It was our first time at the Grande Colonial in La Jolla. Fantastic, we enjoyed every moment. Nice and helpful staff, the location was great: We had a very nice room, room with a great view.
Simply incredible . We are coming back for sure.

Dear Ms1710: So happy to hear you enjoyed your first visit to the Grande Colonial. You certainly traveled a great distance and I'm glad we exceeded your expectatations. I'm not sure how often you travel to La Jolla from Zurich but I'm delighted to hear you will stay with us the next time you do. Thanks for choosing our hotel. Terrence Underwood, General Manager

The Grande Colonial La Jolla is our home away from home when can be in our favorite little jewel by the sea. This was our second time in Paradise and at the lovely Grande Colonial.
The rooms are large and warm, the towels are soft and fresh, the windows open to let in the ocean air. The hotel lobby, with fireplace and complimentary coffee and newspapers, is a great place to relax in the early morning before a fun day or a morning run. The staff are smiles and sunshine and helpful with any issue; just say the word.
We will be back; SOON I hope!

Room Tip: Ocean views are fantastic and well worth any extra cost.

Dear cassij01- So glad to hear that you chose to stay once again at the Grande Colonial. I especially enjoyed reading your comment about opening the windows. There are not many hotels nowadays where you can actually open the windows to enjoy the fresh air. But you can here and I'm glad you had a chance to experience that added perk to take in the sounds of the ocean. (Perhaps you were even able to hear the seals down at the Children's Pool.) Come back and see us again soon. Terrence Underwood, General Manager

There's something magical about the Grande Colonial. Perhaps it's the place itself, the beautiful lobby and rooms, or the comfortable beds. Or perhaps it's some sort of California-styled elegance that might only be found in such an amazing seaside community. I've stayed here several times, and find it quiet yet welcoming, with easy access to all that La Jolla has to offer.

This was our first time at the The Grande Colonial, but not our first trip to La Jolla. The hotel has a great location, you can't beat the location. The staff was nice and helpful. The room was clean.

Now the part we didn't like. Our room sucked. The shape and layout suggests that it wasn't originally intended to be a guest room. The room was square, the bed directly faced in the bathroom, the door didn't latch correctly on the bathroom and would open. The TV was mounted on an adjacent wall with a swing arm that would block the walkway to the desk and chair in the corner - the TV wasn't hung straight was had an annoying slight tilt. The room was very odd and not comfortable. You couldn't even open the closet door without blocking the way around the bed.

We booked direct with the hotel, months in advance. We didn't expect a lower quality room than the others on the floor. The check-in time for this hotel is at 4pm, which is very late by find other accommodations after being not happy with the room. I voiced these concerns to the staff who waived the cost of our parking. We will not be back.

Dear TheJimmyco - Needless to say, I was disappointed to read your review. It sounds like "what could go wrong with your room did go wrong". So sorry you were not happy with your accommodations. We are in the process of planning our next room’s renovation (slated for 2014) and are addressing the issue with the TVs in some of our rooms that pose a problem. We are a historic property (celebrating 100 years this year) so we are limited in what we can do to the size and shape of the guest rooms and bathrooms. But the door not latching and the TV not being hung straight are unacceptable and being looked into immediately. Thank you for bringing them to my attention. Sincerely, Terrence Underwood, General Manager

The Grande Colonial proved to be the best hotel we stayed at during our California road trip - It exceeded my expectations by a wide margin. It is a heritage hotel so has loads of character.

We had a Garden Terrace Suite which is a short walk from the main hotel (it used to be an adjoining hotel). The Suite had a small kitchenette, a complimentary tray of snacks and soft drinks in the fridge (these were all refreshed daily).

The bed was good and the bathroom very well equipped. Housekeeping did a great job and all the staff were friendly and helpful.

The location is good, right in amongst the shops and restaurants of La Jolla and only 2 minutes from the beach.

If you want to save the $25 per night valet charge there is ample street parking around - but this might be hard to get during the peak season.

If you want a nice cosy hotel room which feels like a home then this is the place to stay - if you like the umber cool urban design of the big hotel chains then this is probably not for you.

Room Tip: We stayed in a Garden Terrace Suite - it was quite at night and closer to the beach, but a one-minut...

My husband and I have been coming to The Grande Colonial for over 12 years!! We come for my birthday and our anniversary every year at the same time. We have seen staff come and go and we have NEVER had a bad experience!!! Everyone is professional, kind and willing to do whatever it takes to make our experience the "grandest " possible, and they succeed!!!! The 9-10 restaurant is one of the best in the world!!! We ate in the bar 2 nights and we had never eaten there before. It was GRAND!!! We celebrated in the dining room with the "mercy of the chef dinner" and it was INCREDIBLE!!! It is no wonder that Jason Knibb is considered one of the top chefs in San Diego!!! We will continue to return to The Grande Colonial and continue to bring friends there for as long as possible!!! Do yourself and favor and try the divine experience!!!!

Room Tip: Room 505, 405 fabulous views, large rooms, but the bathroom is small, but the hotel is 100 years ol...

Dear Emailln: Let me first wish you a very happy birthday and happy anniversary. Thank you very much for choosing to celebrate these two special occasions with us at the Grande Colonial. We appreciate your loyalty and patronage these past 12 years and look forward to celebrating with you for the next 12 years. And thanks for the kudos about NINE-TEN. We too think it's one of the best restaurants in the world. And you mention our "top chef"...Chef Jason was a contestant on Iron Chef two years ago battling Bobby Flay! And we're thrilled to announce that our sous chef, Ramon, will begin Season 11 of Top Chef, premiering Wednesday, October 2nd. We hope you'll tune in. Meanwhile, thank you again. We began our Californian trip at the beautiful beach town of La jolla, about 20 mins from San Diego. We stayed in The Grande Colonial which is perfectly positioned in the centre of La jolla surrounded by old school charm. The hotel itself is very classic intimate European in style. We were very fortunate to have a lovely room overlooking the pacific ocean. Moments walk from the beach. The Grande has a lovely elegant lobby, bar and small restaurant... Dining in the terrace overlooking the pool area is a lovely option. La jolla is full of beautiful art galleries, antique shops, jewellers. The Cottage and Codys cafes are the best place in town for breakfast.
