What a find. From the outside distance, it does look a bit like a Holiday Inn from 40 years ago, but driving up the torch lit driveway you realize this is something else. The newly renovated Hotel La Jolla has ‘moderne” stamped all over it from the open wood floored lobby with curving tables and fireplace, to the white on white outdoor bar, also with fireplace and lots of comfy cubbys to sit amongst yourselves. The rooms are pretty large with an ocean view, although the ocean is about a mile or so away. Bathrooms are interesting with a see-thru shower, although you can close a motorized blind (That took us a little while to accidentally figure out). Staff was pleasant and helpful from the valet drivers to the bellmen to the desk staff. They have free internet for Kimpton Members, which you can become right on the spot. I joined their loyalty program the night before when I booked it. My one complaint is the $24 valet parking tab, when you really don’t need valet parking at all. They have a fairly large parking lot, although some of it is behind the hotel. Other than that, and a slightly steep price, The La Jolla Hotel was the best hotel of a six-hotel SoCal trip.
