“What a piece of heaven”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 13, 2012

we visited Kit Carson Lodge as part of a Living Social package and we were not disappointed. Everything was wonderful, the staff were so hospitable, the food was awesome, the accomodations were rustic with charm and very quaint. the knotty pine interior of the cabins and rooms was really warm and inviting. The decor fit the rustic cabin feel and the surrounding scenery. Thunder Mountain was awesome and the smell of the pines was intoxicating. The peace and quiet was just what the dr ordered; no phones, no tv, no internet, no radio. We enjoyed hiking, taking pictures, dining, the lodge fireplace, the art gallery, etc. We will definitley be back again next year.

Room Tip: the cabins and rooms on the lakes edge are the best views. Also, it gets cold at night so bring warm...

If you love camping and cabins you'll love this place. Our room was like a little cabin, rustic, clean and comfortable with a deck and a view of the lake. The lodge and diningroom are rustic with a bit of elegance and the food is great and reasonably priced. You can fish, swim, kayak, boat, hike, explore or just sit and enjoy the scenery. If you feel like a little ride, there are other small lakes just up the road to see and South Lake Tahoe is only about 30 minutes away.
The owners, Mike and Karen, are very hospitable as well as the employees. We had a great time.

A hour's drive from South Lake Tahoe, this gem of a wilderness cabin hotel has everything going for it. Scenery, wildlife, and laidback and simple cottage accomodations scattered throughout the property overlooking the lake. We had lunch after exploring the property and Chef Tom does a tremendous job. We had a wonderful Spanish influenced Chicken and Vegetable soup and a crispy fresh BLT. Wine list is impressive. Worth a day's excursion while in Tahoe and the trip up and back is truly scenic (and paved!). We'd stay a few days there in a minute if they would allow dogs as guests...

We hosted a wedding rehearsal dinner for 32 on the deck of the lodge. The entire dinner went smoothly. The staff was prepared when we arrived, the tables were set appropriately for the occasion and the guests were very pleased to the person attending. My dinner was the stuffed tomato and it was over the top fantastic. The dessert tray was a big hit, especially the creme brulee. We stayed two nights and found the setting quiet, beautiful and well managed. We are early risers so waiting for coffee until 8am had us begging by the time available, but the breakfast included at the lodge is nicely prepared-far superior to many places we have stayed. The accommodations suited our style far more than the Kirkwood condos. We did not mind the limited electric in the rooms, the atmosphere more than made up for that! Strong recommend!

Rustic throw back to a less frenzied time... This lodge is off the grid so there is limited power - no TV or radios in the room. Blow dryers and irons only up at the lodge. No cell phone reception - you may see the last operational public phone booth here! Lodge staff will take messages and post them on the community bulliten board. If you like unspoiled nature in peace and quiet, the KC Lodge is for you. Very few children seen during our visit. The rates are reasonable, and renting small watercraft an absolute bargain. Seasonal staff are friendly college students from around the world.... Breakfast is included, and there is reasonably priced fine dining every day except Monday. Sunday is BBQ night and was very tasty. We were unable to eat at the restaurant because we stayed on a Sunday/Monday. Kirkwood Lodge was a good alternative just five miles up the road. All in all ths was a unique and relaxing get-away that didn't break the bank.

The setting doesn't get any better. Crystal blue alpine lake, granite outcroppings, a resident bald eagle dancing in the sky, and blue skies and piercing stars. We loved our little rustic cabin. No pretentious, which suits this lake perfectly. We stayed for five nights. We rented kayaks one day, went on several day hikes, fished from the shore, and swam in a surprisingly warm lake (for this altitude). The college and foreign exchange students who staff the place work hard, are pleasant and earnest, and eager to learn about California. If you are looking for luxury in the mountains, go to Tahoe. If you truly love the high Sierra for its natural beauty and bounty, this is a great place to stay where you get to enjoy all the outdoors you want with a hot shower of your own. This will be our new new annual vacation spot!

Our family has been coming to Silver Lake for over 40 years, mostly camping, but the last 7 years the older generation has used Kit Carson Lodge. It is a short walk to the adjacent campground so it is very convenient if some are at the lodge and some at the campground. Silver Lake is a wonderful place. It is incredibly beautiful and there are a myriad of recreational opportunities - hiking to numerous other nearby lakes, lake swimming as well as swimming in the potholes in the stream that flows out of Silver Lake and bounces down the granite inclines, kayaking, rock climbing, fishing. This year we had another family reunion and dedicated a memorial bench to my dad who was a forester in El Dorado County. We had the bench dedication at Kit Carson Lodge around the fire ring, attended by about 50 people. The lodge provided coffee before the dedication and a wonderful buffet lunch afterwards. Karen, one of the new managers, was a pleasure to work with and was extremely accomodating in working with us to make this a very special occasion. This is the second summer for the new management at Kit Carson Lodge and they are doing a wonderful job in the upgrades they are doing and the changes they are making. Karen told me they see themselves as stewards of this wonderful place and their goal is to care for it and make it available for people to enjoy - I like that philosophy! By the way, the food in the dining room is incredible - who would have thought you could get such a gourmet meal so far from a big city!

Room Tip: Wolfe cabin and Eastern Brook have wonderful views of the lake. Loch Laven met our needs related to...
