We had heard wonderful things about this hotel and therefore booked a villa for the Thanksgiving Holiday (2004). The hotel itself and the location were all we expected. However the service was spotty at best. The "butler" which was part of our package was virtually unavailable except when we were checking out (to pick up his tip?) The hotel staff walked in without waiting for a response to their knock, coffee supplies were not replenished, room service took 1 1/2 hours to correct an error in our order. While the assistant manager called promptly after he became aware of our problems, his promise to address these problems (he indicated that he would "send something") went unfulfilled. Unfortunately this typified our experience with this hotel - long on promises, short on delivery.

We loved our 2 night stay. Our ocean view room on the 9th floor was great. A little small but what it lacks in size is definitely made up for by its character and style. No noise complaints like many other reviews. Pool is nice, overlooks the ocean. Walking distance to many great restaurants and La Jolla Cove. I'll be back.

This was the most expensive hotel we stayed in on our recent trip to the USA- even more than the wonderful Amangani in Jackson. The suite had an unbelievably small bathroom and the service and food were the worst I have experienced. Vastly over - rated as a five star and definitely to be avoided.
