“Wonderful Location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 26, 2010

My boyfriend and I had a most excellent stay here! We checked in on this past Sunday and stayed until this Tuesday. From our arrival we were greeted by Benny, the Bell Captain who along with the rest of his Bell staff took care of us from "go". We were allowed to check in early to a Junior Suite 102 which had a beautiful view of the Ocean located at the end of the street. Our suite was located out in a building separate from the main hotel and off the pool area. Just around the corner from the front desk. Our suite was large had a separate sitting area with a flat screen TV and a small fridge under the counter which had plenty of cabinet space. 2 sinks one in the bathroom and one in the counter where the fridge was. Luxurious Bathrobes that I ABSOLUTELY wanted (will put on my birthday list :) Bellman "Dan" scooted us over to a local restaurant in the hotel golf cart... they will offer to take you just about anywhere and will also return to pick you up.

Service at the Front Desk was exceptional, friendly, courteous and consistently above and beyond helpful! I commend who ever does the hiring here because they have done a Fantastic job of hiring people that either love their job and sincerely want you to enjoy your stay or they do a great job in faking it LOL

Hotel is located within walking distance of all the quaint shops, it has it's own restaurant but we were not impressed with the menu... we did however take advantage of the happy hour deal the appetizers were tasty and 1/2 off as was their signature cocktail "Orange Crush". The day before the boyfriend ordered a "Cloud 9" that was the BOMB! and I got my favorite "Lemon Drop" both were flavorful but I must say this was the only place I was not impressed with the Bar Service it took a while for our appetizers to arrive and they were not as attentive as the rest of the hotel staff had been =/

All and all a very nice place to drop in during the week we get the impression that weekends here (like most places) are a zoo. Parking on the street down the hill is free so don't spend the $22.00 on valet just find a spot on the street.

Dear PSBoston7:
Thank you very much for the feedback you provided about your recent stay at the Grande Colonial. We appreciate your positive comments, as well as letting us know about a couple areas we could improve. We pride ourselves on hiring "warm, gracious and genuinely friendly" people and are happy that you noticed those same qualities in our staff, specifically in Benny and Dan. (And we're happy you had the chance to experience a ride in our golf cart. Our guests love getting carted around the Village. If you ever travel back on business, we also have an authentic London Cab that can transport you to your meetings within a 5-mile radius.) Please know that I will share your comments with our food & beverage management in hopes that next time we can "knock your socks off" in the bar. Until next time, happy travels. And thanks again.

I have stayed at this hotel several times, and it gets better and better. The service is wonderful, the staff is helpful, and the meeting rooms are comfortable. The hotel restaurant is outstanding as is the food service for meetings. The location is close to shops and restaurants, and walking down to the cliffs to view the seals is a delight.

Very nice hotel. Old, but fully updated and in good condition. Rooms on the small side but very adequate in size. Extremely good location yet quiet at night both inside the hotel and outside. Oceanview available. Very expert and accommodating staff; high level of courtesy and attentiveness. There are other excellent La Jolla hotels but I'd certainly go back here.

This lovely hotel is exceptional - classy, charming, and perfect. The only problem is that it is located in the now very dreary and drab La Jolla. We found none of the complaints on TA to be valid, but asked not to be on the street side of the hotel. I believe our room 514 may be the best there - great ocean view from FIVE windows! 406 and 506 are also very good. The icing on the cake is there gourmet restaurant - by FAR the best in So. Calif. outside of L.A.

While there, we checked out the La Jolla Inn - really a scary place, so you are warned. It is very nice on the outside, like a tenement on the inside, ugly and very smelly and dilapidated. The strong urine odor in a room they showed us was even worse. I even asked about the foul odors - the girl seemed oblivious. Probably inhales that every day.

Just returned from a 5 day stay at The Grande Colonial with my spouse. We enjoyed great service and hospitality throughout the week. Thanks to Benny the doorman; always there with a friendly greeting and a willingness to assist!

My husband and I stayed for our 10th Anniversary at the Grand Colonial. We got a great room in the "Little Hotel by the Sea". Everything was beautiful. Went to the concierge desk told them we were only going to be there for about 24hrs and they gave us fabulous restaurant recomendations and quick things to do. The problem came around 1:00am when a wedding party had an impromtu get together in the common loft area above us. We called the front desk and asked them to do something about it. They said the would, and true to their word the party was broken up. The next problem was the next morning when we checked out we ran into the people that had the party and they informed us that management told them it was us that complained. That was uncomfortable for my husband and I who just wanted to enjoy our one night away. I talked to managment and they reimbursed me my valet parking fee. Other than that it was a great hotel and the staff was great. If you stay just ask if you are going to be by a wedding party.

Dear Brownbis:
I just wanted to send you a note to say thank you for taking the time to post your review of your recent stay at our hotel. We very much appreciate the feedback. Let me apologize to you for not only the noise you experienced (our ocean-view rooftop loft/deck can be a draw for wedding parties), but, more importantly, the way it was handled. Please know that we will address this with our staff and reinforce our standards for maintaining privacy and confidentiality for all of our guests. I thank you again for your time and consideration and do hope you will have the chance to visit us again in the future.

Our family with two kids 11 and 7 stayed for a few days in April. Excellent location within walking distance to everything La Jolla has to offer. Very comfortable and well appointed rooms. I found the price to be good considering the quality and location of this hotel.

On street parking was plentiful just around the corner from the hotel, so I am glad that I saved money by not using the valet parking.

Great food and shopping within walking distance. We also enjoyed the short walk to see the seals at the Children's Beach.

Only things that would have made it better would be a warmer pool (it was the only hotel in our stay in various hotels in southern California that was not heated this time of year), and a coffee maker in the room. I found it very odd that there was no in room coffee maker in a hotel of this quality and price.
