moment but still a beautiful place with deep blue ocean and skies with nature at your feet...wonderful....

“So many fish, great wildlife”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 17, 2014

Snorkeling in La Jolla Cove is a fascinating experience. The Cove is home to a lot of Garibaldi fish, which are the world's largest damselfish, very tropical-looking. They are brilliant orange in color, with a prominent forehead and very cute faces. The Garibaldis are not scared of people; some of them swim in the very shallowest water right by the beach. A bit further out there are numerous sea bass, kelpfish, opal-eyes and other interesting fish species.

Then of course there are the California sea lions. The day I was there about nine females were having fun, lolling around and rolling about on the washed-up seaweed at the very north end of the small beach. When I left, the big male had positioned himself between the on-lookers and the females as a sort of guardian.

But while I was swimming back in to the beach from having been out pretty far, I was lucky enough to see the big male sea lion relaxing in the water less than 10 feet away from me -- quite an unexpected experience.

Currently the city is building a new lifeguard station at the Cove, so part of the top area is fenced off until this is finished.

“Beautiful Beach - limited parking”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 16, 2014

Parking is very limited and was difficult to find a space. The cove is very picturesque. The beach is clean and there is plenty to do - seal watching, snorkelling, swimming, kayaking. The walk down to the cove is a little steep with a staircase from the shower/restroom area to the beach. We didn't stay for long but the beach was very busy, not much space for sunbathing because the tide was coming in. The shower/restroom was okay for a very busy beach. Overall worth a visit.

“maybe the wrong time”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 16, 2014

This is our second visit there. On the moring of the day, it seems all the seals are playing in the sea instead of lying on the beach. Anyway, still love'in it

“Add this to your San Diego Itinery”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 16, 2014

Very fashionable part of San Diego, with nice sea frontage, shops and great restaurants. The snorkelling is supposed to be very good here, but I didn't get time to try it out. Eat at Eddie V's which had great food and lovely views.
