“Peaceful Ski Retreat- great value & location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 3, 2013

Caples lake resort is an excellent value for your money if you are looking to stay near skiing and to spend some quality time with your family or spouse/significant other. However, keep in mind that this is an authentic Tahoe lodge, don't expect any frills.

Highlights:
-Watching the sun rise on the mountains and over the frozen lake from my bed in the lodge
-Getting to Kirkwood in 5 minutes and being the first person in the lift lines 2 days in row!
-Snowshoeing around the frozen lake (Snow shoes provided for free)

I recommend bringing your own breakfast and storing it in the refrigerator provided. They do provide baked goods, juice, and a coffee maker with coffee in the morning for the lodge guests, but I need more fuel for skiing.

This is my number 1 choice near Kirkwood and I will keep coming back.

Room Tip: If you are a couple, get a lodge room, they all have unobstructed views of the lake and Mountains...

Stayed both at the Lodge and Cabin 7. Caples Lake is such beautiful lake with gorgeous views of the mountains and steep granite rock. We can always count on the Ospreys flying over our boat as we troll around the lake for trout. What makes this lake even more special is it's a fisherman's lake -- no tubing, water skiing, or fast motor boats. It's meant for fishing, kayaking, canoeing, swimming, and relaxing. It's the BEST get away with numerous hiking trails for the serious or not so serious hikers. Thank you John Voss for another very memorable vacation. Can't wait until next year!

Room Tip: Cabin 7 is right on the water with a boat ramp out your door.

The best part (in winter) is the quick 4-minute drive to Kirkwood. We stayed in cabin 6 and found it adequate. I guess the cabin is supposed to have a lake view, but it was snowing hard our entire stay so not much to see outside, still it was very scenic, you'll feel that you're in complete solitude.

PROS:
-close to Kirkwood for skiing
-fireplace w/ thermostat was kept the room nice and toasty when needed
-good amount of storage space, kitchen amenities all worked nicely
-John was friendly and helpful - he alerted us to a snowstorm coming the night before so that we could get our car's chains on early.
-cabin was quite cute and nicely decorated (except for maybe the bathroom)
-plenty of parking

CONS:
-beds pretty uncomfortable (our 3rd member slept on it, it was VERY thin!)
-room not fully cleaned when we arrived (trash in a corner, a couple dirty dishes on stove). There is a notice in the room that guests are responsible for cleaning their messes, which is understandable of course, but we shouldn't have had to deal with a past guest's mess.
-fridge was outside the room, very odd! We were told when making the reservation that the fridge in the room was broken, so I thought it was a temporary problem...but in the cabin's in-room directory (seemingly dated from at least 2 years ago), this is stated as well. Why hasn't this been fixed in 2 years?

Super scenic place away from the crowds for fishing, skiing, snoeshowing and no distractions! By myself, with friends - or the family - I'll look forward to visiting Caples Lake Resort for all that it has winter and summer.

The cabins are nice, clean and feel very cozy. They have games there to play in the cabins or you can go to the main lodge to play. There is no Tv, but it is so beautiful and plenty to do that my teenagers not only survived, but loved it there. John is very friendly and helpful, whenever I needed any assistance it felt like I was asking a friend.
