“Outstanding Location for Active Families and Adults”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 31, 2012

What a treat to stay right on the ocean in La Jolla, for a great value, within steps to ocean front action and activities that were family friendly, and for recreation enthusiasts. Having gone to school at San Diego State, I was looking for an relaxed alternative to Pacific Beach and the high density of the whole Mission Beach area, yet close to the attractions of North County and the Mission Bay area. Plus, I wanted to enjoy the proximity of hanging out in La Jolla if I wanted to. I was at the USA Triathlon Coaching conference and didn't want to stay off the beach at a convention hotel, so this was it! The experience of getting up early in the morning, walking out on my balcony and seeing how big the surf was to grab my board and head out was priceless! Plus, waking up to a civil group of people just simply enjoying walking along the beach, getting their wetsuits on to dive, heading out for a kayak experience or paddle boarding was perfect for me. Also, since they are right on the ocean you can have breakfast while the waves are breaking in front of you. Just enough security to allow you in and out access if you forget your sun tan lotion, it took me all of 2 minutes to run back to my room to get something. Overall this is a gem in La Jolla that borders Scripps Institute of Oceanography and the surrounding people and homes are easily those with which I felt comfortable - while jogging or just walking the beach. We had a 2nd floor room facing north - highly recommended if you want the value of being on the beach but not ocean front.

Room Tip: There was a little noise from above our room, people walking, etc. but who cares you want to get up...

What is not to love about a hotel you can walk around barefoot in and walk up the street to businesses and down to the beach barefoot as well?! Our family booked a week stay here on an expedia package. After reading some previous reviews, we called the hotel a week before our stay and asked to stay on the opposite end of the hotel from the truck loading area. They were happy to accomodate us.

Check in/out was a breeze. I suggest paying the $16 a day parking for the first day (especially if checking in Fri-Sun) so you can get your bearings about you. Parking on the street is fairly easy during the week.

We stayed on the first floor with a view of the park and coast in a two queen room with patio. GORGEOUS views, even though we weren't a full ocean front room. We were steps from the pool, hottub, restaurant, ocean and the play park next door where kids can play and you can watch the scuba divers and surfers getting ready to head out. Our room was spacious enough and I appreciate the bathroom is a little seperated from the main room to make it seem more private and quiet in the middle of the night. Large closet, nice size fridge, robes and in room safe. My only complaint was I wished there was a microwave.

This hotel has so much to offer and I agree with a previous review, the staff really needs to talk it up. Beach toys for kids, ping pong, DVD rental, BBQ on the beach, beach chair, umbrella and towel set up... you really don't need to bring anything from home except a swimsuit to enjoy yourself here. They also offer shuttle anywhere in La Jolla so make sure to take advantage of that as well. There is free coffee in the lobby, computer with printer and guest laundry was really reasonable.

I also wish the check in staff new a little more about the area. I asked about the nearest grocery store and the front desk person said 30 minutes away, a few days later while out exploring we found one in another area of La Jolla just a few minutes by car away. All in all, the staff was VERY friendly, they just need to be a little more informed and make sure guests know what they offer.

The restaurant over looking the beach is a bit spending for a family, but kids eat free at certain times (breakfast) so make sure to take advantage of that and who isn't willing to spend a little more to eat a great dinner with sunset views? My steak was delicious and my husband and daughters couldn't get enough of the butter fish. Service was a little slow, but worth the wait. Our server was very friendly. Breakfast was also delicious and wasn't as spendy either.

Housekeeping kept our room clean during our stay and replenished the coffee and hot chocolate daily which is nice for those chilly mornings and evenings in La Jolla.

All and all the staff here was very friendly and the accomodations were worth every penny. We are already trying to dream of a way to head back to La Jolla Shores. Thanks for the wonderful visit!

Room Tip: If you want a quite room on the weekends, ask for a room away from the hotel restaurant outdoor seat...

