“A Wonderful Experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 23, 2013

Our first time in La Jolla turned into a wonderful experience thanks to the hospitality of La Valencia Hotel. The Concierge personally escorted us to a beautiful room overlooking the pool and ocean.
An unexpected treat was a spectacular sunset each evening right from our veranda.

The rooms were large, up to date and very clean and acomodating. The staff was very responsive to our every need. The bar and restaurant was cozy, warm and very friendly.

We look forward to our return!

No expense was spared or detail overlooked in the renovation of La Valencia Hotel. The guest room was elegantly appointed and the public rooms were beautiful as well. Concierge took care of my every need.
Conveniently located on the bay of La Jolla and service beyond compare!

Dear Little Rock Guest,
Thank you for taking note of our investment in the legacy and future of La V - she is an amazing and gracious hospitality icon and deserving of a respectful and refreshing renaissance. We have completed event space, entry, courtyard, guestrooms, pool desk and fitness room with work nearing completion on the return of Café laRue. More will follow in 2014 and we are eager to show off best of La Jolla at La V.
Cheers,

My wife and I treasure La Valencia. At its best in the late-summer, this is one of our favorite hotels in the word. It's understated glamor is just as it was when movie stars sought refuge there many decades ago. The setting on La Jolla cove is one of the most beautiful in Southern California, and the Pacific Ocean vistas give special meaning to having a room with a view. But it is the people who make La Valencia a truly great hotel. On this trip, the food & beverage staff and the chef went all out to prepare an elegant family reunion dinner for us in the Sky Room, which is no longer serves as a stand-alone restaurant, but is available for special occasions. No worries, the hotel kitchen is still superb, especially for breakfast served overlooking the sea on the terrace. La Valencia and its staff are also the essence of pet friendly. Our big Rhodesian Ridgeback keeps on his best behavior to show how much he appreciates the rock star treatment -- and the valets' treats. Well done again Pink Lady.

Dear Treasure Guest -
It is La V who treasures our loyal guests; thank you for continuing to make memories at our iconic hotel. I am thrilled that you held court in the Skyroom - a remarkable location for private events for just a short time. In early 2014 this space will become exceptional 180 degree ocean view suites and provide yet another reason to experience the La V legend.
See you again soon at your retreat.

I was apprehensive having read reviews and this being an older property--and it does comes with the scents of an aging property right on the ocean, which I expected. However, the staff more than made up for any shortcomings of a property still evolving (we had room with terrace on 11th floor and it was a little outdated but the view was stupendous). I can honestly say every staff member we encountered was courteous, solicitous and helpful--something in short supply in La Jolla overall. The property really is lovely and if you are drawn to historical properties you should enjoy this. Walking distance to most everything which is wonderful and the lunch we had on the terrace was quite good. Despite some shortcomings (room was small, bath was small) we really enjoyed our stay enough to return-mostly because we received wonderful treatment every moment we were there and they genuinely seemed to care that we enjoyed our stay.

Room Tip: Perhaps look into the villas if space is a concern

Dear Wonderful Guest -
Your exceptional comments on our staff make my day; thank you. Ultimately service is the key to any hospitality experience so it is rewarding to know that our goals we exceed with you. The 11th floor is the top of the Tower wing and the highest location at the property. The Tower wing does house our more cozy rooms and bathroom but the views are also the finest at the property. For more space to unwind try grander rooms and suites in the Cabrillo or Sevilla wings or splurge on a Villa!
Thank you again and see you back at La V -

As a native San Diegan, what a treat it was to come home to the La Valencia during a weekend visit to see my dad. "The Pink Lady" is a La Jolla landmark, preserving the tradition of this amazing beach side town while paying close attention to modern comfort, and customer service. Everyone at the La Valencia made me feel most welcome, from check-in staff to the bartender, to housekeeping. My room had French doors which opened onto a small balcony overlooking Prospect Street but was very quiet at night. The staff was so pleasant - everyone said hello and good morning. The pool is incredible, the grounds impeccable, and my stay was memorable. The location couldn't be any better: right in the middle of Prospect Street, within walking distance to everything. What I like most about the Valencia is that they haven't changed anything, but everything seems fresh. So nice to see a legendary hotel honoring its heritage in the middle of what can seem like "new money" businesses in La Jolla creeping in. I would stay here again and again - but next time, I'm booking a longer vacation!

Room Tip: Every room here is great and unique in its own way.

Dear La Jolla Native -
Welcome back to paradise and La V - I am so pleased that our iconic gem was all you expected and more. By the looks of your photos you stayed in one of our studio suites with a village/patio view. I love the extra space and privacy of these rooms and the larger bathrooms. I am especially happy to read your comments about our welcoming staff- we strive to have our guests feel at home in our home.
La V is here for your next longer escape!

I did not stay at the hotel. A friend and I decided to have a leisurely lunch on the deck. (over 3 hours). The waiter and the kitchen were very accommodating in adjusting our choices to suit our palates. Granted the lunch was pricey, but I do not mind "paying the price" if the food is exceptional, the service above average and coupled with great ambiance and spectacular views. The La Valencia checked all the boxes in that respect.

If fantastic food and service is on your list of must haves and cost is no object, this is the place for you.

Dear Happy Diner -
Hats off to you and your guests for joining us at THE MED for lunch - the terrace is an amazing location. I know that executive Chef Daniel Barron and his staff will be thrilled to know that the cuisine was a hit.
In late 2014 we will also debut Café laRue so stay tuned for more great dining at La V.

There is plaster bubbling and peeling on the ceiling and the walls at the lobby of the hotel. There is also this smell associated with old places lingering on the air everywhere. You cannot cover old with coat over coat of paint without major renovation if you claim to be a luxury hotel. There is a side balcony type veranda with great view that we had lunch. The great ocean view was the highlight of it... The crab cakes ($16) were the size of a golf ball flattened (2 crab cakes). I love crab but could not eat this because of the incredibly strong fishy smell... The burger ($16) was a run of the mill meat patty on a dry bun with a handful of fries. My kid's small glass of apple juice ($6) tasted less like apples that the type they serve with happy meals at McDonalds. The whole thing of Hotel and restaurant was a great rip-off. Not a $300 per night hotel. Look elsewhere.

Dear Scottsdale Reviewer -
I am sorry to see your poor perception of La V and have noted that the majority of all your reviews are negative - certainly this is your right and prerogative.
The lobby of La V was renovated and re-opened in early September along with our new entry colonnade. The lobby does not have bubbled paint - our walls are original circa 1926 lath and plaster and intended to be heavily textured; this is traditional to Spanish architecture. La V does not have an old smell, I challenge your comments. We are on the coast of the Pacific and the open air windows of our La Sala Lounge bring in the scents and smells of the ocean which recently have included some pungent aromas on hot days from the nesting seagulls and seals. This is an issue the City is addressing. Our culinary team and service team take great pride in our product and services. We do not shy away from immediate guest comments and concerns as this allows us to ensure that our customers are happy - did you share your concerns with our staff? I know that had you done so we would never have allowed you and your guests to leave without being fully satisfied.
We are sad that your review is not a home run - we will take our licks and press on do provide the best in a coastal boutique luxury experience.
