“Charming Hotel in La Jolla”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 25, 2013

We had a lovely room with a view. The staff could not have been friendlier. Benny, the car valet, was just a delightful man. The hotel was charming, clean and beautifully redone. We would definitely go back for a stay. It is so close to downtown La Jolla and the cove.

It was nice to read your positive comments about your recent visit. As you are probably aware, we completed a major renovation of our lobby just last year. And we are now in the preliminary stages of planning our next rooms’ renovation for 2014. We are constantly updating the property, while still maintaining our historic charm. I also wanted to thank you for your recognition of Benny. He is truly an asset to our arrival experience. Hope to see you back from Seattle soon.

After a conference in San Diego, my wife and I decided to stay a few days longer and chose The GC La Jolla after reading some great reviews. I have to say that the reviews were spot on. The staff was extremely helpfull and friendly, the room was great and the location is perfect. I highly suggest this hotel.

Dear DannyS -
I'm so glad to hear that while you were visiting San Diego on business, you made the choice to extend your trip a little longer and enjoy our fine City as a leisure guest. Especially since you came all the way from Atlanta. But I'm even happier to hear that you chose to stay at the Grande Colonial based on reviews you read from other travelers. We strive to achieve excellence at every level and encourage our customers to post online comments about their stay with us. I hope you will have an opportunity to venture West again soon.

One of the "great values" on Prospect Street. Right in the heart of town. Good rates. Wonderful service. Nicely appointed rooms. We had Ocean Views, which are a must. The only complaint is that you can hear loud talking from the rooms above. I will definitely stay there again.

Room Tip: Try to get the top floor with no one above you. And of course, Ocean Views are a must. After all...

Dear SkyKing99 -
Thank you for your positive comments about our hotel, service and location. But thank you most for your constructive feedback about the level of noise you experienced from the guest room above. This is not a comment we hear often but appreciate you bringing it to our attention. Please know that should you ever return and experience something that doesn't meet your expectations, please do let us know immediately so that we can find a solution for you. We never wish to have any guest depart without a positive experience...although it sounds like you did indeed enjoy yours. Thanks again.

We wanted to stay just outside San Diego near the beach. We love hotels with a history and this hotel fit the bill! The front desk was very helpful with information regarding the area. The hotel was a great location for access to the beach.

Dear HarleyFamily073:
So glad to hear you enjoyed your stay with us. San Diego certainly has its share of beaches to choose from and I'm happy to hear you chose those in La Jolla. Being just a block up from the Children's Pool and La Jolla Cove, we certainly provide an ideal location for those wanting to enjoy some sun, sand and swimming! Hope to see you back.

Although it does not have the accommodation one would expect today in a fine hotel, all in all it is a lovely place. It does have quirks, such as the very small bathroom; lack of in room coffee service; the closing time of the hotel bar (10PM!!) and as mentioned elsewhere the $25 a day charge for valet parking. The staff is friendly and this area of La Jolla with the short walk to the seals in Children's Cove makes this place a treat.

Dear Jimindc2007:
Thank you for taking the time to post comments about your recent visit to La Jolla and the Grande Colonial. All-in-all, it sounds like you enjoyed your stay and can appreciate the "quirks" that a historic hotel like ours has to offer. I would like to let you know that just in the past two weeks, we have added Keurig single serving coffee makers to all 93 of our guest rooms and suites. Hopefully you will come back and enjoy that added amenity. Meanwhile, thank you again.

This beautiful small hotel has many advantages--close to the amazing beaches in La Jolla (especially the Children's Cove which has been taken over by seals!) and great shopping and restaurants. The staff couldn't have been nicer. They upgraded us to a larger room (without my asking). Room beautifully decorated although bathroom a tad small (but living in a Victorian house I'm used to that). Linens top notch and beds comfortable. If you can afford it, ask for Garden or Ocean view. Village view can be a bit noisy with traffic but nothing horrible. Heated pool and garden lovely. Nine-Ten restaurant fabulous. Only con: paying $25/day for valet parking. (No self-parking--parking very limiting in downtown La jolla).

Five stars even for the small rooms. People...it's an OLD hotel. I'm originally from Chicago. Hotels this old...the Hiltons (Palmer House and the one on Michigan) and the Drake and every other one over a hundred years old have really small rooms. It's just the way they were built. Expect it. But also expect history, pride, culture, and love oozing from every corner of the establishment. WORTH IT! We are on night one of our three night stay here. We were having the worst day we've had as a family in along time. The front desk made sure everything was easy and smooth as we had trouble with credit cards and banks (issues with card limits after paying contractors) They will work with anything just to have you happy and relaxed. Our room was clean with the AC working perfectly (we travel a lot and find this to be an issue). The restaurant was able to suggest the perfect dessert for our kids and had my favorite champagne. My husband had to go out four times for things the kids left in the car and no one batter an eyelash. I will stay here on all of our house mishaps and staycations. I love the treatment we've gotten and appreciate every ounce of effort put out for our needs. THANK YOU! Chose the Grand and you'll not regret it. We (all five of us) absolutely have not. P/S The cribs come with a bumper and legit mattress wit ha crib sheet and even a baby blanket. GREAT STUFF...Our beloved Hotel Del doesn't even do that.