Its hard not to fall in love with this location and hotel. If you want to explore La Jolla beach, and Kellogg park then the La Jolla Shores is the best place to do it. The room we had was extremely spacious, and super-comfortable. We had a coastal view room, which offered a view of the beach, and was on the 1st floor which not only allowed us to walk right out into the pool area, it was only just a few steps to the beach itself. This was a wonderful experience to be able to walk a few feet to the beachfront.

As an added bonus, there was a small raised private patio to drink wine, watch and listen to the waves roll in at the back of our hotel room. If your travelling with your family, for the kids, make sure you take advantage of the free DVD rentals...they have a quite a selection of movies.

They also have some cool features like renting a BBQ, and having a campout on the beach, and melting s'mores. This is a pricey hotel, but it is well worth a one or two night stay to take full advantage of all the area has to offer. Check with the front desk, and they can give you a map of local businesses and eating places, just up the road from the hotel.

The stay at this hotel was one of the highlights of our trips. My only complaint is that I wish the front desk had been a little more forewith, in regarding to informing us about the ammenities of the hotel. We found out most of the stuff by reading the literature and booklets in the room. Make sure you ask the front desk what all the hotel has to offer, -- they have things like beach chair and towel service, free DVD rentals, and much more. The large, spacious, and clean pool area is a big attraction. They even have a "kiddie" pool for toddlers.

I would highly recommend this as a "THE" place to stay and worth "splurging" for if you are in La Jolla. When we were there it was busy, and the lower priced room we wanted to stay at got snapped up in a hurray, so we booked into a much more expensive room (the room prices can jump quite dramatically).. we stayed here on whim when we came in from the beach to the lounge, and fell in love with the beautiful decor, and large pool. It is worth the extra bucks to spend as much time as you can in their luxurious pool and beach - and relax.

To maximize savings, see if you are eligible for a "corporate rate" code and book online - if you walk-in or call the hotel, you are likely to pay a significantly higher rate. The online savings can be as much as 30%, which can bring some of the room prices down out of the stratosphere.

Room Tip: If you want to save a little, book online (online prices can save you as much as 30%) - if you walk...

The last 4 days of our family trip to California was one of our most memorable (of our 9 days with 3 different locations in California) because of La Jolla Shores Hotel! We LOVED this resort-like hotel!! I blew our budget on an ocean front room for the 3 night visit in La Jolla Shores but listening to the waves all night and day was so incredible. So worth the upgrade!! The room was clean and service was amazing.
We booked through "Expedia" -I booked 2 queens/ocean-front and received an ocean front room with one king bed for a family of 3. The staff were so accommodating and gave us a cot (but we all slept in the king!) Oh well! It was cozy!
My 8 year old loved the heated salt water pool we all loved being located so close to the beach. My husband, as well, loved to access the beach anytime to try to get some surfing in.
The location of the hotel is under 15 min to Seaworld - that was a bonus!
Our only tip for travellers is if you plan to rent surf equipment - go to every surf shop (there are quite a few within walking distance of the hotel) and compare prices. My husband was not happy with the service/price of one surf shop (recommended by the front desk) and regretted not visiting the "less popular ones".
We are looking forward to returning to this hotel for another family holiday of surfing, Seaworld and more!

We came here on our honeymoon and they treated us so well. They even gave us a complimentary wine and chocolate covered strawberries as a congrats to our marriage. Staff was super friendly, service was great, rooms clean, and location is amazing! Would recommend this hotel to anyone!

Staff went above and beyond to make us feel welcome. We have a large family (5 kids) and don't often experience this at hotels. They were truly helpful and even seemed to enjoy it. On the ocean, beautiful beach, kids eat free for breakfast (not sure if this is normal or just a special at the time), La Jolla Kayak (and others) 1-2 blocks away, 3-5 restaurants within 2-3 blocks, convenience store 2 blocks.

A welcoming hotel that is on the beach and walking distance to shops and other restaurants. It's a uphill walk to La Jolla Village but not impossible ... about a 20 min walk. Hotel has a nice restaurant that over-looks the Pacific ocean. Beach access and 'toys' for all the family. If you don't want the beach, the hotel pool is lovely too.

Room Tip: I don't think there are any bad rooms. I was attending a wedding at another location and didn...
