“A bit run down but a good value overall”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 27, 2012

For a family with young kids, this hotel is a good bet. The staff are friendly and accommodating, especially in the restaurant where our children were not on their best behaviour. The room is clean and comfortable, and the parking lot access to the large strip mall is a life-saver. It has easy access via the I-5 to downtown SD, the Safari Park etc. We had a room facing the pool and pleasant gardens, which is definitely worth the extra 10 dollars or so, to not face an unbecoming parking lot or the highway. The bathroom had the same problems as my bathroom at home: the stopper for the sink was on its last legs, the bathtub faucet ran a bit even with the shower on, it was a bit on the small side. The fridge was also on its way to fridge heaven, making a clattering noise every time it turned on, and the remote for the TV barely functioned.
The garden maintenance was a bit slack-we were there for 5 days and the rotting hibiscus blossoms from the first day were still on the path on day 5. It didn't look like they were sweeping or tidying more than once a week, contributing to a slightly run-down feel for the whole place. It felt like they were on an economy kick at the start of the slow season (we were there the week after Labour Day). The food at Humphrey's was not as good as the reviews here would have you believe. It is standard factory style food, e.g. my skirt steak was tiny and plain, and the breakfasts were greasy, but the staff were great.
Overall, a totally decent hotel, at a reasonable price. Not fancy, but again, with kids that is totally fine!

Room Tip: Pay the extra and get an inside room (pool and garden view).

I recently spent two nights here in the Starwood Preferred Guest area. The room, on the second floor, faced the freeway. Despite some trees between the hotel and the road, it was noisy. In addition, the third floor was under renovation, which produced unwelcome construction noise in the morning both days I was there. I hope the new rooms will be better soundproofed, since I would consider staying here again due to the hotel's proximity to the University, where a family member is a student. In addition, the grounds are very nicely landscaped with mature vegetation reminiscent of Hawaii. However, at the present time, the room I experienced was noisy and dated. Staff was friendly and helpful.

Room Tip: If you book as an SPG member in the near future, as for one of the newly renovated SPG rooms on the...

Hello David E,

Thank you for staying with us at the Sheraton La Jolla. I do apologize for the noise disturbances that you experienced during this particular stay. As you mentioned, the hotel is undergoing a rennovation of our Executive Building and we are looking forward to this being completed by the end of the year. Please know that the Executive Building has double paned windows, which generally eliminate any noise issue, but we do also feature rooms with a Garden View if you so choose and those would ensure that your room faces the quiet interior courtyard instead. I'm happy to hear you enjoyed the location and the grounds and we will look forward to welcoming you back. You would be welcome to contact me directly so that I can ensure you have a room that will work well for your stay.

Sincerely,
Kate Ruskofsky

We had a Starwood guest preferred room but the fridge did not have a freezer as it has in the past. The bathrooms are very small. There was a price increase because of the Labor Day weekend. We usually stay at this hotel because our daughter attends USD but we have decided that the price is too high for the room compared to what we get in return in the room. We do enjoy the food in the hotel. We have only ever had breakfast but we look forward to it. We look forward to being helped by Matt in the restaurant. He is A+ in our book. All the other waiters make us feel like they are doing us a favor by waiting on us, especially when they see you have a coupon for the meal. We will be booking another hotel on our next stay in San Diego.

Eight years ago, a group of friends decided to visit La Jolla and enjoy time in the surrounding areas. We reserved the Sheraton in La Jolla and have come here practically every year since that time. Small, quaint, tranquil and welcoming. Great rooms, inviting pool, terrific service, close to stores, bars and area attractions. A stone's throw from the highway but designed to look like an island garden. A great place to stay in this area.

We got a discount coupon to try their Humphrey's restaurant over labor day weekend. Because we had been to Del Mar racetrack all day, we didn't feel like going out. Glad we stayed in because the food was amazing. Figs for appetizer were straight out of a foodie TV show. The sand dabs were perfect as was my son's filet and the deserts. Breakfast was equally high-quality with tasty usual american fare.

Rooms were updated with nice dark wood shutters, nice 40 in TV and comfy beds.

Across from UCSD, near shopping, movies and easy freeway access. The pool was nice and relaxing. All in all a great value at $130/night.

Was a bit farther from USD than I would have liked, but the college had it as one of their recommended hotels. Grounds are really nice. we got a room overlooking the pool - was pretty noisy until the pool closed - lots of younger kids, but it was labor day weekend. My wife and daughter took the bed and said it was nice. I took the foldout bed on the sofa - pretty bad matttress in it.. Room A/C was pretty fickle - would seem to get "stuck on", but then when you turned it up, the room got pretty uncomfortable. Overall a good hotel. The rate was a bit high (USD rate), but guess it was due to holiday weekend..

Room Tip: Pool side room was noisy..

Good place to stay if you are visiting UCSD. Rooms are ok, but the bathroom in our room (Preferred Member room) was very small. A bit noisy overlooking the well used pool area during August. I would request a room on the top floor. The hotel was undergoing some room renovations during our stay. Decent beds, as usual at Sheraton.
