“Great find”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 15, 2006

We stayed here for 2 nights as part of a tour of Highway 1.

We thought that both hotel and the staff were great (we didn't experience any of the problems with the front desk that other tripadvisors refer to).

The hotel is in a great location - it's very easy to walk to the beach and bars and restaurants (we ate in the bistro of George at the Cove which had wonderful views and patio heaters in the evening).

We booked an ocean facing room and asked for a high floor - it was definitely worth the extra money. The room was very large and comfortable.

La Jolla is a prettty little seaside town and very relaxing after a few nights inb the LA region. It's not far in the car to San Diego and if you are looking for something a bit more peaceful, we recommend staying in La Jolla over San Diego.

We would definitely come back to La Jolla and the Grande Colonial again.

We stayed here to celebrate my b-day and asked for an upgrade if possible which was great! Our room had a lovely view, fresh ocean breezes, bathrobes/slippers for turn down service, etc.

In reading other reviews-staff was not overly interested in us-but they accomodated us quite well and the valets were very helpful.

The location is great and while a bit of street noise-we expected this so we were fine.

We would definitely come back and stay here! The price was great and again-our room was quite spacious.

An overall theme for our stay could be summed up as al lack of consistency. While some staff were friendly, most just didn't seem capable of doing their various jobs; hence the lack of consistency. One day you could eat in the restaurant at 6:30 a.m. but the next not until 6:45 a.m. The rooms weren't vacuumed all week, even between guests. Often times after working all day, we still had to request to have our room cleaned when we returned to the hotel at 4:00 p.m.

Problems included lots of outside street and bar crowd noise, including arguments and fights at the nearby Living Room and Hard Rock Cafe. One evening the San Diego Police didn't arrive until 2:00 a.m. to quell noise complaints by several guests starting from 11:00 p.m. with problems at the Hard Rock Cafe half a block away. La Jolla has changed in recent years, no longer offering the quiet, sophisticated evenings we used to enjoy in the hotels. After our recent experience, we recommend staying away from Prospect Street due to the noise and unruly street crowd.

The restaurants remain wonderful in La Jolla and daytime shopping or wandering is still fun.

My husband and I stayed at this hotel and found it to be in a great location in La Jolla, close to the beach and various shops in the area. The hotel is a bit old but it was clean and the rooms were quite spacious.

We read some reviews on TripAdvisor before we booked this hotel and noted that quite a few people noted that the hotel staff were unemotional and sometimes quite unfriendly. We experienced the same thing! My goodness, the hotel staff really need to be friendlier, especially the front desk staff! A smile and acknowledgement and a look in the eye would be a good start.

I must say though that the valet guys are great -- they are friendly and definitely very pleasant. (They should be the ones at front desk!)

If I was to come back to this area, I am not sure whether I would stay at this hotel again depending on whether I felt picky about having a friendlier experience by the hotel staff.

Our family of 3 spent 2 nights at the Grande Colonial on August 18 and 19. Location is great in the Village - walking distance to waterfront, restaurants, and shopping. All of the staff were wonderful. Lydia, the concierge, even arranged a kayak trip and hot air balloon ride for us before our arrival; all of the reservations and information were ready when we arrived. We ate dinner and breakfast at the Nine Ten Restaurant, and thoroughly enjoyed all meals. Take advantage of the valet parking - it sure beats looking for a parking spot on your own. The only extra thing we wished for was a balcony to sit out on to enjoy our ocean view!! We would definitely return to this hotel.

I have rather mixed feelings about our stay here. First the draw backs, the staff is pretty non-emtional, as in they most likely won't even look you in the eye to say hello. The over all condition of the hotel is a bit worn. Our room layout was the oddest I have ever seen, the bathroom, make up area, and changing area are all on different sides of the room it makes it pretty non-user friendly. The room had some use on it, as the capret had worn areas and i didn't feel comfortable walking barefoot on it. The bed sheets didn't cover the last 1 foot of the matress and so your feet touched the bare mattress, pretty disturbing for the wife.

Now things we liked. The valet guys are the best, I recommend that they become the new managers of the hotel as they always greeted you with a smile and were more helpful than the counter staff. The price is also pretty reasonable. we were upgraded to a partial ocean view suite and for the price of $275 it was a pretty good deal for Socal. The location is also pretty conveinent for all of La Jolla. I most likely wouldn't stay here again, but having the entire staff act like the valet guys, I would be swayed again to stay here.

My husband and I stayed here for a romantic getaway in July. Because we booked our room early, we got a good deal on a partial ocean view room. This hotel has a casual classy atmosphere with a European flare. Short walk to ocean and village. The concierge was very helpful and friendly. The only way to describe the front desk staff is disinterested and a little depressed. But other than that, our experience was very positive. We would return to this hotel if we were able to pay under $235 again.
