Red wine with BBQ? Only in California :)
Vacationing in the La Jolla area we got a hankering for BBQ, and a quick scan of online reviews brought us to Bubba's Smokehouse. The atmosphere is casual -- order from the counter and they'll bring your food to your table. The menu is reasonably extensive including traditional BBQ options (ribs, smoked meats, pulled chicken and pork), burgers, and some kid-friendly options for the less adventurous children in your party. There's a small wine and beer list as well. The staff is friendly and helpful. The location is on Prospect Street in the heart of everything.
For west coast BBQ Bubba's was about the best I've found. It's not real southern pit BBQ, but it's a fair substitute if you find yourself in La Jolla. The ribs are substantial, the smoked meats are fairly lean without being tough or dry and have a nice smoke flavor to them, and both the sweet and hot sauces are nicely complex. The hush puppies were a bit spicy for my taste (where I grew up we made them less hot and dusted them with powdered sugar) but were hot, crisp, and not at all greasy. We didn't sample any of the desserts because we were celebrating a birthday and brought our own birthday cake. The staff was entirely cool with this.
Next time I'm in La Jolla and have a yen for BBQ, I'll head back over to Bubba's. You should do the same.
