“Dazu Rock Carvings, Chongqing”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 28, 2013

Two hour drive outside of Chongqing, thousand year old Buddhist carvings that told stories about not just Buddhist culture, but reflected general life as well - colors were amazing. And the best part, all tour guides have little mini microphones they speak into and each guest is provided a head set that allows them to listen to the guide, eliminating the screaming guides and their megaphones that you usually find at sights. High ticket price (140rmb), but this is everywhere in China.

“Amazing and intricate”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 13, 2013

These Buddhist sculptures, over 800 years old and carved from the rock onsite contains over 20 niches and 20,000 Buddhist images. This endeavor, commenced by a Buddhist monk in 1179 took 70 years to complete...and some portions at the end show evidence of more planned at the time but not finished. From the female Buddha of 1000 hands ( under restoration but atill partially visible) to the large reclining Buddha, depictions of the heavens and 18 hells, the intricate and some richly colored tableaus are awe inspiring. Listen in for a guide's explanations of the depicted hells, including " knife mountain", " boiling oil, "coal eyes" and " knee chopping" versions! The shaded tropical setting and grottoes, including an interior cavelike room make for an interesting walk. benches provide a resting spot from which to gaze and contemplate just how the monks could tackle this grand and detailled undertaking of wonderful art and religious tribute.

“Really interesting and impressive world heritage site”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 18, 2013

I travelled to Dazu Rock Carvings ( 大足石刻 dàzú shíkè) from my hotel (Jiefangbei area) in Chongqing on a Saturday morning. I organized a driver (through AVIS) for the day for 700RMB (9 hours). The highway to Dazu is a toll highway and costed 40RMB each way. We left at about 9:30am and traffic was quite heavy. It ended up taking more than 3 hours to reach the carvings. I spent about 3 hours looking at carvings and then returned to Chongqing. Traffic on the way back was also very bad and it took about 3 hours to arrive back at my hotel.

The World Heritage Centre web page ( http://whc.unesco.org/en/list/912 ) mentions 5 major rock carving sites at Dazu: Baodingshan, Beishan, Nanshan, Shimenshan and Shizhuanshan. I went to Baodingshan first and then asked my driver to drive to Beishan (about a 10 minute drive). These are the largest of the sites. Unfortunately, I didn't have time to see the other 3 sites.

A ticket which permits entry to Baodingshan and Beishan costs 170RMB during the high-season (March 1 to Nov 31) and 120RMB the rest of the year.

I was very impressed by Baodingshan, it has a lot of larger carvings including a 31-meter long reclining Buddha. The carvings at Beishan were also quite impressive, although smaller in size and generally less well preserved. Still, the intricacy of some of the carvings was really amazing. The style of the carvings at both sites is quite unique and shows a distinct Indian influence. There is also a pagoda at Beishan, but I didn't have time to walk right to it.

I would definitely recommend visiting Dazu rock carvings if you find yourself in Chongqing for a few days. It's a little bit of a hassle to get there, but definitely worth the visit.

“Truly impressive”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 4, 2013

This is not the easiest place get to on your own but it is well worth the effort. If you are coming from Tongliang you should get the bus from the south bus station, or from Chongqing any bus station will do. On arrival at Dazu you then need to get across town to where the shuttle bus will take you to the attraction. A pedal taxi costs 10rmb so it's not too expensive and the shuttle bus costs only 3. A regular taxi will try and charge you anything from 50 to 100 so it's best to avoid the rip off merchants. On arrival the attraction entry ticket is a hefty 135rmb but it is well worth the price. You walk through the commercial zone and into the beautiful valley of the carvings. The rock faces are covered in Buddhist carvings, created over 900 years ago and mostly well preserved and protected from the elements. The path takes you past them all, the Buddha of 1000 hands is currently being restored but that should not detract from the beauty of this place.
After the carvings there is a large temple to explore, pagodas and gardens. A lot to see and afterwards plenty of shops to relieve you of your cash. if you do want to buy I suggest you bargain hard before settling on a price.
