“Wonderful Getaway”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 3, 2013

We had a wonderful stay in the Grande Colonial. Had a lovely room with an ocean view (505), and the staff couldn't have been nicer. We also had dinner at their restaurant 910, which was also quite nice, but would recommend eating outdoors instead of indoors. Overall would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: Room 505 is a corner room with ocean views.

Thanks for taking the time to post a review about your recent visit to the Grande Colonial. Room 505 is one of my favorite rooms and I'm so glad you had an opportunity to experience it and the near perfect weather we have been having here in La Jolla. I'm also glad you had the chance to dine at NINE-TEN. It's truly one of the region's culinary gems. Thanks again, Jim.

Stayed over night at The Little Inn By the Sea. Loved the tiny kitchenette with complimentary treats. Extremely clean and nicely decorated room. Very quiet. My children loved the old fashioned elevator in the building. Steps from the Children's Pool with its very relaxed seals whom we visited first thing in the morning. Friendly Staff.

Dear Annie387:
Thank you for the review about your stay in our Little Hotel by the Sea wing. That building is truly a historic gem here in La Jolla. We converted those 8 suites from apartment rentals into extended-stay suites just a few years ago and they have been so well received, particularly by those visiting for longer periods of time or those traveling with children and needing a little more space. They are also a stone’s throw from the seals at the Children’s Pool, which is always a big attraction to our guests. Since you’re just “up the street” in Santa Monica, I hope you’ll return sooner than later.

Our California trip was the best, and a large part of that was because of our excellent stay at the Grande Colonial. The staff was friendly and helpful, our room was charming with a great view, and the location was perfect. We enjoyed dining in Nine-Ten and found it to be a "friendly" bar. We would stay there again and highly recommend it. Actually no complaints at all!

Room Tip: Ask for a corner room for the best view.

Dear Mwinch23:
What more can I say than "thanks". I'm thrilled to hear your trip to the west coast was "the best" but even happier that it was due to our hotel. I see that you also posted a review about NINE-TEN and am happy you enjoyed the burger and truffle fries. As Chef Jason posted in response to your review, we have received many, many accolades for our burger. I trust you will be back the next time you are visiting from Florida. Until then -

We have stayed in 5 star hotels that are not as good as the Grande Colonial. Friendly, charming hotel, room was perfect and food in Nine-Ten was great. Travel alot so very picky but this hotel hit all our buttons. Location is in the middle of La Jolla and perfect for dining and walking.

It's been 25 years now. We just celebrated our Silver Wedding Anniversary. But my memories of that wonderful day at The Colonial Inn (now The Grand Colonial) were rekindled when I saw this listing under La Jolla. We had our wedding reception there, in/outside, small cozy tables placed around the pool, food served in the banquet rooms near the pool, people talking, laughing, sitting and relaxing in and around the lobby/entry area. Couldn't have been more private, intimate and delightful to have all our friends eating, laughing and celebrating our marriage in this wonderful hotel. We used the lovely brick area around the pool as our dance floor, the stairs as the place for 1st toasts, to remove my garter and throw the bouquet and the landing for putting the wedding cake on display and cutting the cake. The banquet room and food provided by the Colonial Inn was amazing and convenient. I'd highly recommend this for a wedding reception location. Not cold or sterile like the bigger hotels or a church fellowship hall. We even ran down to La Jolla Cove for sunset wedding pictures, since the hotel is just a block away from the water. We came back for our 1st anniversary for a night to celebrate. Maybe we will go back again now, 25 years later, to reminesce? It would be a pleasure!

Dear Rileyswa:
A very Happy Silver Anniversary to you and your husband. What a lovely review. They say better late than never and, even 25 years later, your kind works resonate deeply. I have served as the general manager of this hotel for more than a decade and a have heard hundreds and hundreds of stories from guests just like the one you told. I am so happy to hear that the Grande Colonial still has such a special place in your heart. This being our Centennial anniversary year, we are asking for stories from past guests to add to our archives. Those who submit a story go into a monthly drawing for an overnight stay and dinner for 2 at NINE-TEN. I have added your story to our July contest. Good luck! And thanks again for the kind words. Cheers to another 25 years! Terrence Underwood, General Manager

We had a lovely room with a view. The staff could not have been friendlier. Benny, the car valet, was just a delightful man. The hotel was charming, clean and beautifully redone. We would definitely go back for a stay. It is so close to downtown La Jolla and the cove.

It was nice to read your positive comments about your recent visit. As you are probably aware, we completed a major renovation of our lobby just last year. And we are now in the preliminary stages of planning our next rooms’ renovation for 2014. We are constantly updating the property, while still maintaining our historic charm. I also wanted to thank you for your recognition of Benny. He is truly an asset to our arrival experience. Hope to see you back from Seattle soon.

After a conference in San Diego, my wife and I decided to stay a few days longer and chose The GC La Jolla after reading some great reviews. I have to say that the reviews were spot on. The staff was extremely helpfull and friendly, the room was great and the location is perfect. I highly suggest this hotel.

Dear DannyS -
I'm so glad to hear that while you were visiting San Diego on business, you made the choice to extend your trip a little longer and enjoy our fine City as a leisure guest. Especially since you came all the way from Atlanta. But I'm even happier to hear that you chose to stay at the Grande Colonial based on reviews you read from other travelers. We strive to achieve excellence at every level and encourage our customers to post online comments about their stay with us. I hope you will have an opportunity to venture West again soon.
